The government will look the other way and ignore you unless you do something ELSE that they dislike, such as being on the "wrong" side of a debate/issue. I used to work at the secret service and in the late 90's they brought in the guy who created pgp to ask him if he would put in a backdoor for them. He got up, didn't say a word, and just left. It sounds good in theory but as your Google story points out client-side scanning illustrates one of several problems. Another is this legislation is a clever attempt to circumvent the constitution. Client-side scanning could be considered a "warrantless search and seizure" of your private communications, photos etc. without your legal permission or knowledge. In this egregious case seizure of medical records (baby rash photo) in violation of HIPPA and other laws. No one should be subject to any of this without their complete understanding and express written permission, furthermore any "accidents" like this that arise whether legal, medical and other fees must be paid by the scanner.
