I had a similar experience - there was a definite learning curve with the cup but now that I got it I'm never going back! Maybe try a softer one until you get the hang of it and then you can try the stiffer one again. In my experience, the softer ones leak and spill more but the stiffer ones come out all in one piece, so you can just pour the blood into the toilet.

I thought her videos were great too! I personally LOVE menstrual cups because my flow is just so heavy, but I know other people can find them difficult. I'm glad there's such a range of products out there so people can find what works for them. Also, about the blood spilling when you remove the cup, I've used them for years and it almost always spills during removal for me -I just wash my hands really well after XD

She is super knowledgable about what cups work for different issues and bodies and explains the different cups thoroughly!! I have used the Lily cup (they do also have a more compact one) and it was a thinner and less rigid silicone which sounds like it would be better for you. It also has a neat shape that might make it easier to insert.

I think pelvic PT is going to really help you. You could be amazed how addressing the physiology of the region could change the flow issues. And you may not be able to avoid all the mess unless you removed a cup very frequently, which is a lot of tissue shear on your vagina. That isn't a great idea.

For the cup, if you want to try again, I recommend the MeLuna brand. They have 3 different options from "firm" to "soft". I have the "classic" cup and it's softer than others I've tried, so I wonder if their softer option would be better for you! A softer cup would probably hold the folded shape more easily than a firmer one. EDIT: Also, they have different lengths! I have a very low cervix so I have a "shorty" size, but they have longer ones as well which may help you reach all the way. It sounds like you may have a high cervix. My sister has to use a longer one because of her small hands + high cervix combo. But their customization options might be a good idea to try out!

Hi there. I’m not an ostomy patient, but I do have experience with using menstrual products other than tampons etc. I’ve always been very surprised that menstrual cups are over the counter, sort of “several sizes fit most”. When I used a diaphragm for contraception, it was necessary to have a gynecologist “fit” me for it. Not sure how manufacturers of these cups think their otc products can fit everyone. Anyway, long before menstrual cups became more main stream, I used my diaphragm for the very off-label use AS a menstrual cup. I loved it! I will say when you mentioned using your cup for 8 hours, it seemed like a very long time to go without emptying it. Maybe your gynecologist could more properly fit you either for a menstrual cup that works better for you, or ask if a diaphragm could be used instead because they come in so many sizes. Best of luck.

I use a cup made out of natural rubber and it is so much softer than the silikone ones. But if somewhat sturdy objects are still too hard you could think about using natural sponges. You can buy a big one and cut it down to the desired size or buy packs of menstrual sponges online. They are very flexible and tender, also washable and reusable. But you might run into the sam absorbtion problem. Also I love how you are casually sharing gorey period details with your boys

I don’t exactly have your problems but I came close to getting a colostomy and I watch you now just because I love your posts and I know that you helped me regain my ability with my disease. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which is a connective tissue disorder. You might want to concentrate on pelvic strengthening... and remember your body is NOT healed yet! Go at your pace. I could never wear a tampon..ever. I ended up getting my uterus out as it attacked itself every month. But if I had done the pelvic therapy maybe I would not have had that surgery!! Keep trying! I use a cup and LOVE it - would never ever use anything else. With a cup you don't really get the spilling on removal - so long as its not too full. I've never tried a disk but i get the impression the only way to removed it is guaranteed to spill it and cause a tsunami! i think once you've fully healed a softer cup would definitely be a good option for you!

Even outside of the barbie butt community, it is good to see a young woman discussing these issues. I've seen some that say they are using such products as a cup, but never go into the nitty gritty of it. You're honesty about the situation is really inspiring and helpful to hear about, even as a colon owner. I also think the way you talk about it in front of men is really good, considering how many women struggle to talk about it even with their husband or long term male partners. I really enjoy these nitty gritty videos alongside your day in the life style ones, thanks Maggie x

I love your videos and the fact that you are so open with things that so many of us are going through. I haven’t had the same surgeries as you, but I’ve been struggling with pelvic floor issues since my small bowel resection. My OBGYN says it’s prob from having so many surgeries, and my insurance won’t pay for pelvic floor therapy. I’ve heard about the discs making messes when you take them out, I know some brands give you a little bag to dispose of each one. I love that your husband is so support of you, and is there through everything. I was venting into a cup one day (insurance wouldn’t cover ferral bag at the time) I ended up dozing off, I haf one of those falling asleep spasms, and the cup and contents flew all over my sleeping boyfriend. He laughed it off and assured me it was ok when I started to get upset. Thanks for your videos Maggie!

