Years ago I drove a 1978 Honda Accord. Great car. It had a minor fault in that the door latches had a little rubber piece that would wear out and one couldn't fully close the doors. To fix it required that the whole latch be replaced. When I went in to get a latch the second time the man at the parts counter asked what I needed a new latch for. I explained to him my problem and he told me I didn't need the whole latch anymore as Honda, recognizing the problem, had made replacement rubber pieces available. Cost less than $2 dollars rather than the $20 plus for the whole latch. Apple should be forced to do the same.

When trying to set up FaceID with a replaced component, you get that message "Try again later." I always found it funny, that they wouldn't say "It will never work again with that part." It turns out they were not lying. For your iPhone XS to get FaceID back, you just had to wait 5-6 years. Thank you for taking the time to film the process.

Some people have had success calibrating Face ID, screens and batteries, iOS 18 RC is buggy and / or the servers are overloaded. Many people are saying after forcing many restarts they got the parts to pair. Making conclusions this early is premature; now when 18.1 18.2 18.3 are released and it’s still having these issues, then yea it’s crap, but I don’t think that’ll be the case

This may be a fluke or ? but just for grins I put a new aftermarket LCD display (not OEM) on my iPhone XS after updating it to IOS 18.1, and everything works! (true tone as well as Face ID). Even after three days it is still functioning fine! The catch is is that this is not a primary phone for me, and the LCD is not an OLED display....just a screen that I can't even REMEMBER where I ordered it from! Did not expect it to work at all so there it is! Go figure....

Do you know if Apple differentiates between refurbished displays and original donor displays? I ordered a refurbished display, but unfortunately the Repair Assistant gives me the message that it is "not genuine or may not functioning correctly".It could of course be that the seller lied to me and its not original. As a side note: I also had to transfer the front sensor with the flex cable to the refurbished display. EDIT: i just saw your other video, i think its clear now that for a succesful display pairing both units (display and sensor flex) are required. Thank you so much for testing it!!

It worked for me the first time with my iPhone 12. My earpiece speaker was not working and the display was also damaged. I used another iPhone 12 iCloud locked speaker with flex and display. Got back true tone an Face ID with same method used in this video.

News flash-someone reported that a NEW service pack for 12 pro max bought second hand did pair WITH FACE ID on iOS 18. This is a change. Before, for DIY the service pack from self service only worked for the exact device it was purchased for

Error can mean a lot of things-did you transfer the proximity flex from your phone? In the 12 the flood/proxy flex is paired to its native screen, you have to replace them as a set unfortunately or you’ll get an error

​@fakharsaleem2737 since the iPhone 13 the proximity flex isn't paired for face ID only true tone. However, it still needs to be an entire assembly to get it to pair. That means they had to transfer the screen with the proximity flex instead of keeping the original that came from your phone

Jessa did you delete the current FaceID data and try rescanning your face? I’m thinking the light pattern between the projectors could be the issue either Apple won’t allow this as it could be a security issue in their mind until they test out the process. Apple encounter this issue when you could break into an iCloud locked phone using access to the serial number lookup. That’s now been taken away as an exposed tool.

Did anyone get a part banned message when using parts from devices marked lost? What do you think the implications will be for devices out in the wild that have OEM replacement parts?

My understanding is that if you use an OEM part from another device it won’t show parts replacement message. But if you use a 3rd party part or part from a device that was marked as stolen or lost it will show the message.

@averagegamindad in the video, we could not pair a working OEM screen from a device we own that is not lost. We tried three times and it would not pair. It is possible this was a server error or other bug in iOS 18

She installed new screen and then upgraded the IOS with new screen attached hoping it would possible pair and register screen to device while installing new IOS. Ok, first i tried with two iPhones 12 mini, it didn't work, so what did i try, i copied the true tone code into the original screens from the old ones, and then i tried repair assistant and it worked just fine. Note that the flood Iluminator was the original one. Then i had an iphone 14 who came from other repair shop, but it was an incell display and they didn't copy the true tone code, so it was empty. I had another ip14 display and i tried to do it with repair assistant, result, nothing happened, till today it says that is unable to configure, but it managed to place true tone on it. Maybe on another update, it is still not working 100%. If anyone has a tip, pls share it with us. Greetings from Belgium.

Apple wants to ensure their customers purchase a new phone, or buy AppleCare. When you're obligated to shareholders, you're forced to make a profit anyway you can. What's surprising to me is how they've totally slacked off on other revenue generating streams. They allow Google to dominate K-12 education with Chromebooks, failed capitalize on FaceTime during the pandemic, and entirely ignore the enterprise market where Apple's highly integrated ecosystem makes it a no brainer.

I would wait a few more weeks to see if this issue gets fixed. As we've seen every year, even when the new iOS gets released there are bugs. In my past experience replacing a TrueDepth camera for a 12 Pro last year, I learned you don't use system configurator to program the new part. You need a Mac running Apple Service utility and the device you're working on needs the latest version of iOS to program the new TrueDepth assembly. Maybe that'll be the case with the Flood Illuminator? You do need a relatively new Mac to run Service Utility. I tried with my 2013 Retina Pro and it was too outdated.

It’s not! Customers deserve to know the repair history of their device…including Apple ecosystem repair. Whats fraudulent IMO is defeating the repair notices by transferring the SCREEN identity IC (the chips on the flex) so that the device still thinks the repaired part is the old original part and doesn’t show the message. FWIW I also think it’s inappropriate for Apple to hide their own repairs. If a device has been repaired either within or outside the ecosystem I think the consumer has a right to know.

The only purpose with changing screen ics is to hide Informatjon that the consumer and/or second hand buyer of the phone deserve to know. This is bad practice. You have nothing to be ashamed of. ​@@bobweiram6321the issue is, sellers already fake packaging and factory seal used devices. So by bypassing the warning, and then selling the phone as "brand new, sealed", that would be fraud. Also, selling the phone with the implication that everything is original, when it actually has a mix of parts from different sources, and a bunch of undisclosed history, is dishonest, and fraudulent. Thats not to say that everyone is doing that. The message is worded badly to screw independent repair, but its not a bad thing to know the device has been repaired. Its annoying to have it pop up when you turn the phone on. Its annoying to have it worded as though the parts are inferior, but its nice for someone buying a device to know that the device has been worked on, and that work has been disclosed. When buying a car, its would be good to know the motor was replaced 10,000km ago. Knowing is good, having a new motor isnt a bad thing, and that information should be disclosed. But winding the odometer back to 10,000km, when the rest of the car has done 300,000km would be dishonest. Bypassing a message that says "hey, your phone has been repaired before, but thats totally ok", is similar to winding back the odometer Its just annoying that the message isnt worded that way
