Men of the West

6 жыл бұрын

The land of Númenor was the island of the Dúnedain (the Men of the West) during the Second Age. This land produced many strong heroes, but as time went on, pride and arrogance caused the Downfall of Númenor. However, the catastrophe would allow for the creation of great kingdoms in Middle-Earth. Thank you all so much for watching, please let me know your thoughts on the history of Númenor in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!
Thank you to Izzi Saeta Cabrera who created the excellent art of Númenor (8:11-8:17)! You may find Izzi's work here:

In my humble opinion, the story of Numenor is the most important story in Tolkien's Legendarium.

It's also his finest piece of writing. Akallabeth is an example of how precision and poetry can live together in perfect harmony. Tolkien's work is often falsely described as "flowery" but when reading the Akallabeth one can see that the opposite is true: there isn't a single extraneous word in the entire work.

Everyone wants to see Silmarillion adapted into a movie, but what they really should do is an adaptation of Akallabêth. It probably would be very depressing to watch one of the greatest empires what men ever build to fall in ruin by Sauron's corruption and treachery, but damn it would be awesome to see Sauron on his prime and detail everything he did to turn the hearts of men to evil. We could actually see why they call him "Sauron the deceiver".

Tar Palantir's attempts at returning the people back to Eru and the Valar were inspired by the biblical king Josiah. Both men tried to turn their people back to God (Eru is equivalent of God in Tolkien's mythology, with the Valar as archangels), but their attempts were futile because the people did not go along with the repentance.
@MrBigCookieCrumble
@MrBigCookieCrumble 6 жыл бұрын
Was just about to comment this, the resemblance of the stories is clear to see and rather touching. Much like Josiah tried to get the people of israel to celebrate passover again, Tar Palantir tried to go back to worshipping Eru again. There are many other things like this both in Tolkien's work as well as C.S. Lewis'.
@johnycoho7830
@johnycoho7830 6 жыл бұрын
Well not quite futile Josiah bought Judah some time before Babylon invaded, and many of that generation repented it is because of this that God made sure Judah wasn't conquered until after the death of Josiah. Because one of the Kings before Josiah was evil and also did human sacrifices and led the people to do the same, God said Judah and Jerusalem would be destroyed. When Josiah became king and he and many of the people repented judgment was pushed back. Unfortunately Josiah's children were not like their father and were also did evil. Had they never gone astray but remained steadfast like Josiah it is likely that it would have been much longer before Judah was conquered.

Mr BigCookie well they both are christians and tolkien helped lead cs Lewis to jesus who use to be an atheist scholar. anyway. tolkien didn't mean for his work to be... I'm not sure the exact correct word. an allegory ? tolkien didn't mean for his work to reflect exactly on our world today and it's history. it is a separate entity created with its own story maybe inspired by his beliefs and our history and myths legends his life experiences and what he saw as good and bad etc... :)
@zachstevens7382
@zachstevens7382 6 жыл бұрын
Mr BigCookie cs Lewis did more of that with his fantasy works like the chronicles of Narnia. tolkien has always expressed his work to be separate of our world today with no exact reflective examples. the lion in narnia is jesus while eru in lotr lore is a god figure who sung all life into being. he created the Valar to tame and create life on middle earth. he just set it into motion. morgoth seems to be the devil figure though and sauron like so with sin I guess but like I said, tolkien didn't desire this kind of cross reference. the Valar were maybe angels but also not. because they could create and manage life like a god themselves. the Maiar maybe we're angel like or fallen angel like.

I mean I sympathise with those who hated the Valar. The Valar came and saved the Elves from Morgoths manipulations at the dawn of their creation, then invited them to come and live with them in a virtual paradise where everything is immortal and nothing dies. Then the first Men awake and they have no one to guide them but a divine being (Morgoth in disguise) who teaches them about the world and to fear the Valar. They were children listening to the only adult in sight because the Valar weren't interested in beings that did not possess the beauty or grace of Elves. Now Men couldn't go to Valinor, as living there would torment them with their own mortality and not allow them to grow into a distinct people, forever being looked down on by the Immortal beings around them. But they should have been protected at their conception from the evils that tainted the world, and the fact that the Valar sat back and did nothing is a mark of shame on them. The Numenoreans should have put everything into claiming Middle Earth and just ignored the West. It would be interesting to see where the world would be if they had done so. If men being corrupted by Morgoth is symbolism for Adam and Eve being corrupted by the snake and apple then it is a poor one. Adam and Eve were WARNED by God not to eat from the Apple tree. Men of LOTR never had that. They woke and listened to the only divine being who came before them.

