I agree. I have never seen such a ridiculous spectacle. Those poor sheep are completely stressed out and that blessed dog encouraged to chase them. He is lucky he wasn't trampled. I come from a sheep farming family and I found it totally sickening. It was like a whole load of townies had just been let out of kensington for the first time to go hunting.

​@@kindlydude Taking care to not stress out the sheep (or any animal) is not having "high standards". It's basic animal husbandry. I'd guarantee there are videos on KZbin if people herding sheep or discussing herding sheep that could be watched for the educational value. The idea of occasionally giving the sheep feed in the little barn area and/or teaching the sheep to be led by someone carrying and then distributing feed to then is a very old, common practice. Also, it seems obvious to anyone that grew up on a farm that you don't let an untrained dog in with an uneasy group of sheep. And keep any motioning and shouting to a minimum...

For those that are saying that Stephanie should have borrowed Dan’s Border Collies - Yes, they have a herding instinct, but they’re not born with the knowledge to herd them into an enclosure for shearing! These remarkable dogs are TRAINED to follow sheep herding commands, and Dan’s dogs are not.

Untrained dogs ate incredibly dangerous and stressful to sheep When I used to live in Wales in the 80s, all loose dogs were shot on sight by the farmers because even a well meaning dog just having fun can quickly run sheep to death, even a dog the size of Lancelot. My own dogs mum, grandma and 2 sisters were all shot by farmers for being unrestrained, even though they were only suspected of sheep worrying and werent even caught in the act. The dog owners ( a friend of mine and his mum) tried to protest, but the magistrates and all that are all farmers themselves. Lesson. Dont let your dog off the lead in Wales

That’s how we moved our sheep too, just get them used to coming into the shed for feed once in a while and they will just follow you. Less stressful for everyone:)

The last two years were much better than this. It seems like chaos for no reason at all. Two years ago, Dan used his drone to herd them, and last year they were guiding them within a much smaller space. Frankly, I don't see why they don't just start bringing temporary fencing around the sheep (effectively herding them by bringing the enclosure around them) instead of run the sheep around like this.

There were about 3 people (who shall remain anonymous) who really made the sheep herding successful. The rest seemed to be a bit of clown convention. Thankfully, it’s a small herd….I had flashbacks to my childhood growing up on a cattle ranch and having to help herd hundreds of cattle on horseback - my very loud and impatient father loudly barking orders….and woe be the one who let a calf slip through!!

What are you all doing? The sheep will not go in a direction where there are people standing, especially with the small dog and a camera man there. What a pantomime. Two people is all you need and walking them quietly along the fence gently tapping the stick on the ground round through the gate. Needed to leave them to settle down first then walk them through Without anyone standing in the gate area! Their poor hearts would have been pounding from being so frightened.

Yes, all that running around was unnecessary. Calm and quiet with sheep is the answer. They should train them with a bucket of sheep pellets to walk into a small pen. They will learn very quickly to follow the bucket when they get a treat at the end. Would save so much time and stress and then they have the sheep quietly corralled from where they can shear them. Also, the grass in that field is far too long, it needs topping. Sheep prefer shorter grass and also very long grasses can get caught between their cloven hooves and cut the skin there.

Having a small pen in the field they can be directed to seems better than trying to get them into that shed. One person to control the gate.

If you feed the sheep ever day a cup of sheep nuts but shake them in a bucket loudly before you feed them. they will learn to follow the sound of a rattling bucket. Which makes moving sheep so much easier.

They are used to not having human interaction because they are pets not a commercial herd and trying to feed them for a few weeks would make them more reliant on being fed as opposed to feeding themselves

A number of people suggesting that Stephanie should have a one of Dan's puppys for sheep herding next year. Wonder who they think is going to be the main care giver/handler and both human and dog need significant training together. A good shepherd and their sheepdog are very much as one entity.

lol! The sheep herding was utter chaos, even more so than usual! If it wasn't for Dave, you'd have been chasing sheep in the woods. He's a god send. On the other hand, the adorable Lancelot is unfortunately not a herding dog, unless it was herding the sheep away from where they were supposed to go. However, Lancelot is very good at rescuing lost wee pchicks. Congratulations to all who succeeded in catching a sheep.
