@@electromechanicalstuff2602 I also have a old school 10kw that was upgraded to a 12kw. When I say old school I mean it has the hecules flathead four cylinder in it. Built in the 60's. Runs like a top but drinks the gas like a fish drinks water. It only has like a 1000 hours on it. I'd have to go look at all the numbers to tell you what it is exactly. I've owned it for a few years. Got one of these.. MEP-802A awesome generator.. One thing that is stated on one of the tags is "EMP Proof"!! Not one piece of electronics on this puppy, no ignition, Relay logic!! Most all military is Diesel for common fuel, no ignition, EMP resistance. I tested mine at 7KW, not recommended, but took it without Any complaints. Surge capacity is greatly underrated. Military Grade! Found mine for $2K w/200 hours and fully serviced from a guy in Pennsylvania who was flipping surplus Military generators. There are commercial diesel generators, some run at 3600 RPM which IMO defeats the reason for going diesel where 1800 is much closer to diesel max torque/efficiency. Sound deadening in the rain proof enclosure is darned good. Standard Service items (filters mostly) are available commercially. My goal is to use this generator for intermittent battery charging in an inverter system. Solar power isn't that reliable here in Maryland with often overcast skies. Running a generator with a light load is where fuel efficiency is lost. My full use electrical requirement is about 1 MWH per month which equates to an average load of ~1.4KW. Running this generator at about 25% duty cycle w/a battery sourced split phase inverter system capable of ~12KW peak will reasonably run everything I have without any concern. The default power source should always be Grid power which is currently by far the cheapest power source.
@electromechanicalstuff26023 жыл бұрын
I would target 50% load cause like u said fuel efficiency is lost on light loads. That generator will burn close to the same amount of fuel weather it's 25% load or 45% load. Secondly and most important these gens are kind of sensitive to wet stacking. If u only run low load most times at least once a month u need to run 100% for an hour minimum to make sure you burn off any unused fuel/carbon in the engine. If u ever see wetness anywhere on the exhaust put 100% load on right away or u risk washing out the cylinders. Lots of surplus generators are in the auction because of this reason. Many many are just fine. I've had over 20 units and only one was bad and that's cause the exhaust flap was left open and the engine had water in it. I now have a 803 and I plan on doing something very similar use generator during day for house loads and charge lithium batteries especially in winter when only the furnace is running at night then at night run on the lithium batteries. This way too during the day the generator will have a good heavy fuel efficient load.

@jimthvac1005 жыл бұрын
What makes these military diesels last longer than the cheaper one you showed is the fact that the engine it runs at 1800 RPM vs 3600 RPM of the smaller one. They make 3600 RPM diesels also and those will last a little longer than the gas versions but not alot more. The bearings and all moving parts of the higher speed engines wear out at a MUCH faster rate logarithmically.
@electromechanicalstuff26025 жыл бұрын
The speed is a huge factor, that is correct but also look at the robust components of a diesel vs a gaser. The piston rods are twice as heavy, the blocks are twice as thuck, the metalergy in general is usually of a higher standard to handle the higher compression ratios, cylider pressures and torque.

It does real good on my 3 ton 13 seer bryant AC unit. The only thing is you dont want much more then 2000 ish watts currently being used when it starts to keep the engine from boging down. So the days you know you'll be using it keep the toaster oven and every ceiling fan in the house on at the same time to a minimum. Myself to combat this i found a load manager from xantrax. Its called xantrex freedom sequence power manager. All your power runs through this first on its way to your panel. U can add some 15-20 amp 120v loads to it for shedding or what im going to do is utilize the built in low voltage relays to interupt the AC contactor signal wires. (The little wire going from your furnace to the outside AC unit). This way it will determin if theres too much load currently being used it wont start the AC unit or if the unit is on and someone starts the toaster oven and microwave and all the fridges kick on it will shit the unit off untill the generator can handle it again. All the treshoulds are programable and there's a few vids on KZbin about it. Even big natural gas whole house generators use this technique in the automatic transfer switch. I haven't done it yet but ill be going at it this summer.