So basically, we're blaming the inherent evil in Men on "bad parenting".
@tehhypo
@tehhypo 5 жыл бұрын
Well, it was a little more complicated than that. The Valar taught the Numenoreans civilization in the beginning, and they were completely confused about why Men were so hung up on living forever, since Elves and the Valar thought of immortality as a disadvantage--basically, you live forever, but you have to watch the world change around you, and all your mortal friends die. Now, I'm less willing to forgive the Valar for giving up hope on the non-Edain Men of Middle-earth. I mean, all the non-Edain can go screw themselves, and they have to live in terror of Sauron and Morgoth's monsters for three thousand years, because SOME of them fought for Morgoth. Thanks for being racist, Valar.
@animalia5554
@animalia5554 5 жыл бұрын
tehhypo The inherit problem with aesops like this is that there’s no way to now how people would react to them in real life. Would they be upset to watch the world change or would they find it an exciting adventure with each new thing that comes? On watching your mortal friends die. The problem with that question is two fold. One since they are the only ones who ARE mortal is it possible the feelings would be different if EVERYONE was immortal? Second, some people might always be sad about watching the people they love die, but they could *also* take a glass half full approach and see things as a chance to make new friends. In short, it’s a matter of perspective and without know way to now how real people would act towards immortality, the idea that EVERYONE would look at it the SAME seems weird. The idea that some might view it as a curse, some a gift, and some as something in between makes more sense to me. But then, we have to remember how old Tolkien is, it makes sense that others have taken the theme and have refined it. See the manga UQ Holder for a discussion on the pros and cons of immortality. But be prepared for fanservice.

I *think* Eru Illuvatar might have a "weakness" that is exposed by his reluctance to directly intervene in Arda. He is so *vast* and so *powerful* that he can't make Subtle Actions of Creation or Destruction. He can't raise a Lonely Mountain, he raises a Mountain Range when he tries. He can't crush a City, he sinks the entire island when he tries. That explains his reliance upon the Valar and the Maiar to get things done. It's not that he doesn't *want* to interfere... it's that he *can't* interfere without creating incalculable collateral damage in the process. Eru Illuvatar didn't need to *directly* intervene against Melkor's Evil, because the Valar and the Free People were more than a match for Melkor. Eru Illuvatar *did* need to intervene against the Numenorians, because the Valar and Maiar couldn't do anything about them... and there weren't really any other civilizations that could oppose Numinor. Eru Illuvatar was the only one that *could* intervene... and he did the big smashy thing.

I was awarded the third prize and I was so excited for it, to the point that it was hard to believe it. Watching your videos reminded me of those days, when I spent so many hours reading Tolkien. The end of Númenor makes you think how short the life of men is. It is true that Númenor was the greated kingdom of Men in Arda, which was even greater than many of the Noldor Realms in Beleriand. However it’s fall resulted in the creation of the largest kingdom in Arda, first of Gondor (which held Enedwaith, Gondor proper, Calenardhon, Harondor, Umbar and Near Harad, and the East Lands in Rhovanion) as well as the Reunited Kingdom with the unification of Gondor and Arnor under Elessar

I came across this video to refresh my memory on Numenor's history and this has become the best telling of the island's history that I've ever heard! It covers all the major events and describes enough for even newcomers to get an idea of what the kingdom was like from beginning to end. I especially liked how Thunder Dreams was used as the background music as Numenor began to fall into shadow. The music was so haunting that for me it has become the music of Numenor's fall. Once again this is the best telling of the story that I've ever heard and I do hope Men of the West that in the future you make a video that covers even more details of Elenna and how it's beauty was truly something to behold and remember.

