00:00 Peaky Blinders Menswear Review Introduction
Since its debut in 2013, Peaky Blinders has been one of the hottest TV shows. You even see people with T-shirts saying, “By order of the Peaky Blinders” these days. Other than graphic tees, it has influenced menswear with the resurgence of 20s-style silhouettes.
03:21 Who Were The Real Peaky Blinders?
There was actually a gang called “Peaky Blinders” in the Birmingham of the 1880s until the late 19-teens. They were known for vandalism, burglaries, mugging, and street fighting. Eventually, they conquered rival gangs and became involved with underground casinos, sports betting, and protection rackets.
05:00 Historical Context & Period Accuracy
The 1920s, especially the latter part of it, were a transitional period for menswear. In the early part of the decade, pants or trousers were much slimmer; everything was more inspired by body coats.
Towards the end and into the early 30s, things changed - the drape cut was invented, everything was fuller, and, later on, even pleats appeared. Also, shirt collars changed dramatically; whereas before, your detachable collars that were washed and started separately from the shirt, the Americans really favored softer attached collars that were much more comfortable to wear.

26:35 Oswald Mosley (played by Sam Claflin)
27:55 Michael Gray (played by Finn Cole)

30:47 Our Overall Assessment
I would say, very accurate. The fabrics were accurate, the cuts were often period accurate, and they also paid attention to the accessories like suspender buttons and the suspenders. Maybe the overcoats weren’t quite long enough at times, but still much longer than in many other period shows.
If you want the original old experience, Vintagebursche has a really great video about that.

I've been dressing sharp the last few weeks (thanks to this channel giving me the encouragement and confidence) and most people say I have a peaky blinders look but I have never even seen the show so this is a good video for me to understand. Personally I do not like those caps but I do wear a fedora sometimes. One problem with watching this channel is that now I keep noticing faults with previous purchases such as my cursed shirt fittings that now I need to get altered. My first tailored 3 peice suit will be collected in a few days so Thankyou for the inspiration.

@@unrealwayx5011 For me, a lot of it comes down to sending out the right message. I do own some really nice casual clothing but the way people respond to me when I wear a suit is far more positive than when I would wear outfits similar to what you have described. It takes some dedication to suit up for every time I leave the house but for me it is worth it because I am working towards trying to improve my life one step at a time.

really appreciate that your assessment of the "historical accuracy" includes an acknowledgement that many of the choices the characters wear are the result of deliberate costume design! i feel like i often come across videos that are exclusively talking about what is Correct To The Era without considering that costume designer's job is to represent the characters, narrative, and setting in a particular way first and represent the era second.

Wonderful video as always, I love learning history in general, but ESPECIALLY when it comes to fashion and even crime such as gangster fashion. I would absolutely LOVE to see a analysis on "Better Call Saul" with it being one of my favorite shows. In reality the peaky blinders existed before the 1st World War, and by the twenties had been removed from Northern English towns by strong policing. The problem is most TV shows never allow true facts to get in the way of a good story line. There were major riots in the U.K. after end of the First World War, but we’re dealt with somewhat violently by the authorities. Including sending a Royal Navy Battleship off the port of Liverpool, and turning its big guns in the direction of rioters, who got the message, and backed off( no shots were fired) Remember having a British Empire that covered a quarter of the globe till the 1950s, knew to how put down major riots.

Regarding the name "Peaky Blinders," one source claimed that it was due to the angle that they wore their newsboy caps tilted at: high on one side to show off their coif, and consequently covering their eye on the other side.

In "The Peaky Blinders The real story" by Carl Chinn (a cracking read that I recommend to everyone" he dove into archives of interviews of people who grew up under the reign of terror of the Peaky Blinders. One of them said that the name came from the hairstyle. They would" have it short all over apart from the fringe which would be plastered down the forehead over one eye, 'blinding' them". Another point to note, in the early days of the Peaky Blinders (1870s) an interviewee said they actually "wore billycock hats pulled over one eye, peaking the other side into the air and blinding the eye covered. " So it is still a point of contention on where the name comes from but it is certainly not the "blinding style" lol. Great video otherwise!

For a better understanding you should know that a cut across the forehead generates a heavy bloodflow down into the eyes, thereby making it hard for your opponent to see (much worse than sweat blinding the eyes). Wiping tends to make the mess worse, and it all serves to distract your opponent.

Not a movie, but I'd really love to see you take a look at Red Dead Redemption 2 some day and see what kind of outfits you create. My favorite thing in that game was dressing up Arthur.

Adrian Brody’s character insulted Tommy’s clothing. Perhaps this inspired him to dress a bit nicer.

No, it’s a metaphor. He says that every stitch of his suit has blood, and Tommy’s isn’t as nice as his. He was basically saying that he was much more lethal than Tommy is.

@@alexman378 at that time, Americans were a bit more refined than the stuffy Brits. He appears to be wearing Italian silk instead of British wool.

I always assumed the haircuts were a military thing as they always reminded me of what I've seen on Marines my entire life (I'm from San Diego so there's a lot of them here lol).

It made sense to wear three-piece suits with higher buttoning points. They didn't have modern heating and air conditioning systems. They didn't spend time in cars or public transport. Why would you expose your neck and not wear multiple layers when it's cold? We do the same thing when we go outdoors.

I’m commenting before watching this but from what I’ve seen the fashion in the show is pretty spot on for the time, however the main characters break so many rules, rules that definitely wouldn’t be allowed to be broken by the time they get into high society and hang around socialites. Tommy will show up to a formal white tie dinner wearing a heavy tweed 3 piece suit, a collarless dress shirt, and a massive overcoat. They wouldn’t even let you through the door. However given his status and reputation, I’m sure most people understand that refusing him entry would result in their property being burnt to the ground, their entire family murdered and thrown into the river. They’d probably leave him alive just to let him stew in the despair.

Not directly related to this video, but I want to mention that, Ada's clothing in S6 was adapted from Pol's, the actress of whom passed away prematurely. This decision is quite intended.
