As an Italian, I thought Tamberi would do the same "show" he did at the European Champioships, where he was almost eliminated at 2.29 and then he did 2.34 and 2.37 at the first attempt, with the second and third ranked jumpers (the Ukranians) did 2.29 and 2.26... apparently he wasn't joking and his health issues were serious... but also I enjoyed Stefano Sottile's performance. He looked happy, despite the 4th place, so I guess he was ok with it, but he could have won an unexpected medal. I hope to see him next time, he's such a nice and humble guy (the opposite of Tamberi)

I remember being decent at this at Under 16 level Irish championships. I wasn't even 6ft but jumping 1,85cm getting me in 5th. The other guys and even the girls were all well over 6ft'2. A year later I had grown to 6ft'3 lol but grew too fast and my coordination was messed up. Only managed when 2:12 in 800, when I was 8 I ran the 800 in 2:42. Never got coached like American talents do. I won under 16 shot put nationals on my first try, bronze in javelin. I wanted to do it all. I had the talent and will. But sadly no coaching, and a growth sprite at the wrong time. Or too much My actual disciplines were 200, 400 and 800, sometimes triple aswell.

All the US fans must thank Jennifer Velente for winning the gold medal in track cycling to kept USA's hopes alive to top the medal tally. And if she could have failed to win the gold on that day, then USA's women's basketball team gold was of no use. USA would have finished 2nd in the medal tally. And then all the blame would have come on Shelby McEwen, because he didn't shared the gold. So I personally believe that all the fans of team USA 🇺🇸 must thank Jennifer Velente for winning the gold medal in track cycling and keeping USA's hopes alive to top the medal tally.

I'll never understand why they didn't just call it a tie. After the last games, I thought for sure the rules would have been changed because leaving any part of the results up to a non-performance choice or chance like it's a board game isn't sportsmanship at all. It forces the result to depend on the emotional state of the athletes rather than their ability. Knowing they had both gone as far as they could go within the rules and tne extent of the regulation competition, they should have both gladly accepted a tie and shared result instead of forcing an artificial loss for personal gain. The IAAF should just say this is now the rule to settle ties, like it's overtime in team sports, instead of having this situation repeat. It's not in the spirit of the games or sportsmanship at all to leave this alone, it ended up making these guys look bad to the world even though they were the top 2 finishers.

I am completely lost as to why there was a jump off. Hamish Kerr was the clear winner (before the jump off) as he had the lower miss (at 2.31M) vs McEwen's miss (2.34M). That should have ended it there. I was a high jumper in high school and college and that is how ties are decided at every level. There should only be a jump off is the two athletes had identical misses at identical heights. Glad Kerr won it in the end as he should have won without a jump off.

McEwen didn't want to share the gold medal as he was too proud and wanted it all by himself. Typical American arrogance of not wanting to lose to a "small" nation like New Zealand. Karma. Hamish Kerr would have willingly shared and prevented a jump off. In Tokyo, Barshan graciously shared the gold with Tamberi and it proved to be one of the most memorable moment in the Olympics history.
@ChloeBail-jn9ie5 ай бұрын

What you are saying is just complete nonsense. It's way more common among athletes not wanting to share the gold than share it. Tamberi and Barshim were friends and also they both had won a lot (almost everything) so that was just a smart move to put a cherry on top of both carreers.