But then everyone and their mother started bidding on them and driving the price for parts units that had missing parts past $4k not knowing what they were buying. Main thing to look for is the exhaust. If it has black oil or tar like substance on it the motor has wet stacked. Sometimes u can fix it with just 100% load for 8 hrs sometimes u can't. U must maintain 25-30% minimum load on it at all times to prevent wet stack. Otherwise the engine won't get hot enough to burn the diesel completely coats the cylinder walls and allows oil blow-by that just gums up everything. So when buying and not sure wether u want a 803/10kw or the 802/5kw know that u have that minimum load requirement 1500 watts vs 3,000 watts continuous load can be as simple as a one or two space heaters. @electromechanicalstuff26027 жыл бұрын
Mark B price is extremely variable. Depends on state the auction is in, How many are in the auction, how many hours on unit, wheather its a tier 2 rebuild or not, weather its running condition unknown or been tested, how many hours on unit, visual condition, has visable wetstacking on exhaust manifold or not, has good condition exhaust flapper or not, on a trailer or not. I usually go for around 1500 hours or less, no tier 2 reset tags, good visual condituon, no visable wetstacking, running condition unknown, good exhaust flap, with or without trailers, but newer Humvee style tires if i get a trailer. And anywhere from $1000-$2500 I'll spend and ive spend $2500 on ones with locked up motors on trailers

I keep it on 120/240 spit single phase. Only the mep-002a 5kw, mep-003a 10kw, mep-802a 5kw, mep-803a 10kw units have this ability. The 15kw units and up are 3 phase only. However sewrzuk has a video showing how u can rewire the mep-004a to 120/240 low zig zag with some easy mods to the reconnection board but the newer mep-804a are only 10 wire gen heads and cannot be reconfigured for single phase

I have an MEP-003A which is 10kw and air cooled. Bought this a backup to my Generac 20kw propane / natural gas primary unit. The Generac has an automatic transfer switch and will run my entire house including 2 central air units - 5 tons each. It will auto start and has circuits wired into house thermostats so it will start only one AC unit at a time. Runs the whole house with no problem. Bought the MEP in case of extended outages. Wouldn’t want to run the Generac more than 12 hours or so. The MEP will run for days at a time and will run the whole house with just one of the 5 ton AC’s running.

There is a 7000is(4 grand) that started a 4 ton. It wouldn't shock me if he turned off everything he could if it started the 2 ton as well. I've heard of these units putting out way more then rated. They are freaking pricey though. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2OkhHSNfNyloMU It'd be butter with a softstart kit(300 a pop just depends on your needs). Check out the new Westinghouse wpro8500 5% THD. I think even an inverter generator is typically in the 2-3% range and looking at that oscope just guessing it looks somewhere around what a 5% wave looks like too. 5% is supposedly some magic number. 9% works but is not ideal. Looks like the best consumer grade genset to come out in awhile. Looks like it's coming out of the same china house as generac. Not that that's awesome but generac seems to be at the top of the Chinese heaps along with champion. Nothing like this unit you have and I'm sure it'll bog down at the 11k surge. However it seems like the best your gonna get for around a 1100 new in box with a 3 year parts warranty from a big box store. Burns about half a gallon an hour at half load.

Actually, the horrible waveform of the garbage genset makes no differenceto any electronics manufactured since 1990. Every device uses a switching regulated DC power supply rated for ANY voltage from 80 to 300 volts at any frequency. The input you feed it is immediately rectified and charges a big capacitor to some dc voltage. The switcher's pulse width at a higher frequency varies to regulate the dc output voltage. It could care less what the genset waveform is,

@electromechanicalstuff2602 Жыл бұрын
Quality. Those NG/LP air cooled motors won't last 1/2 as long. They need oil changes over 200hrs this one is 500 hrs. At 400 hrs the NG Needs valve lashing this doesn't for 5000 hrs. NG 10kw has no surge rating. So don't expect to start a 3 ton ac unit with it. This has 300% starting surge. The NG is just an air cooled lawn mower engine this is an onan diesel made for industrial equipment. The NG is a slip ring exciter that adds distortion this is brushless exciter with grid quality sine wave. Because it's water cooled its way quieter. This service must be done by a certified generac tech to retain your warranty. I've seen these military units with 8,000 hours on them regularly. I have a friend who used to service the whole house units and the valve seats usually only last 2000 hrs and then the head needs to be changed. www.generac.com/service-support/faqs/maintenance-kit-faqs/what-maintenance-do-i-need-to-do-and-how-often

Other then I said commutator instead of slip rings . What else did I say that was BS? Diesel doesn't varnish like gas and does have a longer shelf life. As long as you keep water out of diesel it stays good a very long time. The THD on the Coleman can and will damage your sensitive electronics. Brushless generators are typically less noisy because of there very nature. There are more reasons for the better THD I can explain them better now if you'd like to know about them.
