The Drúedain or Woses were wild men of certain forests in Middle-earth, and though they were a simple and peace-loving folk, they saved the world. Very interesting. The Woses are definitely one of those details that add to the richness of Tolkien's work. It's also worth noting that even during their very brief appearance in the trilogy, they (as personified by Ghan-Buri-Ghan) are shown in a deliberately non-patronizing way: Theoden and the Rohirrim army as a whole are very respectful of them; when Eomer questions how Ghan knows how large the enemy force blocking the main road is, the former responds by giving the exact number of the Rohirrim. A recurring theme Tolkien uses is that how something or someone appears can have little to do with their true nature; that certainly holds true for the Woses.

You have a score of scores, counted twenty times and five. They have more. Big fight - and who win? And many more sit around walls of Stone City."

"The Faithful Stone" was a legend of the Edain of Beleriand. The Druedain were loved by all the Edain and the Elves said of their laughter that it was a sound that never saw the Shadow. In the Narn, Christopher Tolkien says that ultimately Tolkien wanted to make Sador Labadal a Drug. For Hurin and Huor for a time were fostered in Brethil as they also came of the Haladin and therefore knew the Druedain and probably took them into their service when they returned to Hithlum.

The Druedain are an interesting and often forgotten part of the lore of Middle Earth. Like the Hobbits themselves they are a humble people in touch with the land rather than a "great" people and they bear more similarities to the native cultures of Africa and Southeast Asia and the Americas than to the Europeans that some people assume make up all the "good" societies of Middle Earth. It shows that Tolkien was not as racist as some people think he was and that all free and sentient beings should put aside their differences and unite against evil.
@cool06alt

You are absolutely right, rather than trying to make elves with..dark skin complexion why not telling these often forgotten stories? I really hope in the upcoming tv series amazon would tell the story of Aragorn in haradrim working with often potrayed as fully evil men, also maybe in Rhun working alongside with the two blue istari. If there is a possibility of grey morality in tolkien legendarium, it would be stories set in the enemy lands.

Interesting. So if they came from south of Mordor - that may also explain their original - always present - hatred towards Sauron and all his servants. PS. What's truly ODD (at least for me) is their "magic" - the one you've described - about making the "stone statues come alive" - that looks a lot to me like "the making of trolls" - stone-creatures that would serve Sauron, though in this case - they'd probably create them to help fighting against their enemies...

@@thaumatomane You are right "The Golem is a creature from Jewish folklore which was a clay figure animated by a holy man. It was generally unable to speak, lacked a soul, and followed orders like an automaton. The original Hebrew word can mean "an unshaped form" or figuratively "a stupid person". The creature originated in the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah, which holds that those who study the holy books and are strong in the ways of the Lord may create imitations of His miracles, but only imperfect ones. As God made Adam from clay, so may a holy man create an imitation of a man, albeit one lacking a soul." In Tolkien Legendarium, powerful magic were defined as loremastery, magical music, sub-Creation. Druedain making living automaton could be categorized as the last.

It really has struck me and I don't know why not before, but the whole Tolkien world as created by "Illuvatar" is a cruel ant farm much like our own. From flawed creation sprung from the thoughts of Eru the ONE to the suffering and chaos visited upon Elves, Dwarves, men, Ents and orcs. Perhaps that was Tolkiens point, if there is a God, then it is a creature of cruelty and capricious malice that feels none of the sufferings of IT'S MUSIC. It takes no responsibility for IT'S creatures, Anuar and Maier, ultimately ignorant and sociopathic actions. If that was Tolkien's purpose, then he really succeeded. If not, the Elves wouldn't fade. Men would fall from lofty heights. The dwarves wouldn't disappear into into darkened holes. The Ents wouldn't just disappear after their companion Entwives disappear. The orcs wouldn't even exist to hate the world and each other, then get slaughtered again and again. Tolkien basically rewrote the Bible except its even sadder.