I’ve seen in the latest comments that someone recommended Always Infinity Pads. I agree. They’re the best for a lot of blood and also clots. I understand what you’re expecting... Even though I don’t have any problems with my rectum I do have very heavy periods with lots of thick blood and clots. And they can deal pretty well with waterfalls that’s coming out with no warnings. Unfortunately tampons are really bad option for periods with clots... also I heard that there are some good period underwear like thinx and also you can use those really large pads that are designed for bladder weakness like tena pads. Btw I love your channel! Wish you all the best and hope you will stay as positive as you are, because you are a true inspiration!!! Sending love!

Do some research for different types of cups, there are some that are more flexible and easy to insert. Unfortunately I also have problem with reaching cup, but after few months of using cup I got used to placing it correctly and taking it out. First of all get familiar with your body, size and position of your cervix, it helps a tons! And most important do not freak out. Just stay calm during whole process.

I don't know how I found you, but I love you! And we need to talk openly about these things, because a lot of people have problems and we need to help each other. I think it might be helpful to visit a gynecologist because of how your uterus is without the usual support, you might have to use a bit of a different technique. I love the cup, but you need to practice to get it to fit and take it out properly. I've only tried one, but there's probably more flexible ones out there. I used to have heavy periods and got a hormonal iud over 5 years ago. It is absolutely amazing! Now I barely have any periods, I need a small pad for a few days and that's it. No other side effects, no hormonal affection. It sucks to put in, but then you're good for 3-5 years depending on the model!

good luck figuring out how to make cups or discs work for you! Everyone's body is a little different, so it can take a while for anyone. For example, my cervix is low, so I cut the stems on my cups, or else they stick out! Also, my flow was at times heavier or more clotty, and especially with big clots, it can leak easily with a cup. I have found that on heavy days I can't go 8+ hours without emptying my cup. After practice though, I have gotten really used to dealing with it anywhere, including being prepared for squat toilets with no running water!

Definitely try a softer cup, but don't give up on them yet. You may just have to wait until your wound from your proctoectomy is fully healed and not sensitive. The blood mess is just inevitable when using discs or cups.

Good on you for trying and trying again! I’d advise looking at the “Put a Cup in it” website. The info is awesome and they explain the differences in the different cups and disks. You can get reusable disks that have a “string” to help with removal. I’ve used a cup for quite a while now and can totally see why you’d struggle with it. ❤️❤️❤️ Side note, I bleed heavily and during my first couple days I fill a large cup (50mls) in a couple hours, so the “up to 12 hours of wear” is different with each individual.

I have tried several different cups over the past 10 years and so far my favorite is the flex cup. It is soft silicone that opens easily but not aggressively like some of the firmer silicone cups do and you pull it out more like a tampon since as you are pulling on the stem the seal brakes from the inside of the cup.

When I first was you period video, I also thought of the menstrual cup, but as a previous commenter stated they have a steep learning curve and if your muscles are not strong enough the cup tends to be painful and not stay in place. I know there have been months were my pelvis floor was not strong enough. I have endometriosis with heavy periods, and have to empty my every my cup two to four hours. I do not know that I have to pooling effect, but I have what I call the waterfall effect. That is when you stand or change positions and it feels like the floor gates opened and their a swoosh but blood. The first few cycles with the cup were definitely a blood bath, but I have learned to minimize mess and even change my cup in public. Glad the disc is at least helpful. I use gloves many times then changing my cup in public just to keep things cleaner.

