Many athletes (or their coaches) are attempting heavier weights than usual right now because of olympic qualification. To qualify you need to lift a top 10 total within your weight class. So athletes are encouraged to prioritize getting a huge total once over several competitions, whereas usually the optimal strategy is to try and lift just a bit heavier than your competition. So the below average success rates right now are just a reflection of above average weights attempted.

@@TheSnahsnah Ok, let's assume your premise is correct: since weightlifters are less averse to risk due to the Olympics, there is a higher occurrence of invalid lifts. Do you see the problem? The mean is sensible to those occurrences, which poses a statistical conundrum. It is highly improbable (≈ impossible) that the success rate should be below average consistently because there is a statistical tendency to the regression to the mean. Imagine that I eat ice-cream everyday, unless it rains. Not eating ice-cream in the summer is below average because it doesn't rain regularly. What happens in the winter then? If it rains more, then I won't eat ice-cream on a regular basis so the average changes. That's my point .
