The beginning of the Second Age of Arda saw the creation of Númenor and the foundation of many Elven realms in Middle-earth, before the Noldor went on to create the Rings of Power. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about this part of the Timeline of Arda in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

1600 years of peace. Thinking of it, Elros basically ruled Numenor as long as the entire history of the First Age from the first rising of the Sun to the War of Wrath. So too did Sauron pretend to be Annatar before the One Ring was revealed, about 400 years.

They should make an RPG where you can explore 1st and 2nd Age Numenor and can sail to Middle Earth, Elder Scrolls style. Valinor can be within sight but can not be reached, as an ultimate tease. Who am I kidding? Modders will crack the barrier to access Valinor in no time. 😂😂😂

Great video as always! I appreciate how you point out places where the history of Arda is unknown, uncertain, or has competing views. You present the evidence, make a good argument for the most likely answer, but let your viewers make the judgement for themselves also. I like that a lot. This really helps us see that LOTR is not just telling a story but writing a "history" as it were. This gives these tales so much more depth and makes them all the more enjoyable.

It seems, according to LotR Appendix A's discussion of Eriador, that not all the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains emigrated to Khazad-dum. It is written there that at least some Dwarves remained, especially in the southern Ered Luin where they still had working mines. Sauron did not distribute any of the Great Rings to Dwarves or Men until after the War of the Elves and Sauron when he recovered all but the Three Rings of the Elves that were crafted by Celebrimbor.
@MenoftheWest
@MenoftheWest 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed! I saw that when I was doing some research as well! But I wonder if they were Broadbeams and Firebeards, or if they were Longbeards, or if they were all three? I think there were always Dwarves in those mountains, but the vast amounts of the Broadbeams and Firebeards migrated away. Thank you for mentioning that here, my friend!
@otaku-sempai2197
@otaku-sempai2197 3 жыл бұрын
@@MenoftheWest I don't think that any significant number of Durin's Folk dwelt in the Blue Mountains until after the War of the Dwarves and Orcs when Thrain II led his people there in T.A. 2802(?). Any Dwarves living there before that time would have been Broadbeams and/or Firebeards.

@@adrianciobanu5856 I would think that by the end of the Third Age, Sauron had pretty firm control of all of the East of Middle-earth (though the Blue Wizards might have succeeded in undermining his power to some extent). It seems unlikely that the Rhunic Dwarves entirely resisted Sauron's corruption; nor do we know how well the Avari Elves fared under the dominion of Sauron and his servants. If Fankil survived into Tolkien's later writings, as a servant of Melkor, he would have been long dead by the time that Sauron rose back to power in the Second Age.

Hi Clapton. I also [at my advanced age] found it hard going - kept mixing up the characters' names and had to dash from glossary back to story - then I put it on a doc. and used Bold and Underlining to sort things out, and it worked well. I could do my own indenting etc...too. (While I'm not into Elven Rituals or learning Runes, The Silmarillion is vastly more meaningful and fun than the Old Testament.......so excommunicate me!!)...... love from W. Province, SA. After the War of the Ring Aragorn had the city destroyed as there was still an evil stain on it from it's time as Minas Morgul. I think Yoystan will correct me if I'm wrong here, but if I recall correctly Aragorn entrusted Faramir with this task as he was now the first Prince of Ithilien and the tower overlooked that region. Eventually the city was rebuilt as Minas Ithil but I don't think the "when" is specified (again Yoystan may correct me here).

Perhaps because it was an island of heroes, who had taken a stand with their Firstborn kin against the overwhelming Darkness of Morgoth. Perhaps because there was so much potential for good. The Numenoreans were given every gift the Valar could offer. It was Aman for the Dunedain. Their flora and fauna came from Aman delivered by Maiar. They were instructed by Eonwe himself. The Valar even "cheated" as much as they could and gave the Men of the West long life. In the end, the only thing that the Kingsmen of Numenor wanted was the one gift the Valar did not have the authority to give. Tolkien's lesson is clear: even if there existed a greater, more gifted subrace of men, they would still be subject to all of the shortcomings of pride, hubris, wrath, and envy that all of the Children of Eru must wrestle with every day.

it is important to have timelines through which to reflect, what has happened and why. This sort of timelines have tendency to leave me with irritating itch to check many things that have only been implied in them. Deep roots have many things in Arda on the foundations on which many things are build are ancient. In this part of the timeline we can see beginning of the many things, that are important during the War of the Ring. It also gives us further nsight on Sauron and on scale of effort he put in his quest to rule them all. Though the title was self given Lord of the Gifts earned it as well.

Could you do what-if Thingol didn't ask for a Silmaril? I feel he only died because he was wrapped up with the Doom of Mandos, and it would be interesting if he survived to the second age

If I'm not mistaken Narsil was forged by a dwarf who's name I don't remember for Elendil the tall (Isildor's father arguably the more famous Elendil) I could be wrong that's just off the top of my head.

It was forged in the 1st Age by Telchar of Nogrod, who is also famous for the dagger, Angrist, that Beren used to cut a Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth. Telchar is perhaps the second best weaponsmith of all of the Children (adopted or not) of Eru.

Here's a question that never occurred to me before: why DIDN'T Sauron know about the three Elven Rings, since he supposedly was going to use this strategy to conquer all the Free Peoples? And why did he forge the One Ring before, as far as he knew, getting the Elves to make rings?

When will people realize that the Silmarillion is real history, that Numenor was atlantis, both were real, and ended in a single cataclysm at the end of the last Ice Age. That the helcaraxe was the remnants of the ice sheet used to cross back to Europe after North America was wiped out by this event - when 80% of large mammals died across the continent. When will men and women remember their beautiful - if painful at times - history on this planet and start treating each other better. When will they remember their true purpose in this realm? To bring beauty to this wonderous universe that has somehow come to be from the initial quantum vibrations that tolkien so eloquently labels the "ainur". Perhaps one day.

Just a suggestion. When you do the What's Different videos months apart, it kinda makes me forget what the previous What's Different videos were saying. Maybe have them a bit closer together. Possibly every other week. "Just a suggestion."

Me finally realizing Aragorn and Arwen are distantly related....no wonder Elrond was opposed...dude must have been like “yo that’s my great great etc...nephew...” which also must have been super weird, having lived so long to see your brothers descendant who then fell in love with your daughter. lol. Ah well, at least it’s not like it’s a Turin situation.
