Agree, I wish they made this retail LOP Mer-Man light blue like the Classics DC vs MOTU reissue. Despite the differences this retail Mer-Man still seems too similar to the Power-Con LOP exclusive imo. Unlike the upcoming retail LOP Beastman who got a complete color change and does feel like a different figure from the Power-Con exclusive. Great video, tks Dan.

This version appears to be based on his appearance in the early minicomics (specifically the "Battle in the Clouds" story), and he is green in that issue, not blue.

I got the whole 5th wave here in the UK two weeks ago. Not sure why we got them before the US release but I was really happy with them. Faker looks awesome and I like the new Evil Lyn as well.

I'm definitley gonna pick this up! I think the proto-type Mer-Man looks a lot better than the final release. I can also tell the 2002 line took inspiration from this proto-type

*The card art is inaccurate.* Lords of Power Mer-Man was intended as a hero to start with. He was later switched to a villain when Teela and "The Sorceress" were combined into one figure in the MOTU toy line. Zodac was then added to the hero team, to even up the teams to 4 characters each. *Note also -* Stratos was considered a villain to start with. Stratos was later switched with Zodac, so Zodac became the "Evil Cosmic enforcer", except for in the DC comics and Filmation cartoon where he became a neutral, but that's another story.

This is false like really false parts are true but zodiac was made so late he wasn’t even in h Th w mini comics he was always a villain until DC because it was 4 on 4 He-Man Man at Arms Teela and Stratos vs Skeletor Beast man Merman and Zodac until DC where Zodac became a neutral enforcer he was also a enforcer they just changed what that meant when he became a hero

​@@johnokeefe4570 *Sadly you're misunderstanding what happened.* Yes, Zodac was invented after the original 1980 "Lords of Power" concept line. He missed out on appearing in the orignal 1981 Mini-comics because the creators of those were using only the original Lords of Power characters - He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Tee-La, Mer-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, Sorceress (Green lady) and Stratos. *But Zodac was created pretty early in 1981* , after the mini-comics had started being written. He was missing from the stories, but he was included in the cross-sells on the back of the second mini-comic....so that is pretty early. Originally The Sorceress was going to be an evil character but she and Mer-Man (originally a hero) were switched places. You only need to look at the original written material for Lords of Power to see Mer-Man listed as a hero etc. It is well known that the toys meant to represent Teela (or Tee-La as she was originally called) and The Sorceress were combined into one figure so we had Teela wearing the Sorceress' snake head dress etc. This meant that there was one less toy on the heroic side, leaving only three - *1) He-Man 2) Man-At-Arms, 3) Teela* vs. the four evil characters - *1) Skeletor, 2) Beast Man, 3) Mer-Man, 4) Stratos.* Zodac was created in time for the original "Masters of the Universe" sales pitch in 1981, so he could be the new fourth heroic character. He is listed "The cosmic enforcer". He was clearly intended to be a hero at this stage. In previous prototype scetches we see him described as acting "in a support roll to He-Man". On the very same page, we see Stratos listed as a villain. (Google the Battleramblog page on Zodac for all of this.) Obviously, we know that Stratos was later switched to be a hero in the mini-comics and in all the resulting media. *It was intended by Mattel that Zodac would switch places with Stratos to become an evil warror.* This is clear from the cardbacks where he is listed as an "Evil Cosmic Enforcer" (after the other characters were listed as either heroic or evil) and shown attacking He-Man etc. But none of this worked it's way into the DC comics nor the Filmation cartoon, where instead he was made a neutral character, above both good and evil. So Zodac started out as a hero....and became evil in the toyline material (as well as a few children's books), and neutral in the comics and cartoon. *Again - Google the Battleramblog page on Zodac for all this information.*

In my head canon, the original Mer-man sculpt is the true head, it displays a evil expression fitting an Evil Ocean Warlord. The big eyed version are ordinary civilian/soldier/minions, possibly mind controlled under Met-man’s powers.

I actually pre-ordered mine through Amazon, which I hardly ever do, and I got him a couple weeks ago kind of out of the blue, I was really excited! Mine also has the LOP sticker on the front, so now I just can't bring myself to take him out of the package. What I need now is one of those awesome clam-shell figure protectors and I can't find one anywhere for cheap! Arggg!

I can't decided on which Merman I want now. I really just want to get the figures that matched the original releases and not get into the weeds with all the new figures based on Mini Comics etc since some of those I already missed as I am just now getting into the line, but either way this is a nice figure.

If you are lucky you will receive one of these with a "LoP" sticker on the front of the figure packaging bubble. Some have it, many don't. Mine came from BBTS with the sticker :) Now we need a blue one with a filmation style head!

To my mind LOP Mer-Man has such a cute and derpy face sculpt that he doesn’t look like a villain. He looks like a comic relief character who teams up with our favorite Eternians to rescue his village from Mer-Man, a rogue member of said village. Perhaps 🤔 that’s why we got the figure we got as kids: someone at Mattel insisted on a more menacing sculpt. To be clear, I love LOP Mer-Man and am glad Mattel released this figure. I just can’t buy him as a Snake Mountain guy. That credulous dude Skeletor tricks into doing evil for five minutes before He-Man sorts him out to teach kids about stranger danger, sure, but a genuinely bad guy? Nope. Can’t see it. Too cute! I just got my LoP figure the other day and the skin tone is close enough to the original release that I don't notice a difference where as in this video I can see all 3 figures are very distinctly different, wonder if that's just me having bad eyes and your camera accentuating the difference, or something else.

What’s weird is that every place around me only has ever had wave 1 of the Origins figures. I found ONE figure each from wave 2 at a Walmart about 100 miles away, but never have seen any figures from any other wave since. It’s now July 2021.. if these are supposed to be in Target stores, then my local Targets have ignored waves 2-4. We’ll see if they even get this 5th wave..

The LOP stickered ones are way more common. I wouldn’t open one w/o the sticker. It was a factory error. At first the factory didn’t put the stickers on. This was corrected somewhat quickly. Hope this helps.

I have the body of this Mer Man with the armor and sword from the retail.... that is my "best Mer-Man" figure, the one in my main MOTU Origins display. The other Mer Man will go in a vehicle or on a beast or something.

Seeing this guy makes me a little mournful for Classics Mer Man. They tried to make him look like the card art version, but the parts library wasn't there to really commit to it. And there never was a toy-accurate version. He's neither fish nor fowl (no pun intended).