Try running the cup under warm water before insertion. It'll soften the silicone which theoretically makes it more pliable and less likely to pop open prematurely. Softer smaller cups may work too. If you have a cervix that sits lower down, you're going to want a short cup (I wonder if this is part of the issue - that feeling where you can't get it in far enough. Since you have short fingers, you might want a longer stem, but trimming it can help). Try a bunch of folds- seriously, google them- I would suggest trying punch-down, triangle, or 7 fold. Anything that has a narrow top and a base that you can pinch for longer. You're probably going to have to work at bearing down in order to get it out. The suction means that you need to get the cup low enough to break the seal before removal. Depending on your anatomy, it may be able to move higher up as you go about your day. Sit back on the toilet and slouch. Hopefully in doing so, you'll have an easier time with insertion and removal.

Menstrual cup lover here- look for a softer cup. Those usually work much better for getting in and are more comfortable when there are weaker pelvic floor muscles (since you no longer have to use them with bowel movements). There are lots of softer brands, and many are starting to release smaller sizes. Best of luck.

The lena cup is a VERY firm cup. A softer cup will stay folded easier, and will put less pressure on your wound. Check your cervical height. If you can't reach your cervix, you have a high cervix. In that case, a longer cup will be easier to reach to remove. Longer cups often fold down smaller too. Websites like put a cup in it are a great place to research "specs" on a variety of cups so you don't have to try so many to find your "goldilocks" cup. Precious stars pads here on youtube also has a TON of content about reusable menstrual products, and she actually helped with the design of the lena cup

I don't know if the brands you're using do this as well, but if they don't I'm just gonna throw this out there: I like the Flex menstrual cup. It has a little tab you pull (it has a ring on the end of the tab to make it easier to get ahold of as well) that breaks the seal created by the cup when you need to remove it. I have heavy flow/clotting and I have never had a bad experience with removal. Blood will spill as you'd expect, but it's not a violent explosion.

Hi, I also have a very narrow and tender opening though luckily I also have a short distance to my cervix. The Softdiscs didn't stay in place for me, but the Flexdiscs do. The thing is they will fill up through the day and you have to dump them. Sitting on the toilet and bearing down, get it out, and then tip it so it empties into the toilet. Then squeeze it again and get it back in. This should be doable without getting much blood on your fingers (gloves will help if you are squeamish at all). You can also hold a wad of toilet paper in your other hand as a barrier between where you're pulling the disc out and dumping it, and the toilet seat. It may also help to have your knees higher to push your cervix forward and help with bearing down, so using something like a squatty potty could help. Some people also like to just remove and dump in the shower. You can put it back in, no worries, for a total of 12 hours before changing it. Some people are so good with their muscles they can bear down which tips it so the blood spills into the toilet and then they can kegel it back into place. That sounds like the best party trick ever, but I'm not that talented. I do find my vaginal opening is much less tender with using discs than with tampons. My body grew a semicircle of non- stretchy skin instead of stretchy at the bottom of my vaginal opening, right at the front, so before having surgery to cut down the middle of the extra skin and sew it to create a larger introitus (the anti barbie surgery) tampons were super painful, let alone sex. Now that 6 o'clock spot (looking from the front) is still tender and can still tear and bleed if it's got too much pressure on it, but the sides of my wall are much more flexible and allow for easy insertion and removal. I will also say that having a bidet has really helped. Cleaning before, during, and after disc dumping or disc changing is really great. I also drop the used disc into an old flex bag right next to the toilet with a scented fabric softener sheet in it for easy disposal. And then I use the bidet on gentle and warm setting, and then wash my hands. For changing in public, I bring one empty gallon ziploc (it opens bigger for disposal!) and some moist baby wipes in a travel container. Those are great for the vaginal area, thighs, and hands. So I can dump my used wipes in the ziploc after dumping the disc, and put the used disc in if I'm replacing. Some people don't like dumping and just change the disc every 2 to 8 hours, using Thinx or other period panties as a backup. The Facebook group The Uterati is great, just thousands of supportive people who get periods, with the Flex team as admins. Read there for more tips. Good luck!!!

