After watching many videos of Elvis, Visiting Graceland 3 times, reading the books these men wrote about him, and watching the Movie Elvis that just came out with Austin Butler, I realized that the world and fans like me can't get enough of Elvis. I mean I am always reading or looking for something to know more about Elvis. The world was cheated out of Elvis when he died so young, he lived such a fast life and it ended so quickly. When I think of what Elvis was dealing with all the years, I felt he was confused all the time, it's impossible to make sense of anything when everywhere you went, he was the focus of everybody. I always thought how great it would be to talk to Elvis alone where no one is watching, just talking to this great entertainer and person. I miss Elvis more than normal people. Long live the King"

It is very interesting. And why he seemed so self destructive. Have went through periods of everything Elvis, went to Graceland once, would like to go again and to Tupelo. The world will never have another Elvis and I believe that is why he endures with more and more fans. We don’t want to let go of someone that was so unique and had a God given voice, because he certainly did.

Elvis was a phenomenon. His voice was magic; it was rich, full, melodic and rhythmic. So incredibly sexy. And--bonus, his looks facial, and physical, how he moved. He was incredibly sexy. Even to his death. He was ill, older, suffering from fluid retention. He was still extremely sexy. No one around him understood his health problems. And from what I understand, even his actual thinking. He kept his personal philosophy to himself.

Elvis seemed to have the biggest heart, but complex as a person. He surrounded himself with people he liked and enjoyed, but they couldn't tell him "no". I think he took these guys as friends to show they could be cool too. They were young, it was a boys club, but he enjoyed life the way he wanted. Sometimes you need people in your life that say "stop".

Elvis had choices like any one else. Yes, grew up poor wrong choices of friends and not checking out your manager, letting him make all decisions, when he could have refuse too take rest. You could still be a giver and love money. He had a first home , why did he buy Graceland, expensive cars so, on. If he did not like money he would kept simple life. Was he that stupid not to see, what Parker was doing? Was he that Stupid being pushed in a marriage, precilla was a young kid, of 14 wanted 7 or 8 years to get married, there is something wrong with this picture. Than his mom comes not happy start drugs and drinking, he acts like kid. Why was she depressed? If she wanted to live a poor life she had a choice. It seems like real life got mix with fake world it wasn’t real world for him. When you play different character I believe your mind gets mixed up. Sometimes that would t drive person mad. These hollywood people are not themselves. There some that cannot play the character stay who they are.

Instead of the Memphis maffia these 4-5 crooks should have been called the Memphis leeches, who just took advantage of a good guy like Elvis. So disgusting to listen to their stories of how they would get the girls that would come to see Elvis, those were girls I'm sure these loosers could never had, Had their been on their own, they kept Pricilla away from her husband and contributed greatly to the divorce, I'm sure they had years of toasting to the divorce after Elvis divorced. Very selfish people, always thinking of what they could get from him.... they never understood the depth of the man, Elvis knew he was serching for something spiritual, too bad he ended up with a bunch of blood suckers who isolated him from the people who really loved him. This is indeed a hard watch.

I know how you feel ( I grew up very similar, and nobody told me to "stop smoking pot") Honestly, this is a very difficult time for Elvis's friends. I think they really respected Elvis alot. At this present time the Pricilla is very upset that her only daughter passed away. No hard feelings, the whole crew, and Pricilla are dealing with a death in the Presely family right now.

Elvis was the conduit for white people to fully embrace black music. He was not afraid! He took a lot of criticism for it but he had the backbone to stand for what he believed. The other thing Elvis could do was deliver the music the right way. Pat Boone couldn't do it. Andy Williams couldn't do it. No white singer could do what Elvis did but ELVIS. He had the name, the voice, the style, the confidence and the look! So even when the haters arrived, it didn't matter. Girls were passing out!

@@diningroomfish5470 furthermore EP being a father didn't help change his lifestyle for the better. Joe mentioning the later years of Elvis' life they tried to forget/deny he had a serious drug addiction is scandalous. The "Memphis Mafia" were his closest friends even at the time anyone could of said something like "We love man" or "We care about you Elvis, Please your going to kill yourself." I mean the Memphis Mafia sounds even by today standards really ridiculous, constant parties like their teenages on spring break or a late night escort party instead by the time EP died most were late 30s early 40s I mean come on most people have settled and mellowed by their late 30s especially.

You are not entirely right. The reason why Elvis could not tour outside of the United States is because of his guns and pills, none of which he could carry in those quantities he had across borders. Nothing to do with the Colonel. In fact, the Colonel had contacts with some of the most politically influential people in the country and could easily make himself legal, but he was not bothered about it either.

