My prediction about Mengistu's future: My memories about Mengistu's dictatorship were in the process of fading away. Now, suddenly unpleasant memories were triggered by the two books authored by his two enablers, Fekre Selassie and Fisiha. After I read Fisiha's book, I wondered how he [Mengistu] is doing; what his future would be. Mengistu, I believe, has some kind of mental disorder/ illness. Based on his characteristics and behaviors he exhibited during his years in power, he is a typical functional paranoid schizophrenic. I have observed the man closely before and after he ascended to power. He is a man with deep rooted psychosocial grievances, overly polite, street-smart actor with ability to mimic others when he listens, conducts arguments in meetings... etc. he is skilled in rhetorics capable to induce anarchic behavior and to creat a mob like atmosphere that can lead to chaotic environment. He is also capable to choose his audience to recruit followers and to mold them into group-thinkers. Mengistu is more comfortable preaching to a large crowds as opposed to having discussion with a small groups. To para phrase Bealu Girma's observation recorded in his book, rightly defines him as a rhetorical man who loved to talk than to read. Mengistu in a discussion group listened well and able to grasp facts and events. But, his level of confidence degrades if he fells challenged. Yet, he is capable to exhibit pretentiously polite behavior to the person who disagreed with him. At the out set, he will make sure the discussion group membership is composed of people who are his followers. I call them "group-thinkers." If someone brought to the discussion something he did not like, he is good to mask his inner feelings even his anger not only by not being confrontational or threatened, but by creating a false impression by being friendly. If he perceived a serious threat, he calls (with secrete codes) with his hit-men (Daniel or Getachew Shibeshi) who were on stand by to launched a surprise hit in the middle of the meeting on people who are already in his black list - (General Teferie Benty et al ). This created an environment of fear on the rest of people in contact with Mengistu. After he destroyed lives he is capable to shift individual responsibility to collective responsibility and to makes himself free to shoulder the responsibility alone. This behavior is depicted in his book where he tells the reader that he has never been responsible for the killings in Ethiopia. Like all street smarts, Mengistu is a man capable to doge the truth and try to make you believe him. My personal experience with him was not different. I know Mengistu pretends to know everything (agriculture, economics, health, etc) and the group-thinkers around him falsely validated his believes that makes him feel good about himself. He loved building grand projects and institutions with little or no outcomes just to use them as his show-piece for domestic and international consumers. I have noticed Mengistu hates references from western scientific literatures. He called such literatures "imperialist fiction.'' Indeed he distrusted western educated individuals including Dr. Senay his mentor in politics.When he feels challenged, and when the outcome of the discussion in not to his like, his eye-balls roles fast right and left (looks like marbles in constant collusions, that I have never seen on other humans), he used his street-smart skills to some how maneuver or trick the group to build a consensus using the people who are his unconditional followers, people I call group-thinkers. Then, to create a semblance of democracy, he will propose a vote. Knowing well his followers would vote in his favor. That was how he did when Derge members voted to slaughter the 60 seasoned politicians, experienced high ranking military officers civil servants and others. Paranoid Schizophrenics are wired to be clever enough to manipulate others to their advantage. Within the Derge, Mengistu continued the same tactic to slaughter brilliant officers some with graduate degrees and who had different opinions about leading and leadership. At the end of the day, it was inevitable that his actions and his love to eliminate people smarter than him, people with different ideas, beginning from Generals Aman and Teferie, Colonels Atnafu and Asrrat, Captains:- Alemayehu and Mogus, who he killed in the basement of the conference room. Notice the Derge members he killed were with either undergraduate degrees or graduate degrees. Again, this is typical behavior of functional schizophrenics- they will eliminate any perceived or real threats or enemy. This brutality made the rest of Derge members, the military, and the civil servants to be submissive and made them group-think, "yes"men and feared Mengustu. A true leader is respected but not feared. Finally, after killing too many brilliant People:- seasons military officers like Generals: Getachew Nadew, Negussie, Afeworq, Fanta Belay, Alemayehu Desta, Hailu G. Michael. Tariku, and many more. I need not forget famous writers, thinkers and intellectuals like Bealu Girma. Mengistu's unchallenged illegitimate power served him for 17 long years. When "We the People," especially the military, recognized that Mengistu's rhetorics, his Socialist leadership brought nothing for us, when our standard of living regressed, when we lived in toxic environment, persistent fear, we passively resisted his power. Some of us run away to other countries. The paradox is, Mengistu's enablers, those who participated in the killing, those who harassed us because we rejected to become party members, and those who held hostage the families of people who made a choice to defect, are themselves in exile like the rest of us here in the USA and Europe. Some were arrested and returned to Ethiopia to face charges and some are still hiding. Time will come to hold them accountable and send them back; they can't remain hiding for ever because there is blood on their hands. Most educated men/women were either killed, or had to flee the country. Thanks to Yoyane. Those who are delusional believed they were still in charge, paid a price 20 years in jail despite a death sentence. They should be grateful to Yoyane they were not excited. Unfortunately the schizophrenic man [Mengistu] lives free and did not pay a price and/or held accountable for his brutality. Eric Erickson in his eighth stage of Developmental theory (integrity vs despair) tells us, as a child if a person is loved, if the person did well in life in terms of "Doing the Right thing" he/she will live a fulfilled life in later years. He called this stage ego Integrity. On the other hand, if the person is deprived of love, especially maternal love, did wrong thing and harmful things to others, if he/she violate Human Rights, if he killed if he murdered, if he inflict unjust harm on others, the person will live in deep rooted social and psychological grievances, and in misery for the rest of our life. Ericsson called it despair. Finally, in Mengistu's case, having lost his mother as an infant/child, his up bringing and his tumultuous life as an army officer (with General Haile Baikedagn et al) his behavior, his performance as a "leader" makes him fit the profile of a person in despair. He will live the rest of his life in Despair. If his schizophrenic behavior prevails he will convert to an out right psychosis and will commit suicide and/or end up in mental institution either in Zimbabwe or in Ethiopia who knows? Mengistu's photo, above depicts the persona of a boarder line psychotic behavior.