Elves fade because middle earth was meant for men until it's remade by eru with the valors, elves and dwarves help making it less susceptible to corruption. Middle earth was imperfect because melkor wandered around away from the other valor and his music was wrong and didn't match not because some all powerful being wished it. And even if he did so what? Obviously Eru is all powerful and if he says only valor matter then only valor matter. If he created all then he can decide what really matters and what doesnt

A question: It's a common theme in Tolkiens work that Evil never *creates* - it only corrupts. But still, after the ultimate Triumph of Good with the death of Sauron, still none of the creative force returns to the world. Instead, everything except humans continues to slowly fade away into legend until only the mundane is left. Doesn't this still seem like a final triumph of evil or at least the decay of the good? For all that is achieved in defeating the evils of the world, it doesn't bring back any of the true power of good. It strikes me as odd that this is just...kind of generally accepted by the free peoples of middle earth. I would at least imagine that at some point, they would try to regain some of the secret fire of which legends tell. Elves might be content traveling to the west to live among the Valar... but imagining that humans (or dwarves for that matter) are simply content with letting all the magic go seems kind of pessimistic. Or even absurd... Tolkiens very own work and its success is a testament to how much we humans yearn for the fantastical, how much we wish to bring every bit of magic into the lives we possibly can - how much we want to escape the mundanity of everyday life.
@MrMartechi
@MrMartechi 5 жыл бұрын
@pyropulse I've never seen that line of argument before. Usually, the general idea seems to be that the diminishing of magic is part of the original design, not of morgoths corruption. Maybe there's a part of the legendarium I've forgotten about, but the closest thing to that topic I can remember reading is a passage early in the silmarillion, where illuvatar explains to the valar how even Morgoth's discord was included in the creation of the world to contribute - not draw away - from the whole. The whole point always seemed to be that morgoth, no matter how hard he tried, never could actually corrupt the earth or damage it, because anything he'd do would become incorporated into the greater scheme of things

I still love his work a great deal, but I also recognize that he had his own failings and hypocrisies, like any other man. It is, admittedly, a bit disappointing to see how he disparaged the Celts, particularly for someone as "enlightened" as him, so to say, but I guess it makes sense. He was a man of his time and place, for all that entails, both good and bad.

Hey Yoystan! Hope you are doing well. I know I am kinda late but I will try to ask this anyway: from the less known groups, peoples and ethnicities of Middle Earth, which of them is your favorite? Which of them would you prefer to learn more about (in case it is not the same as the favorite)? Some examples: Avari, Eastern Dwarves, Drúedain, Troll-men, etc By the way, Merry Christmas. Today is my birthday and a video of yours is a great gift

I am still waiting for that feanor character history, but no need to hurry at all. Just do your own thing. Also it would be cool if u played lotro during ur livestreams and answer questions at the same time. Have a nice chrismas

They were similar to the brownie legends here in the UK. They were meant to represent the older ways before men became settled and farmed the land and domesticated animals. When the first farmers came here to the island of Britain the hunter gatherers of the mesolithic would have haunted the forests as the farmers gradually cleared them. Many scholars think legends such as the brownies are echoes of a memory of these ancient folk. This was Tolkiens reference to such ancient people

So since Illuvatar only planned for men and elves to exist according to the Silmarillion, where did the other non-evil races come from? I Know about the Dwarves being made by Aule disobeying Eru Illuvatar and then being forgiven after submitting his creations up for destruction, but where did the rest of these other creatures come from?

Hobbits and Drúedain are subspecies of Human. Ents were created by Yavanna to protect her forests from her husband's creation of the Dwarves. The origin of the Giant Eagles is unknown but they were probably originally Maiar that took animal form.

@@labrynianrebel the eagles were descendants of some Maia that served Manwe. They're called his "Messengers" at some point if I'm remembering right.

01:04 "Unrelated to Hobbits and Dwarfs" ? Objection! The Druedain are most certainly related to Hobbits. As they are both (hobbits and humans) related altogether far more closely than too Elves, Ents, Eagles, or the Khazâd from Aulë. Neither are they Maiar. Unfortunately, they all (druedain, Hobbits, humans) are closer to Orcs than the rest (arguably).

Not to be a dick but all but the last one end in sauron winning. Frodo would have died and whoever picked up the ring would have fallen to the shadow. Again Frodo would have died and the ring brought to sauron. Gollum would have brought it to mordor or died by an orc who would have brought it to mordor when the ring decided to betray him

The Druedain warned Aldarion and the Veanturer's guild not to travel & explore Middle Earth. That their desire to explore would eventually become a desire to dominate and exploit. Gil Galad wrote to Tar Meneldur to tell him how much good Aldarion and the Veanturer's were doing by interacting with the low men of Middle Earth and that they were helping to keep the Shadow (Sauron) at bay. Somehow, they were both right.