That is a silly excuse, if the colonel was illegal and he was linked to the biggest star in the world, the US government would of known about it. If elvis thought that was a problem, he would just rang Nixon. "So hey Mr President my manager needs US citizenship, can you help out. Sure buddy". Job done. Nope Parker was tied to the mob and the mob controlled Parker, who controlled Elvis. Parker and the mob had something big on EP and it kept him the in the US forever.

I don't think Elvis' boys liked Larry Geller very much. He was a relative "newcomer" to the group, and I think they felt, along with Tom Parker, thought he may have exerted too much influence on him. But I think they were simply jealous. Geller was an intensely spiritual man (as opposed to "religious" which Elvis didn't particularly care for), and he taught him many things, largely through sharing his collection of spiritually-motivated books with him, like "The Prophet," which remained Elvis' favorite until the day he died. RIP, Elvis Aron Presley.

What Jerry said at 51:18-51:59 is so true. Sums Elvis Presley up so well. Elvis gave a hell of a lot more than he ever got back. He was surrounded by leeches and yes men. It's a shame he wasn't able to see this until it was too late. Larry says Elvis knew he was in trouble by 1977 and acknowledged he needed to make changes in his personal and professional lives. The tragedy was that Elvis delayed the changes until September 1977 and as we know, Elvis died the month before. Such a shame. As dramatic as it seems, from Larry's words, it seems Elvis had finally woken up in 1977 and was getting ready to make changes and fire more leeches. Shame. RIP, Elvis. Elvis knew he had to sort himself out and he was going to make changes in his personal and professional lives and he was going to release some of the others from his life. @@gracieg7601 of course you can't fix an addict. They have to want to change and unless they do, there's nothing you can do for them, except be there for them. Everyone may have tried to help Elvis, but it won't have worked. Back in the Seventies, there wasn't any real knowledge on the dangers of substance abuse and depression, so that stigma further hurt Elvis. Elvis did try to get clean many times, but would always relapse. On his last vacation in the Spring of 1977, Elvis got off the drugs and started exercising more and didn't look anywhere near as big as the magazines wrote. In fact, despite looking pale and worn out in some photos, he looks the usual shape for a 40-something-year-old dude. However, once Elvis got sand in his eye, he had to go home to rest before his new tour and relapsed. Shame. Elvis seemed to get clean intermittently, but he couldn't maintain it. If it wasn't for his touring schedule, he probably could have gotten clean for longer. Two shows a night - sometimes three - is enough to tire anyone out, not just a 30-something-year-old and 40-something-year-old performer.

Sometimes I am actually left thinking; "can they really hear themselves when they say that!?" I don't feel they shed a very nice light on themselves really. Like someone below mentions, from what it appears Elvis was their 'cash cow' and they were reaping the benefits of what came with being with Elvis, only in it for the laughs and the ass. As soon as someone tried to rain on their little parade they would get touchy and territorial.... I mean with Pricilla for instance, the way they describe her like she is some massive threat for "trying to change Elvis" or "trying to separate them from Elvis"... to be fair to the woman, I don't think I'd have been happy in her shoes either with 11 men sharing my home and my marriage every single day, knowing that wherever I go I have an entourage instead of a romantic meal for two and having to live with the fact that the same men were egging Elvis on a lot of the time to have these crazy parties, drugs and other women because it's what they wanted to do too. Or Larry who wanted to chat about philosophical and religious beliefs with Elvis instead of partying - they decided they all didn't like that because they all just wanted to "have a good time" with Elvis's influence and Elvis's money! As if he was a bad influence for trying to put Elvis on a righteous path. Selfish and power hungered the lot of them as far as I can concur from this, they seem to talk so fondly of him now because they say they all loved him though maybe it was more that they loved what Elvis could do for them and aren't able to have the things they had when he was alive now, where it seems they were using him to get in places, get drugs and get laid most of the time!

Charlie Hodge told the story how Sonny West, Red West and Dave Hebler vindictively sent Elvis the transcript to the scandalous book “Elvis: What Happened?” they wrote along with a printed order for two hundred thousand pre orders from K Mart for the book just to add salt to the wound. Charlie said he walked in Elvis’ room and found him weeping with the transcript as he looked up at Charlie and said “what is my daughter going to think of me now?” Elvis died days later. I’m sure Judas could have told some great and heartfelt stories about hanging out with Jesus also.

Women don’t especially think that they are going to change them it’s thst a woman expects the man she marries to prefer her over other things in his life. She should be the one he wants to be with over anyone else. That’s what a woman expects. His buddies are fun but a man should prefer her over his buds. That’s all. They say she tried to change him? NO! I think a man should be as committed to her if he’s chased her to win her over then don’t just shelf her once he marries. That’s not fair. If he didn’t want to get married he shouldn’t have. But I do know Elvis did love Priscilla. He just wasn’t sure how to be married. He probably expected a wide to be like mom always there when he comes home. My husband and I were well matched cause I worked avd he worked. When we came together at the end of the day we were there. My husband was a drag racer. And I loved drag racing too. So whatever we had to do to achieve what we both loved then we did that. I know lots of women like that in drag racing. A drag racer can’t be married to a woman if she doesn’t love it too. You have to have things in common. And we did. Priscilla would have better off with Elvis if she had a life too to come back together at the end of the day. But being married to a performer of Elvis caliber is hard I’m sure no matter what. He didn’t want her going off to live and come back together at the end of the day. She was so young they didn’t know how to be together. So be it. He didn’t always confide in her his thoughts and Needs. It’s sad.

