This video shows how to remove and refurbish the exhaust from a 1983 Mercedes 107 280 SL. We removed the rust just using an electric drill and wire wheel. Ideally you would use a sandblaster which would be much quicker and more efficient.

That process was 'exhausting' to watch but turned out quite well. Over here we call those exhaust hangers 'donuts'. Some out there are metal reinforced inside but I use the original style with no issue on my 85' 380 SL

Very punny. Finally found a cheap 'sauce' of donuts in the UK via Eurocar parts. See to get through quite a few...probably due to exhausts not quite fitted centrally and rubbing on the rear valence. Mike

Thanks for your comment. So far the Eastwood exhaust spray has been great.. however this car is not a daily driver so I guess only time will tell. Mike

Another gem, Mike. Please keep posting on the 107 as I have one and want to do some stuff. I’ve got a rain leak in the footwells. Is it definitely the bulkhead you think? I’ve take the grilles off but can’t really see anything.... what do you suggest? Please

All of the old SL's I've seen have leaked in the front footwells (and the boot!). Usually it is the bulkhead and I guess the way to test this would be to take out the carpets and any underlay and poor a bucket of water on the windshield. If it was the bulk head you would see the water running down the footwell. If you park your car outside, it is worth investing in a waterproof cover. I am assuming you have seen the SL Shop video on this subject? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZawpHdmo9iXnrs

Thanks Mike for the reply. I’ve seen their video but they’re more interested in doing the job and don’t give a good insight like you do. But looking at their short video, seems I’ll have to take out the heater blower to get a proper inspection. Btw, I did pour some water and on the drivers side, although some water was trickling outside and under the front sill, there was some sleeping inside in the seam to the right of the accelerator- and that’s where a patch of rust has built up as well.

Hello Mike, I’m looking at getting a ‘79 450 SL. It will be my daily driver. Is this the worst decision of my life ? Haha let me know !

no - it is a great decision and will go some way to defining who you are. My first ever car was a 107 SL and I still drive it today. The main issue to look out for is body work rust - under the carpets in the front footwells, under the boot mat. Any paint bubbling by the sills/headlights or windscreen wipers probably indicate deeper problems.. Mechanically, I think my SL only ever left me stranded once when the fuel pump stopped working. Of course the pump started working as soon as the recovery truck turned up which was embarrassing....but it did start me on this KZbin path. Mike

You are not doing it right unless you get rust in your eyes

it's not original.. it's a bad after market one ... mine also rusts very heavy in comparison with the 30 year old original one

Thanks for your comment - I remember years ago fitting an original Merc exhaust to a 107 and complaining how heavy it was. I am in the process of changing the axle and pinion seals and need to get another torque wrench. How has the Proxxon perfirmed for you? Mike
