I'm a 35-year veteran of the animation industry, currently at skydance. Discovered your work this morning. The first thing i saw was a process video. The art caught my eye, and i then watched some others on your channel...i was going to reach out to offer help with animation career until i saw the video about the portfolio day, you seem to be doing just fine on your own. Love your drawings! Great work!

Wow I wish I had something this helpful when applying for art school. I’m finishing my 2d animation senior year now at a different “well known” art and design school and boy it’s hard. I often look back and wish I had put more thought into my portfolio as I probably would have gotten into more schools. There just wasn’t much around on the internet back then besides people posting their accepted (or rejected) portfolios. Overall I feel like younger artists have so many more resources available and that makes me happy.

I applied to CalArts last year and was rejected. However, I may reapply again in a few years or for a MFA in Experimental Animation. I really wish this video existed when I was applying because I was very clueless while applying and I kept conflicting myself of what I wanted to put in my portfolio. Overall, I was not happy with my portfolio, but I've improved so much. since then. I hope to apply again when I feel ready.

What a great video!!! I took the PDW for Artist and Animators in 2021, had a wonderful experience, met a lot of fantastic artists online, and got accepted this year, and I couldn't agree more; CalArts Extended Studies is amazing :D Thanks for putting this together despite being in crunch time for your film! Good question!! It can vary from person to person, especially if people rapidly improve or if they remain consistent with their skill level. For me, my sketchbooks took 4 months but was mostly worked on in my final three weeks (Christmas Holidays) and my life drawings were a collection of works from the last year or so with one or two older pieces.

I'm curious what to do if you don't have access to nude models. I was going to apply to Calarts but I saw that requirement and no one in my area offers figure drawing classes (plus I was underage), so I ended up going to a different school and I've finally gotten some experience with models!

Awesome video Meppity, thank you so much for your enthusiasm and insight! As a high school student about to start the IBDP, would you say that academics matter when applying to animation schools and how did you manage art and schoolwork? I personally still want to maintain some academic balance, but I'm afraid it would interfere with the time needed to practice art ;w;

Hi!! Thank you for liking the video! Yeah, balancing art and academics can be a trick feat but it’s always nice to maintain a broad set of knowledge and worldly experiences as that kind of stuff can really positively inform your art. I did A Levels which were more narrowed down than IB so I had less subject to balance. I think what helped me was to ensure I did everything with purpose. For my final year of high school, all the art I did was specifically for CalArts or improving my skills to be ready to apply.

To be honest , I regret my college choice , I applied to a few art schools and got into most however the prestigious ones , artcenter , risd ….didn’t give my scholarships or financial aids as an international student , so I ended going to the school that gave me the most scholarship , the issue is I hate it here , the school is known for being overpriced and even though I have a scholarship as an international student anything is expensive for me so If I’m spending this much money I wish I was spending it on a school that gave me a better education, I hate the school so much that it even effects my drive to draw , I don’t even have inspiring classmates that I can get inspired by since the school pretty much accepts everyone but I’m 3 years in and idk what to do , all I can think about is “ I’m wasting my money I have to repay my parents one day “

Question, my Ap art theme was storytelling and world building. I had to do my process, character pages, drafting and so forth in a separate sketchbook, but I still occasionally make pieces for it and it’s a big story of mine. Should I glue my drafting sketches into my professional sketchbook? I know you said not to glue things in but it kinda feels important. Should I recreate these sketches and building instead?

I did all of the things I took the extended studies portfolio development classes I even did the summer residency program I did everything I was suppose to and still failed, even if you try your hardest and want it a lot and even if you never give up it doesn’t always means you will succeed this is what the world has taught me I got rejected so many times I lost count, I just don’t have the spark you really need the personality and be a certain type of person to be picked to attend this school. Either you have it or you don’t. It’s sad to admit and be realistic about when you know you ain’t got it like me. So I stoped trying to get in. Honestly trying to get in ruined my attitude destroyed my hope and gave me bad sketch book and drawing anxiety. I wish I was given the chance I think if cal arts gave me a chance to get out of my bad environment I could have become the kind of person this school loves to pick. If only o was given the chance to grow. I was looking for freedom in cal arts. I wish this school gave people the chance to grow and learn but to start you already have to be great, better than great even. You have to practically be a master. You can’t hold back. You need to express yourself and know who you are and the stories you wish to tell. Good luck to all those trying to get in since I could never figure it out.

Acceptance to the school is financially blind. If you’re skilled enough, you get accepted. All manner of people go here. The expense issue isn’t a CalArts problem though, it’s a U.S. higher education system problem. People sacrifice a lot to come here but for many, it’s worth the money. KZbin is free though - hence me trying to share my knowledge to those that can’t access these pricey schools.
