Welcome to the World Athletics Watch Party, join the conversation on Twitter with our hashtag #WatchWorldAthletics.
A little over a month after Hurricane Dorian wreaked devastation in his homeland of The Bahamas, Steven Gardiner lifted the spirits of his compatriots to climb sixth on the 400m all-time list with a rip-roaring victory.
The Bahamian, whose last one-lap defeat when completing a 400m race came when winning world silver at the 2017 World Championships, bided his time before unleashing a devastating burst of speed over the last 150 metres to blow away his rivals and set a national record 43.48.
Behind, Pan American champion Anthony Jose Zambrano lowered his personal best of 44.55 set in the heats to record a South American record of 44.15 for silver.
Fred Kerley, who recorded a time of 43.64 to win the US title in July, had to settle for bronze in 44.17.

Many moons ago, the "Golden Girls" won gold in the women 4x100m and put 242 the Bahamas on the map, since then, the Bahamas have medal in many individual and relay events...Tonique Williams-Darling and Miller-Uibo Olympic women 400m, the men high jump, Olympic gold in the men's 4x400m, Derrick Atkins medals in the World Championships 100m, even I won silver in the 100m at the CAC games and now, my countryman Steve Gardner is continuing to keep the Bahamas on the track and field international map. And for all those Bahamian athletes that did not had a chance to win an international medal but still contributed to the sport to what it is today, thank you and 242 STRONG!!!

Pardon the ignorance, but where was Norman? Injury? Choked in the semis?
@PrimeDavidian
@PrimeDavidian 3 жыл бұрын
Norma pulled out in his first heat at the 300m mark because he said he could feel an injury coming and didn't want to aggravate it with the Olympics so close. Little did he know it would be pushed back a year 😭

400m is pretty much the only distance where you see people collapsse from exhaustion after the finish. Marathon, 10k, 5k etc they just keep on running like "oh, it's over already, no big deal, I'm good, I still have plenty of energy" lol...

@@talkaborit3320 that’s not how it works. Is is this the common wealth final? No. It’s the world championship final. South Africa is in the common wealth. And the world record holder is south Afrivan, so he would have the Area record common wealth African etc
