One point to bear in mind with your MCB/RCCB is the neutral won't be disconnected in an over current or short circuit condition. Depending on the manufacture's requirements / instructions it can be an issue. There is a different part that Hager have ADA932U - Single Pole & Switched Neutral - 6kA B & C Curve Type A 2 mod wide (36mm) RCBO that may be a better choice in this use case. With the ring circuit it will may will make testing a little more complex and I'm sure most licensed tradesman would figure it out I could can see a scenario where it causes problems. I have no problem with your solution meeting or exceeding the rules & regs, its that by simply extending all the conductors 1 to 1 you avoid the call back should the EV inspector come out and issue you a defect notice (which has happened) and it wouldn't have taken much more work. I try to follow the KISS process as there is no shortage of stupid people out there...

@@socialscene6361 I am retired now but as a designer I had to make sure that any metal enclosure that held mains power was provided with a dedicated Ground connection. Also had to provide an additional Ground connection for the cover as it was assumed that the fixing screws were/might not be adequate in some way. A bit over the top perhaps but that was the requirements then and the QA were ready to pounce if not present and that included the placing of Green Earth Symbols at the connection points. To comment on another question from someone, was not the change from Plastic to Metal enclosures due to the requirements of Fire protection?

While there are cases where you don't want to link the earths out because of DIN terminals connecting them together (rings as it makes ring testing a problem for example), IR testing isn't a good reason, as when IR testing your CPCs should be connected to earth, there's never a test which has them disconnected / isolated...

16:11 We use the one with metal connections all the time in Belgium in industrial and domestic .. difference is we don't need to to any EIRC's for every circuit . Also we do'nt have any order of connecting the earth to the earth bar like in UK . ( needed when you need the isolate the earth of 1 circuit to measure ..) And in this case its confusing if earth's are already connected together before entering the fuse board .. Yello-Green color with no metal connection also existst i think .

Exactly for this everybody use a metal enclosure for. If you not like saved earth level do you use a plastic enclosure e.g. plug, socket, aso. So many countries change from metal CU's (and products) in the 60's to plastic CU's for more safety to the people. Funny that the UK change now back to metal products.
@gbexpatcornishman3004
@gbexpatcornishman3004 Жыл бұрын
In the UK, in many properties the CU is located in a cupboard under the stairs. Electrical fires, often attributed to poor electrical workmanship, are not contained by plastic enclosures. So the logic goes: return to metal enclosures. The wording in the standard, BS7671, is ' ... non-combustible material ... ' if I remember correctly. The intent is to contain potential electrical fires enabling homeowners to escape their property ... and reduce the risk to emergency responders who arrive to effect a rescue.

If you use tuf sheathed or steel armoured cable. You would not require the rcd at the consumer unit. This would also prevent you having no segregation between the 30mA rcd in the board or the built in one in the EV charger. Also make it easier as you will not either have to isolate the ev one turn the function of on the device.

I thought you shouldn’t disconnect the cpc to do an ir test. Surely the neutral could be nailed to a copper pipe that’s earthed and wouldn’t read down with the cpc disconnected? Unless you repeat the test between the neutral and the earth bar and defeat the point of disconnecting the earth in the first place? Excellent videos thanks.
@effervescence5664
@effervescence5664 2 жыл бұрын
You should always be repeating tests between all conductors, but if someone was to test IR at the new board without knowing the din rails are on a communal earth bar in the other box any power circuit would throw up a dud reading because of the lighting circuits. Unless you're linking neutral and live to test against CPC. Basically any future EICR will have to be carried out from the box regardless because of the hybrid circuits anyway, as feeding a 32 Amp radial off a ring is fine but feeding a ring final circuit off a radial can be a sod.
@jamesdyas542
@jamesdyas542 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. So if there was a multi gang switch with upstairs and downstairs lighting circuits that would throw a dud as well? Suppose you could not interconnect the earths. Never thought about it before.I understand ring mains are different. It’s just I see it a lot where they disconnect line neutral and cpc from the d.b. and do an I.r. To me your not testing to earth, just to the cpc in the cable of that circuit. The dentists rooms commonly have a 32 amp rcbo then a 6mm feed to a double pole local isolator then a 2.5mm ring main. Nothing wrong with it.

3 additional RCBO’s would be required. That’s £90. Extra hour or two of labour finding the mid point of each circuit and making sure you haven’t accidentally disconnected any sockets. That’s another £90-£180 (to client). You then end up with 6 socket circuits that need a lengthy description on the label. All this for what purpose exactly? Because ring circuits are no longer fashionable? If it ain’t broke…

I think UK regs don't allow singles inside trunking because it can be easily open and leave the cable exposed with only one layer of insulation. UK regs are very insistent on always having two layers of insulation at all times, hence the use of "twin and earth" cables which are double insulated.

We have a double standard for 32 Amp circuits though. Traditionally UK power circuits as a radial will be done in 4mm because it's unlikely to ever be at max load. However an Electric Shower, Oven or Hob would be run in 6mm. Then 40 A would be 10mm and 63 A would be 16mm. Just British things. 16:16 This DIN-Rail parts are old. In the history all electrician bond all saved earth (green/yellow cable) together at one point into the house in the earth. So they bond all green/yellow over the metal together. In our modern world with RCD/RCBO/aso. we use the saved earth big differently as before. So the companies should sell products with yellow/green colour but not metal bonding to the DIN-Rail. Possible some british firms could produce this product? Funny that other electrician have make same wrong mistake before. 🤗🤣 Yes, no names ...

@@Satters Yes, you'd have to test at a ring point because you still need to confirm during any testing that the ring is indeed intact. Preferably from a testing and fault finding stand stand point you would feed a radial from a ring rather than the other way round. The situation in the video though is one of the most ideal circumstances to do it the other way round though.
