We had a beat-up Holden Superbone from the 80’s in our high school band’s instrument closet. We used it as a bass trombone replacement but we also had a piece that called for one, it was a trombone feature called “Spring can Really Hang You Up The Most” from the album “The Ashley Alexander Band plays Frank Mantooth”. Overall it was an odd horn but surprisingly ergonomic.

The Valves do give it that Juan Tizol Vibe but you can use the Main Slide to correct the intonation which is something that not alot of musicians thought about.

@theinstrumentman74292 жыл бұрын
@Mihail Milev ya I do now but I hadn't for a couple of years. I just recently got asked to play bari sax for jazz band so I had to get back to playing it. It wasn't that hard to pick it back up since I spent so much time playing back in the day and was still playing music. If you just take some time to practice on each, it's not very difficult. I've found that brass and woodwinds use different facial muscles so usually what I'll do is switch whether my lips get tired. That way I'm "resting" but still practicing

@theinstrumentman7429 Жыл бұрын
It's just been sitting in storage for the last few years. There's no reason to play it and it's not a good instrument. Definitely don't buy it, or any superbone for that matter, if you plan to play it in any sort of serious context.

@@Arthur-hg7ny If you're REALLY wanting a superbone, get the one made by Wessex. I've played both quite a bit, and the Wessex sounds far better for a fraction of the price. The Holton is way more comfortable to hold, but sounds really stuffy no matter what. Superbones in general are a very gimmicky instrument, the valves are going to be stuffy no matter what even compared to a regular valve trombone. I really like them though because I'm left handed, and besides French Horn, they're the only left handed valved instrument. As much as I like them, I can't justify the price for how bad they sound compared to every single other trombone I've played. They sound like a straight small bore tenor trombone if it somehow had an even smaller bore.
