On the high rep range topic, I used to do bodyweight calf raises to failure a few days a week before bed when I was a teenager. I thought calves were what made you jump higher and run faster, so I spammed calves. This means I was doing sets of 100 in no time, to failure (even though I had no idea what that meant at that point), maybe 5-6 sets. I would superset with pushups to failure and crunches. Well, my calves got huge and have stayed a strong point to this day. I know some people say to do heavy weighted calves for low reps, etc., but mine responded extremely well to the insane high volume approach. Wouldn't recommend the insane volume I was doing except maybe in a weak point training phase. I would wake up with cramps most nights, and often wouldn't be able to walk normally the next day since they were so sore and stiff that I couldn't fully dorsiflex my feet. Point is, don't be afraid to try out some crazy stuff. If it's hard and you're going close to failure, it's probably doing something, even if it's just improving work capacity and getting blood flow to your connective tissues, that's a net positive. On the first topic in the video, the fixation with the pump is still a plague. One thing I'll say for lengthened biased training is that you rarely get a good pump in a lot of muscle groups unless you're taking glycerol and a lot of salt. If you do get a pump, it doesn't last as long as with the typical bro pump work.
@urgamecshk2 ай бұрын
Calves a high volume muscle. They can deal with 10,000 steps a day. Of course a set of 20 is better then a set of 4
@doug25552 ай бұрын
I've heard that calves in particular sort of require high volume to get big. It's the type of muscle you need to train like 3 or 4 times a week at least, you pretty much don't see any growth with 1 or 2 even if you go hard
@urgamecshk2 ай бұрын
@@doug2555 anecdotally, I do 3x20 of standing (important!) barbell calf raises (on the rack, so about 3" below parallel) and add 5lbs every session (2 weeks) and they are growing. Start at 3/4 your bodyweight and the biggest struggle for a while will be the balancing.

Was deadlifting and bent over rowing hard the past 12 months. Went from 405x3 to 440x6 in that span at 40 years of age on deadlift. Decent gains. Back increased in size. Stopped deadlifting the past month because of paralysis by analysis, starting doing exercises to “feel” all the areas of my back and focused on the “squeeze”… one arm cable rows, cable pulldowns, 2 handed cable rows, etc. The isolated areas of my back got very sore due to high volume, however, my entire back is SMALLER because I dropped the bread and butter conventional deadlift and bent over barbell rows. Immediately added them back today due to this obvious fact. Thank you sticky Ricky.

I did the same after mostly putting off deadlifts for a year and some change, if not longer. Mostly pivoted to focusing on quads and back through other exercises and the carryover was incredibly surprising. I think the biggest thing to note tho, is you have to be dialed in on form through years of grinding, cuz I doubt this would translate anywhere close to as well for newbies or intermediates who never really deadlifted with a decent enough frequency.

Enjoying the process is such a strong one, one that worked for me. I've been out of the game for awhile due to my job but things are going to change, and one of those is getting back into that game again. There's a severe "want to" in there because its not about becoming large for me as a goal. Its that I severely enjoy this shit and I get rewarded for it. There was a time where I didn't, and I went into the "oh what's the best way...ok that's boring, but...sure", but I didn't progress. After staking off that and actually enjoying training though? Stacked.

That overhead extension comparison is no joke - I once hurt my shoulder and couldnt do anything but low tucked tricep pushdowns for like 4 months - lost all skullcrushers and anything overhead - my triceps shrank over an inch in that few months even though I was pushing the pushdowns twice as hard as I ever had pushed a tricep exercise in a last ditch attempt not to lose size, but it didn't matter. Then once the shoulder was good to go and I could do deep skullcrushers and french presses, I gained back the tricep size within the next year or so, and the progress was almost immediate.
@FunFactOfTheDay2 ай бұрын
Also should add, to get forced reps on french press with a curl bar you can just stand up against an incline bench and essentially bounce up and down, which can add a ton of cheat reps at the end if you dont have a spotter.

Ricky I can attest your tidbits and approach are 100% correct. I've made myself a subject of professor del Hagen tidbit studies for the past 2 years and followed your advice with eating and lifting. Drinking Milk, getting 4k+ calories and lifting as heavy as possible. I went from 180 lbs to rotund 235 lbs. I gained a lot of fat of course in my peak weight I was somewhere around 25% but now I'm cutting weight and peeling of that fat and let me tell you the pumps are out the wazoo. I'm aiming for 200 lbs goal for this cut and it's going to be pretty shredded, visible abs at least. So let me tell you I've made phenomenal gains in the past 2 years and I can't wait to start another year of the bulk and horse cockery after I've peeled some fat tissue.

2 reasons that make Hip Thrusts a relevant exercise choice over squats: 1: For people who have the time and don't want to tax the central nervous system as much as squats by taking certain muscle groups out of the movement which can create a more focussed approach in driving overload(similar to seated shoulder press vs standing military press) in that particular muscle group(and preferring to isolate the other ones seperately too) 2: For people/women who want to bring up their glutes and not other muscle groups(aka no thunder thighs)
