Mercedes 190 w201 Heater fan blower motor replacement

A common fault in a Mercedes 190 (W201 1982-1993) is for the cabin blower fan to break. Replacing it is a simple job and replacement parts are easy to come by. This video shows the removal of the old unit and replacement of an aftermarket Topran fan.

I know this was some years ago, but if you recall, maybe you can give me assist me?. (referencing a 1985 W201 190D) I have found 6 clips, 2 along the top and 2 on each side of the cover holding on the fan cover ,but I still have resistance in moving the cover. Are there others or another type of fastener working against me ? Thank you

Is there a way to find out which type of blower I need before I remove all the covers? I saw that there are 2 types - with a single wheel (like you showed in the video) and with a 'double-wheel'.

I know that the 2.6 ltr has a different blower to other engine sizes so that might be where you are seeing a variant. I used an ebay seller to make sure it was the correct fan before purchase.

@@martinhiel6260 Great stuff. The first comment I wrote out mentioned A/C but I did not really know so took it back out again. The video indeed shows a 1.8Ltr car with no A/C. Good luck!

@@garage90uk Yeah, saw it on some German websites where you can buy the blower. Single wheel = without a/c, double wheel = with a/c. Just replaced my blower today - removing the cover is really a pain in the ass! Actually, I didn't manage to get it out but turned it by 90 degrees so I could access the blower from the side. Thanks a lot, your video was great and helped a lot!

Hi what is the function of the part with metalic cover near the relay at 1.32 minutes . Does it control the functioning of the fan motor? Thank you

@@garage90uk now il can tell you . The piece with metalic cover is a thermal resistance . It controls the speed of the fan and in case of overheating the springs inside break.

NOT a simple job. Getting the fan out of a 1987 190D is a major aggravation. First the wiper unit needs to come out, which is not easy at all. So little clearance, it needs to be maneuvered around just right, and even then I had to bend metal tabs on the body out of the way. Then there are hidden clips on the fan cover. Mice found their way into the fan and made a nest, so this is really a mess. The engineers didn't have enough foresight to put in screens in the air inlets to keep rodents out. The engineers who design this stuff should work on their own nightmares BLINDFOLDED.
