Met Billy Smith at Graceland yesterday. First time he had been back to Graceland in 38 years. Told me stories of how he would lay in bed, next to Elvis, when the drugs got bad, and just watched him through the night to make sure he was OK. Elvis Week at Graceland is an incredible event, you never knew who will show up. Saw Ben Cauley and one of the pilots who flew Elvis around this year. Great times, good memories.......

You listen to these men and watch their expressions, they loved Elvis, they didn't lose a paycheque and a boss, they loss their brother, father, and best friend all at the same time. To be be able to sit and spend time with Elvis' inner circle would only be described by one word, priceless.

Billy, Marty, Lamar, Sonny, Red and the rest of the Memphis Mafia not in this video... I do not blame you. There is no doubt in my mind you all loved him and he loved you in return. There were good times, bad times, times Elvis probably pissed you off and vice versa. I am glad you were there with him. You were all so blessed to have known, loved and lived history with Elvis. He was indeed a legend and you were the witnesses to his life and became famous yourselves by association. What a ride it must've been - once in a lifetime! Thanks for taking care and loving him as long as you did. Be well guys.

The chances of him being saved were very slim. This is because there were very few people with the power and authority to make him do something he was resistant to. Only his father or Colonel Parker had the clout to make him take a big, long break and address his problem. Everyone else had to watch their step or they would quickly find themselves on the outer. And that goes for all the well-meaning fans who think they could have done any better.

U had to be there to understand on how shit worked with E. Thses guys saw all the shades of E from, happy to very dark. We can all assume who might've played th bad guy because we as fans are still angry n frustrate even after alllllllllllllll these yrs of E being gone but, again we cannot comprehend the magnitude of such a era of a time where not only was there a man who was bigger than life and just entrenched the music n feeling to the world.E gripped the world because he was real,he was original,he was FKN ELIVS PRESLEY GODDAMIT!. I remeber seeing his funeral on my folks black n white on a cold n dreary afternoon coming ome from school. That shit still haunts me to this day. We should all be fortunate to either see this amazing unique being or just plain able to comprend to what this man accomplished in suxh a short time on this planet. LONG LIVE E!

@cartyajc It's titled Elvis Aaron Presley By Alanna Nash. It had been out of print in the around early to mid 2000's and even used copies on Amazon were up to $135. I lost my copy I bought in'97 so I had to keep cheecking it out from the library (contempled "losing" theirs, but whatever). Apparently it went into reprint after Katrina. It looks like It may be in a paperback edition under a different title -- not sure. Hope that helps, because it's my Elvis-bible....

Col. Parker should never have worked a man so hard like he did. He was greedy to fulfill his gambling addiction. These guys were in a hard spot. You either tell the truth to Elvis and get fired or you go along with it and watch him burn out and die. Not even the young musicians today could keep a schedule like Elvis did. It literally takes drugs to do that. The human body just can't take that kind of stress. These guys all loved Elvis till the end. RIP guys.

Elvis had an advanced copy of the book, supposely Frank Sinatra called and offered to have the book killed. E declined. Red taped a phone convo, which can be heard on youtube and E said do what you need to do. Reading the book today it's not that bad, but E had a milk and cookies image and it did damage that.

To be clear, they believed they were entitled to more than a week's pay after being terminated -- so they were pissed off at E. Sonny said: It was out of anger and resentment when we wrote it." That said, the book was the only public attempt to shame Elvis into getting off the meds. At least they tried.

These folk did not have the excuse of being "sick"..like Elvis was. Don't ever say: "he was not any good!" W. B. K., did you know the man? Ever meet him? I believe d they loved Elvis. Know Elvis most of their lives. But they were torn between being a friend and an employee. I saw this video, it’s very good. Some harsh reality here. But in know way dimmish es my feelings for Elvis. He was human. Which means at times he was selfish spoiled, arrogant, some marriages broke up because of the boys 24/7 on call duties. Which I don’t think was always necessary. Marriage break ups were not all Elvis, s fault, but that lifestyle didn’t help. The good side is the best of Elvis. We all have a hidden dark side somewhere. I don’t think Elvis ever really wanted family, I mean husband , wife responsibilities. I think he always wanted to be free. But he married, he kept his word to Priscilla s parents. I believe Elvis loved Priscilla. But she practically grew up with him. So I can see at times when he took her for granted. That’s not an easy life for spouses. Despite the fringe benefits.

Who knows where the truth is.. These guys, I believe really cared about Elvis. I'm not sure, but I think with their story and others now, we get a clearer picture. Sadly, prescription meds were given out like candy. The Carpenters spent years on Quaaludes. Uppers, downers, good bad or ugly. It was part of the culture. Anyone that would have tried to go up against him would have immediately been gone.. I wish he would have turned back to God.
