Mennock Pass Scottish Gold - MrDazP1's Gold Panning Experience Scotland

Summertime gold panning and Gold Prospecting in Scotland. The area around Leadhills and Wanlockhead has been mined for Lead, Zinc Silver and Gold over the centuries. Today I took my show on the road to this very special place.This is an account of my gold panning adventure filmed at the stunning Mennock pass in Scotland.
This is one of a few locations in the United Kingdom where you can get a licence to pan for gold. The licenses are issued by The Buccleuch Estate as part of The Queensberry estate.
On today's adventure the sun was shining which had warmed the waters up enough to go sniping and if you are not sure what sniping is, it is where you put a wetsuit on and try find the gold beneath the surface with your own eyes.
Wearing a wetsuit enables you to access parts of the river you wouldn't normally be able to and coupled with a sluice, it can improve your chances of finding gold.
This is also a great place to camp in the wild - which was also part of the adventure.
This is my account of the adventure and I hope it gives you an insight into how to find gold in the UK.

Isn't it a great place to spend the weekend. It can get a bit busy nowadays though but there are a few spots where you can get away from crowds.

I think that this place must be one of the most worked areas in the UK because it so easily accessible. It's still a fantastic location to go for a camp and unwind from everyday life when the weather is going be good on a weekend !

Avon skin so soft use in a spray bottle for midgy repellant,it's cheaper than named repellents and it's what is used by some locals

Yes James, you're spot on there. I've heard many people talk about Skin so soft at the river. I'm sure there's an Avon Agent round the corner from us who my Missus has just found out about. I used to talk to a well known panner in Wales and either he didn't get bit by them or just dismissed their existence and carried on regardless whereas I couldn't stand still without hitting the back of my neck or my arms every 30 seconds 😩🙂

Love your videos. I recently got a permit for Elvan water ( the other side of Leadhills). Have you ever tried it ?

Hi Ian and thanks for the comments, There's gold throughout the area and the history behind that particular part of Leadhills is fascinating. Especially around the Cluech named burns. The old timers used Hydraulic mining process to excavate the top soils and earth to see what the bedrock held. They did very very well out of it. I have met local prospectors who can keep on going back to certain spots and they too have found nuggets and specimens but stuff like this doesn't happen in a day. It's a long drawn out process to get down the river's cracks and crevices. Let me know how you get on and best of luck my friend

Hi Geoff, I think I need some inspiration too, I 've been panning the gravels in Scotland all week and the weather's not played it's part !. 30 deg C everywhere else but here it's been far from it. I've got to make a series of videos for the gold panning enthusiasts and community and then rest assured I will be back on the cycling videos again. Thanks for asking though.
