Thanks Emily! And thanks so much for sharing with your daughter. They unfortunately don't teach mental math in school anymore, and it's so important to understanding relationships between numbers. I ban calculators in most of my tutoring sessions so that the kids can build some mental muscle 💪😅

Very useful! I'm going to share the dividing by 5s with my daughter. We're working on mental math. Thank you!

Hi Erica, so glad you enjoyed it and happy you're sharing with your daughter!! How old is she? I wish they still taught mental math in school. It's so important for pattern recognition and problem solving. (plus some brain muscle 💪😅)

@@SharpCookie She is actually only 7 and in first grade. Lol. 😄 But she is advanced and learning multiplication and basic division. We homeschool. She's been getting good lately at mental math with addition and subtraction and I thought I'd see if this interested her as well. If not yet, then I'll have the material for next year! 😄

@@EricaRayLanguage That's perfect! I've read that doing mental math between the ages of 5-10 is the best time because more connections are being created in the brain. You're setting her up for being a better problem-solver and increasing her memory and concentration. I'm going to do a video on the benefits of mental math next because they're so many! And I love that you homeschool!

Whenever I have the skills to do it w/o pulling out my phone calculator!

I love that you try to do it in your head first! Many of my students have used a calculator as a crutch for so long that they don't even remember multiplication tables, haha

Wow, that's extra brave of you then for watching a video on math! You're not alone!! There's even something called mathematical anxiety. I've had a lot of students that would do or say anything to avoid having to do math because it stressed them out so much.

So cute! I have totally been approaching this a different way so I'm looking forward to see if I change how I mentally calculate dividing by 5 :)

Cool! How have you been doing it?

@@SharpCookie I've been breaking things up into 5 pieces in my mind! Sometimes I start with 2 and then move down to 3 and 4 and then 5 lol, it makes it sound very long and tedious when I write it out!
@SharpCookie4 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting! I'm always curious by how people solve the same problem in different ways. One of your strengths might be with sequential reasoning which sounds like what you're doing when you first do 2, then 3, then 4, then 5. Usually people with that strength are very good at planning and organizing.