Here's a possible solution (it's what happened to me years ago, though done "accidentally", not on purpose.) Get pregnant now, as it'll give you 9 months plus breastfeeding months of absolutely no periods! (Mine came back 9 months after giving birth, when breastfeeding slacked off...I had one period, then became pregnant again! Followed by another year after giving birth of no periods--I loved it, and the surprise 2nd baby, too!) After that, have a hysterectomy...you've earned it! Good luck, I know you'll find a solution that's right for you.

@Mia Smith Once you remove a structure, all manner of things can happen to your abdominal wall/vaginal wall, especially if your abdome has scar tissue from IBD. Of course, some male physicians don't think about this because they don't have a uterus, so they aren't too worried about removing it. Talk to a lot of ladies with your diagnosis before you go forward with this.

@@gmtech68 True, but the no periods after childbirth benefit is completely dependent upon how long and how much the mother breastfeeds, due to hormone levels that control ovulation being suppressed by breastfeeding. Totally breastfeeding suppresses ovulation, hence no periods for as long as the baby's nursing 100% (which is usually only for 6-8 months or so, if the mother doesn't supplement with formula, which cuts it down depending on the amount of formula given.) Less breastfeeding = less suppression of ovulation, followed of course by periods returning. No breastfeeding usually results in periods returning after about a month or so. (Bummer.) And thanks to my long-ago "surprise" pregnancy, I'm now a grandmother of two cute little boys! Best wishes to you and your wife, as well!

A softer cup might work, but also insertion / removal are important, even though the area might still be too tender for you to even try. A cup shouldn't pop open, but "unfold" more or less gently. Try to find a fold and a technique that allows you to keep the cup folded with your fingers as low as possible on the cup, and to find a way to release it gently. I'm able to do this pretty well with mine (it's a generic one found in a supermarket), maybe it's softer than yours? The removal should be a bit easier than with the disc, as you can grab the cup from its lenght / stem instead of having to reach all the way to the ring. To remove the seal, squish the bottom of the cup gently. There might be spills if it's too full but they are usually controllable and the majority of the blood should stay inside the cup. Spotting after a spill happens because the vaginal walls are coated with blood from the spill, no matter how well you clean, it's gonna greet you later in the day :) It happens even with the first day if the cup/disc was not already there ;)

The cup popping open can be painful or awkward in general, but it may help to try all of the folds outside of your body several times and see which one has the smallest pop. If you try again with a different cup you could try making sure the fold is facing towards your urethra(this is uncomfortable for some but not all) so that it's not as sharp against the surgical area. I personally get it about half to 3/4 of the way in before I lose my grip on the fold so I can control the opening a bit and check that it has opened completely and formed a seal, then push it the rest of the way in by the base. It may also just be something to try down the road when things settle a little more.

You have to find the right one. Put a cup in it also have a website where you can have a test and they suggest you the cup they think you should use.

I have read similar horror stories about menstrual cups elsewhere. When I was looking into menstruation alternatives, the marketing for cups made it seem like it was the best product for women everywhere. Long story short, I roll with tampons to this day. I'm glad the disks seem to work for you. Maybe after sometime getting used to it, removal will get better.

I have tried 3 different cups and there was a BIG difference in flexibility! One of them was so stiff that when iI inserted it and it opened, it felt like something was tearing inside... Currently I use a LadyCup and it's definitely my favorite menstrual product. Sometimes it feels like a small smack when it opens, but it doesn't bother me. I know there is a guide on the internet that compares different cups and their sizes, firmness, ease of use etc - it could be helpful if you ever want to try a cup. I'm not poor, but I can't afford buying many types of cups just to try either, so it's great that someone have tested them for me :) Also: learning to use a cup is not straight forward. I probably got comfortable woth using one only after my 5th or 6th period using them. There were two main issues: inserting the cup far enough in (otherwise it will press on your urethra and make you feel like you want to pee) and taking the cup out without spilling.

My experience with a menstrual cup was quite different from what you described. I used a rubber one during the last 10 or so years of my period, and I really loved it -- wished I had discovered them years before. It was a little tricky getting it in at first, but once mastered it was quite easy. As I recall, it did NOT seal against the cervix though. It sealed in the vagina just above those constructive muscles whose name I forget now. Mine had a small projection at the bottom, to use to pull it out, so there was not all that reaching you described. And it didn't splash all over when withdrawn, though it could be quite full depending on circumstances. But it was just a matter of withdrawing it and tipping it out into the toilet. So what you described sounds quite different from my experience. but maybe the design of this gadget has changed since I was using it about 15 years ago. And of course, your surgeries and sensitive spots might make this not a good solution for you.

