Fred & George are just shy of 17 in this one. They're 3 years ahead of Ron. Ginny is one year behind him. Percy has already graduated and works at the Ministry as Crouch, Sr's junior assistant. Hermione turned 15 right after school started. Ron turns 15 before school ends but Harry won't turn 15 until a month after school lets out for summer. In the book both other schools were co-ed just like Hogwarts. Except for Fleur's little sister the other 2 schools only brought students who were old enough to compete so they are all 17/18 years old. The movie made it much too easy to figure out that Moody was actually Barty Crouch, Jr. We never heard about or saw him until Harry did in the book, which is when Sirius and Dumbledore told him about him being sent to Azkaban and in Dumbledore's memory of the trials and at the end. In the book everyone actually thought Barty Crouch, Jr had died in Azkaban. As for the 3 tasks: 1. Harry's dragon did not get loose in the book. 2. There were a few creatures in the maze they had to get past. The only task that was pretty accurate was the one in the lake (except Dobby gave Harry the Gillyweed not Neville). Harry also did a lot of spell training with Hermione before the first task and then with both Ron and Hermione before the maze task. What you see in the movie is about half of the book...if that much. Sirius, Dobby, Hagrid and Rita Skeeter, in particular, had mich bigger story lines in the book. You would dislike Skeeter even more in the book..think tabloid reporter. To be fair Ron really did just realize that Hermione is a girl and not just one of his best friends. He doesn't even realize that he's jealous. Ron is more than a bit clueless even for a 14 year old. 😂 It's not just being overshadowed all his life. All 5 of his old brothers are known for being either popular, smart, talented or successful (or a combo of several of those). Ginny is the baby and the only gurl so even she overshadows him. Then he becomes best friends with a boy who's the most famous kid in their world and a girl who is the smartest, most talented student in their year. Harry becoming a champion was just the last straw for Ron and his inferiority complex kicked into full blown jealousy and anger for awhile. Most Death Eaters are "purebloods" who think muggles, muggleborns and even half-bloods are or should be beneath them. Voldemort offered them a world where they would rule over all of the people they consider lesser than.

Great summary! I’d go further and say that the movie is just a small portion of the book and more of a visual aid. I just rechecked, and the movie is 2.5 hours long, but the audiobook is 20+ hours, so impossible to include everything. 1 thing among many that I felt needed to be included, was Winky and JRs story. Crouch Sr discovering Winky with the wand, Crouch Jrs full confession about escaping, Sr helping him escape Azkaban, and how Harry saw Sr on the Marauders map when he was supposed to be ill/missing.

The aspect of Voldemort ruling through fear and brutality is a really interesting facet in the novels, because at times it works against him in ways it's hard for him to foresee, usually because him being the type of person to rule through fear affects his value judgements and not always in good ways, the first and best example being the fact that he couldn't foresee the type of old magic protection that would be created by killing Harry's parents in front of him... Love is a blind spot for him, it's not something he utilizes in his rule, let alone personally knows, so anything that comes from it befuddles him. He's a being of extremes, and he thinks that makes him free, but it restricts his world view from the subtleties of human nature, and at times magic.
@user-dx2dm8oq8g5 ай бұрын
Agreed. You cannot have undying loyalty through fear. His death eaters would betray him if someone stronger took his place. Only unhinged disciples would be devoted to him. That's his weak point imo. If Voldemort was charismatic, suffered at the hands of muggles, had a code of honour and showed other emotions, he would be more threatening because he'd win over more people, he'd be able to put himself in other people's shoes and predict their moves, work on his shortcomings. His death eaters would feel valued and love him.