The Lords of the Valar brought the Caliquendi to Aman, and that ended in disaster, because of Manwe's utter foolishness in allowing Melkor out of the Halls of Mandos. Much later, the Lords of the Valar brought the Edain to the island of Elessa, also called Andor, the "Land of Gift", to found the realm of Númenor - and that ended in disaster too, because Eönwë failed to capture Sauron, and the Valar failed to hunt him down afterwards. You'd think they would have learned from their first mistake - but no, they had to repeat it. So much for the 'wisdom' of the Valar.

They say that Manwe literally cannot comprehend or understand evil and that Melkor literally cannot understand goodness- it's foreign to them so I think that's why Manwe and the rest of the Valar so gravely underestimated Melkor.

I read The Hobbit as a child and occasionally watch the LoTR trilogy extended edition, but I have always wanted to read the books and delve deeper into the beautiful universe Tolkien made. Your videos are beautifully told and with the backdrop of art, it further captivates the deeper lore to the viewer. These are amazing, and they've finally inspired me to get to reading the books.

Exellent video Yoystan! Sorry that i have missed quite a few recent videos, i have been a little busy in my personal life and i didn't really have much time to catch up (but i am now and i am really loveing your recent videos , especially the recent What if). But anyway, i am glad you did a video on one of my favorite kingdoms of Men that is Númenór. It is a kingdom so magnificent and beautiful, and it's a shame that the evil of Sauron had torn down it. But at least their was those faithful. And i really love it's similarity to the tale of Atlantis! :)

Excellent vid as always. One note, the Numenoreans of the royal house (those descended from Elros/Tar-Minyatur) would live about 400 years while the Numenoreans not descended from Elros would live around 180-200 years. This posed an issue withe Tar-Aldarian who took as his wife Erendis who was not of the royal House, such that even though the began with great love for one another the difference in how they aged aided in the rift that rose between them. Thus they had but one child, a daughter Ancalime, and became separated thereafter. Not having a male hier Tar-Aldarian changed the custom that the eldest child would inherit the throne whether male or female, so that his only child would succeed him as opposed to his nephew Soronto. Aldarian also made it official law that the ruler must marry within the line of Elros, so as to avoid the issues that he himself endured. These changes in custom and law set the stage for later developments that eventually led to Ar-Pharazon's marriage to his cousin Tar-Miriel and the usurpation of her title. Later as Numenor drifted away from Eru and the Vala the lifespan of the royal line began to wane, such that by the time of Tar-Palantir they could expect to live to 200-250 years.

very instructive and well done video. Just two points: 1) perhaps a separate video on the Black Numenorians 2) it would improve the quality of your videos if you would show the names of the special figures mentioned (just like you write the dates), for those like me who do not remember or know well the stories and persons mentioned. The subtitles do not always give the correct spelling.

Numenor's destruction and total ruin was the ultimate accomplishment of Sauron, more even than his rings. Sauron appeared as a fair priest among them and by treachery DESTROYED Numenor to the point their temples were to Melkor. Eru blew up the entire island (Mu, Atlantis) in punishment thus setting the stage for LOTR and Strider (Ranger) restoring Numenor.

@paulmayson3129
@paulmayson3129 5 жыл бұрын
@@unlimitedperseverance1706 No, as revealed by Tolkien in his chapter "Myths Transformed" in The History of Middle-earth Morgoth's Ring, the Silmarillion that we have is a collection of true stories which have passed to the people of the late Third Age (and thus to Biblo Baggins who translated them in Westron) via the people of Numenor, and thus it includes some mythical elements that were added as it describes the world from a mannish point of view. Because of this, while the Calaquendi (Light Elves of Aman) knew that Arda (the Earth) was always round or that Anar (the Sun) and Ithil (the Moon) were celestial objects and not fruits of Telperion and Laurelin, and that their Ainur merely protected them. Thus as the Numenorians actually lived in a spheric world but believed that they lived on a flat world, then they were flat earthers, and so was everyone in Middle-earth, except the Noldor and the Sindar (and maybe the other Quendi)

The Calaquendi (Light Elves of Aman), such as the Vanyar, the Noldor and the Falmari, had this knowledge taught to them by the Ainur, the Valar and the Maiar, who were angelic/spiritual beings which helped Eru Illuvatar in the creation of the world. So they had direct knowledge of the shape of the world by those who helped make it.
