'Men Throw Darts BETTER Than Women!' | Sports Psychologist Reacts To Trans Darts Player Win

A trans darts player has won the women-only contest just days after claiming a title while playing against men.
Noa-Lynn van Leuven, 27, triumphed on Saturday in the PDC Women’s Series, eight days after beating male rivals in a mixed event, where she won the £2,500 pot.
It has led to a furious backlash by those in the sport, with two of her female Dutch compatriots (world number two Aileen de Graaf and world number 12 Anca Zijlstra) quitting the national team in protest against van Leuven.
In an exclusive interview with TalkTV, former professional darts player and professor of sports psychology Dr Linda Duffy discusses her doctoral thesis that looked into why males were traditionally better than females.
Her study found that 'gender was the biggest predictor of darts performance' and that 'males outperform females at all levels' across the sport.

I have no problem in admitting that I as a woman will never be as athletically capable as even a mediocre male athlete. Women's bodies evolved to be able to accomodate pregnancies with babies with problematic head sizes. That alone puts us at a speed disadvantage (looser tendons ligaments, more awkward leg angle). And then our psychology is wired to care for incredibly helpless, immature offspring.

Competitors need to stand up and speak out in numbers. This needs to end NOW! It should never have been allowed to get this far. We (the vast majority) are behind you and will support you. Do the right thing for the sportswomen of today and tomorrow and refuse to accommodate men in your sport.

Yeah the only objective reasoning she gave was technique and how it affects the quality of the throw. Everything else she said was subjective factors that she related back to her thesis statement but never actually elaborated on due to the lack of information.

I love all of this message except for the one argument where she says that some communities don't allow women to compete with men so we have to be mindful of that. No we don't - those societies can join us in the 21st century whenever they're ready. In a recent example that I greatly admire, the women's world champion chess player chose not to travel to Saudi Arabia for the world championships. Good for her!

There's rarely ever a need for an "open" sports category. In most sports, the "open" category is the category that men typically compete in, but they are not closed to women or transgender persons. The US Open golf tournament is open to any gender, but the US Womens Open golf tournament is open only to women.

My mindset would be anger at playing a dude in a women's league. That would effect my focus, I would be more likely to lose. Men being more alpha have a psychological edge as well

I feel men do have a slight physical advantage. Only in that the average height of a male is several inches more than a female. So they have to throw that much harder to keep the darts high. Especially double top. I’ve played against several ladies teams and their darts travel in such an arc they drop low. I’m surprised more of them don’t play on the 19s.

@TheGreatest585 I'm the only full-time professional darts coach on earth. The technique is different due to size and coordination. If you look at a female that has a throw like a man as she puts it, Beau is over 6 feet tall with wide shoulders. The technique is different due to biology.

Again, the only objective thing she said was form and technique. And the point is not to throw like a man, it’s to hit the bullseye. That’s why her points beyond the form and technique never landed. Even when you shoot a basketball in a hoop, the point is not to shoot like a man, the point is to use proper form and technique in order for the ball to make it into the basket. But if the size difference makes a difference then it’s not the probability of gender because it’s not a contact sport. It would make more sense for everyone to compete against people who are similar size and weight. That would then bring up the argument of, is it fair for smaller individuals to compete against larger individuals even if they are the same gender? Would that also be considered unfair? And if that’s the case then I would assume that there are a lot of people who lost and will continue to loose due to unfair competition on both ends.

I'm transgender and when I first heard that female dart athletes stepped down because of a transgender female I thought it was bigotry. But really, science is science. I couldn't imagine why a male would be better at throwing a dart than a female, but here we are: it's been proven. Sports should be fair and ofcourse I feel every human should be allowed to compete. But what are the categories gonna be in the future? I don't know. They managed to do this for the paralympics, which I would have thought to be practically impossible. So I guess we'll see! Science.

I remember Linda Batten very well and she was a good player. Much better than Maureen Flowers and Loveday King. She threw differently due to a diverse mindset although she didn't know her thinking was contrary! How could she possibly know. It happens with all the top exponents in all walks of life, but especially in any sporting activity. It's due entirely on a lie gradually infused into our minds over the decades and centuries.