In the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore explained to Harry that Priori Incantatem is what happened when their two wands with matching wand core connected. If you recall from the very first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone or Philosopher's Stone when Harry got his wand Mr. Olivander said that the phoenix feather in Harry's wand had a matching feather in another wand that came from the same exact phoenix. The person that has the other feather in his wand is Voldemort. Harry found out in the book version of Goblet of Fire that the phoenix was Dumbledore's bird, Fawks. Because Harry and Voldemort has matching wand cores it means the wands are equal in power and relation. The wands really are brothers. As Harry's wand began to slowly beat Voldemort's wand it caused the Piori Incantatem spell to happen. That means the last few spells that a wand made reveals itself. So in this case not only did the last few murders that Voldemort's wand made expose itself to everyone in the graveyard, in the book version it also showed Wormtail's new silvery hand first as well. 🪄💥⚡️🪄

great putting that out! Also the reason why Voldemort was losing to Harry! Although they already pointed it out while commenting! The easy way to know how old a student is in Hogwarts is that it almost matches the school year they are in. You first start attending Hogwarts at year 1 when you are 11 years old. Then year 2 when you are 12. Year 3 at 13 years old. Year 4 at 14 years old. Year 5 is 15 years old. Year 6 is 16. And then your final year at Hogwarts is year 7 when you are 17 years old. You two did a REALLY good job at piecing together a lot of stuff that many others miss, and stuff that you wouldn't really know without reading the books. First, well done spotting the tongue thing. Lots of people miss that for some reason (including myself when I watched the very first time when the movie came out). You also picked up on the fact that Krum was bewitched by Barty Crouch Jr., with the specific goal of helping Harry get to the portkey. Krum was bewitched to attack the other contestants except for Harry, which is why he simply left Harry alone after he came face to face with him. You also paid attention and noticed that Barty Crouch was one of the ones who tortured Neville's parents (some people gloss over that, forgetting Neville's last name is Longbottom or just not registering it), which adds an extra layer to the scene where Barty tortures the spider in front of Neville, which is why he got so upset. This isn't a spoiler per se, because it doesn't address this in the future movies, but his parents are actually still alive, but they were tortured to the point of insanity.

In the book the Moody secret was a tad more subtle in execution. The “on the nose nature” was definitely a result of just how much they condensed the contents of this particular book, as the original work is 700ish pages long (when Rowling started going bonkers with page count), so for pacing reasons this film really made things more obvious for the sake of cuts/rushes than previous entries which were much shorter novels.
@mentallygonereacts8 ай бұрын
That makes a lot of sense! It’s why the movies sometimes seem a bit confusing, or why it’s a little easier to predict when things happen (like with Moody). They either have to try to fit in as many details as possible and then it comes off a bit more rushed/obvious, or there’s way too many details and they can’t fit them all because of the lengths of the books. Your comment made me excited to read the books because I’d love to see the slower building, subtler approach and the intricate details we miss in the movies. Have you read them all already? 700 pages really is bonkers, but I’d 100% read it, especially for a story like this one so far!

I'm so glad that you're back to this guys! You already know about Priori Incantatem, why the two wands connected. But there is an interesting question about this and an interesting consequence. The question is, why did Harry's wand overpower Voldemort's and not the other way round? After all, in terms of sheer magical power Voldemort is incomparably stronger than Harry! You might remember me saying that character and intentions matter in magic. In that moment, Harry accepted that he might die and that's something that Voldemort would never be able to do. He fears death more than anything. So harry's courage was the thing that made his wand so much more powerful! The other interesting thing is that Voldemort at this time has no idea that the wands are twins, so he doesn't understand what happened. He's very scared, he thinks that Harry escaped because he has some secret magical power or skill. And just so you know: the tongue flick is unique to the movie and it's a dead giveaway. That doesn't happen in the book.
@mentallygonereacts9 ай бұрын
WOW! This absolutely blew my mind, I never would have thought about it that way in terms of Voldemort being afraid of death while Harry isn't and that being what distinguishes them from one another and why Harry prevails. I wondered why it seemed that the killing curse is unavoidable and yet Harry somehow manages to overpower it. Now it makes sense why the ghosts of the old muggle man, Cedric and Harry's parents appear, since Voldemort used that spell on them! I'm not sure if there's any connection with that, but it's sill pretty interesting to think about. If it had stuck to the book without the tongue flick, it definitely would've been a bit harder to figure out. We're actually really excited to watch the rest of the films and read the books to learn more about the intricacies of everything. Which film/book is your favorite by the way? - Gabi
@ferencercseyravasz73019 ай бұрын
@@mentallygonereacts Good question. When it comes to the books I cannot possibly have a favorite as everything is so deeply interconnected that once you finished the series, you realize that comments, questions and phrases that were casually dropped in the earlier books were incredibly significant without you realizing that. From the movies I think my favorite is Prisoner of Azkaban. The wands interconnected because when twin wands are forced to do battle, they refuse. Instead they connect and try to overpower each other. The effect is called Priori Incantatem and in these rare cases it occurs spontaneously. But one can use that spell willingly too. Letțs say you stumble upon a wand and you want to see which were the last spells that it performed. Using your own wand you perform the Priori Incantatem spell on it and it'll have the same effect. Voldemort might have used the Avada kedavra spell correctly, but in order for any spell to take effect, there are conditions: mental strength and focus is one of them, also, sometimes special conditions can prevent a spell from taking effect. I won't say more about this just now. But for example when Moody (or really Barty Crouch Jr.) shows Avada kedavra in the classroom, he clearly says in the book, that the students wouldn't be able to perform it, they don't have what it takes. he actually says something like "You could all point your wands at me and say the spell, and nothing would happen", Incidentally, Avada kedavra is Aramaic for "let the thing be done". In the ancient Aramaic culture it was actually a healing spell and this is where Abracadabra comes from.

