Finally after several hunts and a lot testing I'm finally able to determine if the Minelab 15" search coil for the Equinox is really worth spending the extra money for it. I took this coil relic hunting, coin shooting, etc. and I'm ready to share what I like and don't like about this coil. I also did a complete review on all the Equinox search coils over on my website mentalmetaldetecting.com. the one thing I did not try was the beach. I believe this coil will do well at the beach but you tell me. What is your experience using the 15 inch search coil? Do you like it or not? Drop me a comment and let me know.

Hi guys, what do you think of the coil in surf , that being a 15 inch coil , even underwater ?.

I own all three coils for the Nox, but use the 15” the lease, simply because I reserve it for vast, open grassy areas. That said, I was pleasantly surprised in February 2020 to find two Mercury dimes one foot apart while using the 15”. The first was at 14” and the other at 12” deptH. I also found my first Barber quarter using it...1896 at 12”. I’ve dug a lot of other coins using the 15” but those three at those depths were pretty impressive to me. I must add that I’m a slow hunter, and in old parks with the 800 (I own a used 600 as a backup machine as well) I’m in Field 2, zero ground balance, iron bias zero, recovery speed 3-4 and sensitivity as high as I can get it without noise. I follow the advice of a KZbinr (don’t remember who it was because I’m 70 and have CRS🤪) who says “If you think you’re swinging slow enough, then slow down!" Trust me, it works! Great video. I enjoy watching and listening because you don’t babble...just say what needs to be said. I’m on my winter break for about three weeks in Cape Coral Florida, and will be trying the 15” on the beach. Like anywhere else, it’s not good in high density target areas, so I’ll have the 11” in my backpack if I need to switch them. Digbags.Etsy.com

Hey Scott, I just ordered my new EQX15 coil earlier today, it should be here in a few days. Which is fine because the weather here in the Detroit area is still cold with snow in the forecast, I'm not too worried about the weight because I use the Minelab Pro Swing 45 harness, that thing works great for me with my health issues and having to do things in moderation with not too much physical activity. Thanks for taking the time to do the leg work with this coil, it really helps guys like me that are only a couple years into metal detecting. Spring is coming!! Happy Hunting!!

I have the 15” coil and I love it. Literally started going to the gym to help with the extra weight but I’ve learned to move super slow with it. I mainly hunt the beach and yesterday I was digging 18” quarters and dimes by the dozens. I also went to a heavily hunted park and pulled a 3 ringer from about 18” as well. Give it a chance. I don’t touch the 11” anymore

4:25 Yes, this exactly happened me pretty often until i discovered what was happening! I was looking only at the front, but forgot that even the back has double coils in it (with 11 inches) and also are pointing active. Some items are beeping on the whole middle, some are detected just on front and back end tip. My worst enemy? Swarms of decayed wirings (those really thin ones) or metal waste, which is visible for hand detector and Nox. It sucks when you get over 20 cm deep and nothing. Fun times xD Yeah, I was thinking about "sniper" coil or bigger one, but I think I will stay with my current one. Thanks for demonstration!

You are a better man than me, I wouldn't have dug any of those signals except the quarter. I hunt square nail infested fields and cellars in New England, and I agree, all you need is the 11 incher, its ideal all around. I owned the 15 and 6, they both got sold on ebay after awhile. Yes, repeatable signal all the way around and you are good to go once you get a feel for your area. Rivets, bent square nails, stuff like that will fool you once in awhile, but nothing you can do about that. Good vid man.

Just an FYI minelab showed a trick on how to get more accurate pinpointing and it works unbelievably well. Instead of sweeping over your target then going to the side and then initiating pinpoint. Sweep over the target and instead stop on the target and initiate pinpoint. You will notice it is incredibly more accurate and sensitive. Hope this helps.

I have all 3 coils and after you buy another machine you have to buy more coils for that machine lol. If i upgrade a new machine i probably will buy the small coil as it can get between the iron and in those small areas that has lots of iron . Then that coil would be perfect and its makes recovering the target a lot quicker. i found a old sterling silver florin with the 6 inch coil in a place that has been already detected. also I found a very worn sterling silver threepence on top of a big rusty bolt.

Just a hunch, try a garden test using single freq, (eg: 4KHz), with both the 11" & 15" coils at a slow recovery/swing speed. Question: How does the NOX800 "learn" there is a different coil on the shaft? Is there an electronic ID?

I don't have one as of yet but I do intend to buy one. One field we hunt a friend of mine dug about 40+ CW bullets at about 16 to 17" using a Nautilus with a large coil! I know the Nox won't compete with that but I want to give it a try!

I wonder if the wiggle method would work better than the pinpoint function on this coil. Just keep wiggling and draw it back till the tone stops and your target is right in front of the coil. I personally think I'll get the 6". I wouldn't kick the 15 out if bed but I think I'd have more use for the 6 and 11.
@MentalMetal

I have given this a try several times and I've had better luck on coins but its a little more difficult. The sweet spot seems to be hard to find on this coil. I just end up digging a bigger plug and that seems to get me better results.

On another video on the 15 coil for the Equinox a guy suggested using single tone as he thought it would give an extra 3 " of depth when searching . Certainly worth a try !? Has anyone got any thoughts on that ??
@MentalMetal
@MentalMetal 3 жыл бұрын
I will have to give that a try but IMO if you have to go back to a single freq then that defeats the whole idea of using multi-freq which is what the Equinox is made for but trying out a single freq is worth trying. Thanks for the tip.