Elvis should have dumped the Col. when he made the comeback special in 68' and took hold of his career and hired new management. He proved to himself and the industry he was still a musical force to reckoned with with that special. The manor in which he dropped the movies should have shown him that ultimately he was in charge. He never seemed to grasp the idea that it was his career and his choices from there on in. Instead he'd lapsed into that worker /boss relationship with the Col. letting the Col. dictate the career to him. It may have been the perfect recipe during his rise, but by 68' the Col. himself was an out of touch and over his head as far as how to properly manage that level of famous artist. To the end of his days the Col. never evolved beyond being a self serving, tent show con man. It's hard to fault the col. for being what he always was...a low class, hick grifter plying his trade like he was still in the circus sideshow. I think the outcome may have been much different if Elvis had engaged a management team that was more in touch with the best interests of the artist and at a lower percentage! At the end of the day it still comes back to Elvis himself as adult. He allowed it all to happen. Whether he complained or not,he allowed his career to be dictated to him. He even had another chance for an epiphany after the monumental worldwide "Aloha" broadcast. Once again he demonstrated that he was still a worldwide drawing card. He could have quite easily shifted to doing single night stadium and big venue performances like young rock artists were at the time and commanding huge bucks. Instead he relegated himself to gruelling Vegas schedules and touring small markets endlessly like a travelling freak show with his dismal end almost becoming a foregone conclusion!

Red,sonny,Lamar, and Marty cared for and loved Elvis... no doubt in my mind. People get mad at them saying things like why did they let Elvis keep taking all those pills?Listen how do you protect someone who had the means to get what he wanted when he wanted it?Red busted up a guy one time for bringing Elvis pills,Elvis told Red that he needed them(pills). That’s why Red,Sonny, and I believe it was Dave that was fired in 76... Elvis told Billy Smith that he didn’t like people telling him what to do and trying to control him. If Red,Sonny,Marty,Lamar, and Billy weren’t around as long as they were,Elvis would have died sooner than 42. They wrote the book because they were hurt and because they wanted to challenge Elvis.. Maybe Elvis would read it and see what he had become and change.

The most devastating blow to him was that book. Sonny and Red didn’t read the book before it was set to be put out. Sonny said if they had just read the book before it was published they would have corrected it. But they were young and didn’t know any better. And they were mad mostly at Vernon. If Vernon has done what Elvis told him to do it may not have happened. But it was a series of errors that caused the whole thing. The drugs Elvis took clouded his judgement. The food he ate was because the drugs made him not be able to taste like he would have. I’m not trying to make excuses for him eating the way he did, but he didn’t taste things like you or I. He combed his hair allot because it was a nervous habit.

The thing we should keep in mind is that all these guys that were close to Elvis all played an important part in keeping things together in Elvis' professional and personal life. These guys did have skills that filled in gaps for Elvis. These guys did career promotion, communications, hair dressing, book keeping, buying, stage lighting, security, etc. for Elvis. All these guys were very loyal to Elvis and his career, and they all professed there love for Elvis as being their close personal friend. THEY WERE NOT JUST LEECHES AND HANGERS ON! They all played a very important role in Elvis' life....

My clients don’t buy me houses and party with me. This was dysfunctional.

@@Galworld761 Well.... It was a form of function given the particular situation. But I do think that your comment about this situation being "dysfunctional" is a fair assessment. But remember: Elvis did not drink alcohol much and he did not want his family, friends, and employees drinking around him. And Elvis saw and experienced the Memphis Mafia's dedication and commitment to his cause, so he did reward them with houses. The Memphis Mafia did earn every gift that was given to them in my opinion. There money pay was substantial, but it was not all that much given what they had to do for it.

Elvis didn't have any friends. I've never seen pictures or videos of him and his father horsing around or showing any affection. He was alone. These guys just milked Elvis for all that he had and Elvis died alone on his bathroom floor. I wonder in his last moment, who did he call out to. He died on that floor and not at the hospital. Loneliness, despair, heartache, emptiness. I hope he's happy. Rest in Peace, Elvis. I wish I could have been there for you.

I don't know what Elvis guys said to him about his drug intake, but if one them had the nerve to tell Elvis that his mother was looking down at him to stop the drugs he may have stopped what he was doing to himself, at least planned a seed in his mind.