He said you won the tournament with all the clues because he made it that way. Igor Kargaroff bewitched it to select Viktor Krum to be his schools champion. Dumbledore said he put Harry in danger by allowing him to compete and then not canceling the tournament after Barty Crouch was found dead in the Forrest. The memory pensive was out because Dumbledore was trying to figure out what he was missing. That is why he told Harry every time he gets close it slips away. Once Harry said he was having dreams about Barry’s son, he realized it was really happening and didn’t want Harry to obsess over it and focus on it and you will understand more of that in the next movie. He needs Harry to live in the present and focus on his life and his friends and school and he s trying to protect him from any extra stress if possible

Be ready tho, from now it gets darker and darker and harder to hold back tears as well to be faire 🥲

I just love your review, your discussion after you watch these movies! So thoughtful and deep, got me thinking about so many details and layers and symbols of the story. I loved the parallel you made about Gandalf’s and Dark Lord’s resurrection. The Dark Lord’s being ‘undeserving’. So on point.
@bigg29889 ай бұрын
P. S.: Watched to the end. As expected, numerous inspiring insights. Without spoiling, you are very much unto something with the wands and their allegiance to the owner. AND the point about Dumbledore probably being in the know and planning everything - without being actually able to control it all and trusting it to play out - is actually scary! Do return to it as you, in due time, wrap up the whole series.

it should be noted the kidsactors are older than the Kid characters . Daniel Rupert and Emma are around 15 in this film that's where the confucian is probably coming from on y they look older . they needed the kids to be over 16 in later films to deal with relationship content because the age of consent is 16 in the UK cuz thats the legal age to leave home

Fun fact, the snake in movie 1 that Harry accidentally sets free at the zoo during his cousins bday trip is actually Nigini - the snake introduced as Voldemort’s snake. Confirmed and told by J.K. Rowling. She hoped people would notice that about the snake but because we never did she told us
@bighendy41627 ай бұрын
But nagini is female.. In the first movie, the snake had male voice

The fact you both recognized the tongue thing and subsequently figuring out that Crouch Jr. was disguising himself as Moody during the memory of the courtroom is highly impressive. Most of us missed it the 1st time around and most reactors also miss it. It's super obvious now of course but bravo to you!

The boys’ hair are longer because they were told not to cut their hair during the filming break. They were supposed to get hair cuts when they returned. It was decided to leave them long & the actors hated it.
@glowormrdr61839 ай бұрын
Actually, the director wasn't told the plan for haircuts, so he mistook the long hair for a current teenage thing. He wanted them to look authentic, so told them to leave the hair alone. Big misunderstanding!