I would recommend you looking into the Lumma Disk - they are reusable and they have a little silikone „string“ to reach the cup a little easier. That should also allow you to pull the disk out while sitting on the toilet so if blood spills, it goes where it’s supposed to :D also there are several different firmnesslevels of Cups so I would recommend looking into precious star pads KZbin- she has many comparisons. but Cups and Disks are a learning curve - it took me about a year to not need a backup pad and I still wear one on my first days just in case my cup fills up before my usual 8 hours :D

I use the Diva Cup. The best way I have found to insert it is to kind of wrap it around my index finger and hold it with my thumb and middle finger. As I slide it in, I use my index finger to guide it higher. It stays folded until I move my finger. I have trouble doing it while sitting down so I usually have a wide stance with my foot on the tub edge and squat a little. You could try this technique. I have been using the cup for several years now and this has been my go-to way. I haven't had any surgeries but I do have pooling when I sit or lay down. I do usually make a mess changing it out and will spot but I think that just comes with the territory. I just use a liner.

The most important thing with menstrual cups is that you get the one that fits you! Therefore you need to measure a lot of things line how far your cervix gets down. You also need to know how strong your pelvic muscles are, because that's very important for the thickness of the cup, and how easy it should bend. Just buying a cup is unfortunately the worst thing to to, because it will most likely don't feel good...

Probably tmi but I use a diva cup, I have crohns and pcos so all the issues in all the downstairs holes! But I find the diva cup is so flexible! Because of the pcos I am super heavy and super full of big clots so I tend to wear period pants with the cup. But I also find taking it out while sat on the toilet is less messy and easier to bare down. Also some people cut off the little pipe on the bottom but I left mine on until I was completely comfortable with taking it in and out. Also for changing it while out in public, I do it while on the toilet and the wipe it with toilet paper before reusing it, I also carry wet wipes in my purse so I can wipe my hands before leaving the stall. Hope some of this is helpful. Love your videos, love you and keep doing what you’re doing! X

The small Lily cup is the one I have more success with. It's quite soft, and it has a different shape than other cups in the market. It doesn't has a rim at the top ( I find those quite painful) and it's long (it makes it easier to reach because it makes it more difficult to get lost there. However, it might not work for you, depending on where's your cervix. They also have a model that it's more like a disk, if you prefer that option with the advantage of being reusable.

I've used a few different cup brands and I've used the softdisc in the past. I had the same leakage issues with the disc as you, so I switched back to pads for a while. I have both sizes of the diva cup, but those don't always seal for me either. I really, really like the shape of the Lily cup. It doesn't have that hard rim like a lot of the other cups do and it has this slope design at the opening that's different from any other cups I've used that helps with sealing. I'm going to try the Flex cup next time Ruby visits. It removes like a tampon, so hopefully it looks less like I just murdered someone with that one!

I had similar problems with the soft cups. The nix is a much softer, reusable disc that imo, molds better to all the crevices in there due to the softness. Also makes it easier to get in and out imo. I removed it while sitting on the toilet till I got use to it because it flung everywhere the first time. I do check it throughout the day to make sure its still seated and kinda "hooked" on my pubic bone which you don't have to go full finger to get to. When I take it out, I just unhook it from the pubic bone. Still a little messy but I manage that. Hooking is the only word that makes sense to me on how to describe it. I've had problems with all other ones but I've been able to use the nix for up to 16 hours (not on purpose, just busy at work on my feet all day) and be in awkward positions with it in which I could not do with the regular softcups. It's been the only thing so far that has worked for me.