Just found y’all on my recommended page & I’m so excited to dive into your journey of the hp series! I’ve watched so many reactions videos to the Harry Potter movies & y’all get so deep & truly understand the underlying themes & symbolisms & literary analogies & connect them to the real world which I absolutely love & wish more reactors did & this was so cool to listen to your discussion! The books are even more tragic & expose even deeper real world truths which is exactly what J.K. Rowling intended to do. The detail is immaculate in this franchise both books & movies & I can’t wait to watch your reactions to the rest of true series If you plan on reading the books let me know & I’ll refrain from explaining the gaps that were not in the movie but if you don’t I’ll def comment on any questions y’all have that the books explained. Don’t wanna spoil anything for you guys! Can’t wait for your reaction to part 5. Goblet is definitely the “coming of age” turning point in the series & you grow up with the characters as they start to grow into adulthood & become more politically aware of the world around them & the symbolism of life & death is so profound & well written.

Moody did bewitch Krum, that’s why he held back when he pointed his wand at Harry, because Harry was suppose to make it to the cup. Krum was used to eliminate the others.

I love how you figured out that it is Barty’s som doing polyjuice etc. in the books though you couldnt have figured it out before the reveal. And no much cant be included in the films for example there were creatures in the maze and puzzle riddles to solve which they dint or couldn’t put in the film. They have to condense so much read the books and you will see.

Dumbledore didn't know what was going on. He knew something was, and was trying hard to solve the mystery throughout the school year. He felt badly for putting Harry in danger by letting him compete. Dumbledore didn't suspect Moody until Moody/Barty Crouch Junior took Harry away from Dumbledore right after Cedric died. He knew the real Moody wouldn't have removed Harry from Dumbledore's protection in that moment.
@monio.94442 ай бұрын
Guys, Harry did grow up in that nasty family, but you have to remember that all he heard his whole life was how great and good his parents were and how much they loved him and how his mom gave his life for him. They were his candles in the dark, they guided him even without being physically present. So while he was abused by the muggle family, he had this ideal of "hey, i come from good parents who loved me, the world is good, there are good people in the world". Plus, Harry was protected by Minerva and Dumbledore for being an orphan. In the meantime for Draco, all he had was his nasty family, his narcissistic father, and i can imagine they talked a lot at home about how dreat the dark lord is. And because he did have a family, he didn't benefit from the same care from the professors, except for Snape, who was also similar to his parents. No wonder he was jealous of Harry.

First of all I'm so glad you took my advice and will be completing the series before doing other films and not leaving it so long between the movies so we get the continuity and continuous watch along. Secondly, I loved the reaction and how you both dive right into the characters and situations. The part at the end when Cedric dies and his dad screams 😱 always get me! Well done team ❤

Back to the merpeople theory Harry is seeing the world as it truly is no illusion, it’s rawest form. Beauty or anything that can be seen just at surface level can cloud a persons mind and make one not choose to look deeper metaphorically speaking. the temptation is greater than thinking about what is stripped away to reveal the bare bones of what it truly means to be our best self completely pure.

I subscribed to this channel after your first "Lord of The Rings" reaction. Your comments during the movie are so fun! But this channel's selling point is definitely the post-reaction discussions. So insightful, nuanced and intelligent. I think that once you're done with the "Harty Potte" series, you should definitely react to the Netflix series called "A Series of Unfortunate Events." It's the adaptation of a very unusual book series. ASOUE was to quirky introverts what "Harry Potter" was to everyone else! It would be so cool to hear your discussion styles for this weird universe that is so unlike typical children's literature... and to hear all your theories! "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is way too underrated and I think your style of reaction would be great for that show's style. Anyways, ~the world is quiet here...~

The movies never give you much of Tom Riddle Jr.'s (Voldemort's) background (we get a little in movie #6) but in the books, especially in "Goblet" and other books, we learn a lot. (NO SPOILERS) His father, Tom Riddle, Sr., was a muggle. His mother, Merope Gaunt, was a witch and a descendant of Salazar Slytherrin (which the in "Chamber" movie and book). Harry's mother, Lily, was a muggle and his father, James Potter, was a wizard and a descendant of a famous wizard which we learn about in a later book but never in the movies. This gives us another similarity between Harry and Tom -- with a twist: Both of Harry's parents died trying to protect him. We learn in one of the books that Tom's father rejected him and his mother, although dead, did not sacrifice her life for love of her son. This speaks to your comparison of Batman and Joker.

I just want to add a correction. Lily Potter was like Hermione, a muggle born (a witch but with muggle parents).