Having used a diaphragm for birth control for a while I can tell you that a squatting position helps the short finger problem. The second thing is that it does get messy and 8 hours is about all you get if you have heavy periods or lots of clotting. I had very heavy periods and had accidents routinely with pads and tampons just fell out. I often squatted over a disposable hospital style bed pad in the bathroom and had moist cloths ready for clean up, like baby wipes. It's a process. Then wipes and pad were bundled up and disposed of. But since no external system worked to keep me tidy at work the diaphragm worked. If you have leakage your gynecologist can fit you for the correct size and they are reusable but you do need to clean it thoroughly. The one Ihad stained and looked awful but it worked. Now, this was many, many years ago when the pill was pretty new. I had been on it for a long time and the Doctor suggested going off it to give my body a rest. That's how I discovered my diaphraghm made my periods controllable. Maggie, nothing is good for 12 to 24 hours if you have pooled periods or heavy flow. So, you need to change the disk or diaphragm (same thing) in the morning if you wake early and again by afternoon or before you go out in the evening or afternoon. It's a hassle but you can do it and manage without accidents if you remember to change and give yourself an 8 hour time frame before you get to a private a bathroom. I was able to work by changing just before I left for work and immediately upon return with a pad if I had to work overtime to extend my length of time.

@Mia Smith If your ex is not paying child support and you have two young kids you go to work come hell or high water. Sometimes you work two jobs and still do laundry after work. You wake kids to do homework if it was incomplete, cook for the next day and collapse with four or five hours of sleep. It's worth it now they are self sustaining middle aged adults with their own kids and happy lives. Don't regret a minute but back then I'd cry from exhaustion and fear.

I just recently started using the discs and it took me almost 4 days to get to were I could remove it with little to no blood spills. I have small hands as well so I have the same problem with removing them. I use the Flex disc and love them, I do get some leaks during the day if I have used the bathroom since it will shift a little but it will move back and then be fine. If I’m having a heavier day and I’m nearing that 12 hour mark and go over I might get a little leak too but normally I’m fine and have no problem with them. I really love the Flex discs and they have some different flow options so they know how many to send in each shipments and different shipping options as well which is nice. I would check them out for sure. They also make a cup (which I have not tired) but if you wanted to try a different cup maybe in the future or just a different brand you could look at theirs as well.

I'm sorry you had so much trouble with the cup. I'm genuinely not sure what to suggest, other than practice, but clearly if it's still impacting the wound, then you definitely should wait for that to heal before maybe trying again. And/or try a different make. That said, of course, not all things work for everyone... but for me, I didn't need to hold it right at the rim to keep it folded, I could pinch them lower, which gives you more of it to insert before your fingers make contact. The luna cup was super soft, I found, but it does depend. But perhaps the cup you had was much stiffer than mine. I've never had a cup spill while in use - It can spill on the way out, but I imagine less so than the disks, and if you remove it over the toilet, then any spillage goes straight into the loo anyway. But if you're losing so much blood as to fill the cup in a few hours, I would suggest that you're bleeding far too heavily. I say this as someone who ALSO bleeds super heavily. Partly it's the trick of bearing down a little to move it closer to the entrance and also using your fingers to break the seal - that tends to make removing it a lot easier and less messy. But I think being a cup rather than a disk also helps a lot. I have a huge problem with "flooding" (thanks endometriosis and adenomyosis plus a healthy dose of fibroids) and I definitely found menstrual cups the best option (when I was able to use them - pain became a big issue eventually even for something as soft and comfy as a cup). But absolutely, it sometimes takes a while to find the right cup - they're not all the same and what works for one person won't always be as effective for another. For me, I found the lunette cup the best but your miles may vary. I would only say that if you want to use cups, don't necessarily give up straight away. It's easy to forget how much time it took as a teen or whatnot to figure out exactly where to position pads for best protection or how to use tampons properly - and the same can be true for a cup (though I got it fairly fast, just a couple of tries and way easier than tampons) and as with choosing other types of sanitary protection, finding the right one is sometimes a case of trial and error. It's obviously harder because of the price - but when you consider how many pads and/or tampons you go through, it soon works out. I'm sorry it didn't work so well for you. I hope that maybe in the future, you might feel up to looking at some of the other options, as they do vary a lot in size, shape and comfort for each person.
