Gary’s back in LA to finish up where he left off, trying to a get a 1958 Mercedes 190SL running again. With a new fuel tank, carburettors and more waiting for him it should be a straight forward job, but there’s no such thing as any easy restoration…

This is one of my favourite channels to watch on KZbin. No silly music and properly narrated. Keep up the great work Gary .👍🏼

Your channel has become most remarkable. The production values are off the charts and the best of this genre. Your background shines through in that aspect. “ A pair of gloves might help, dickhead” 😂 we make these comments in the shop 👍

Gary…good call on retaining the tank. If I could make a recommendation…when removing the old filler cap rubber, take some isopropyl alcohol and clean the paint, then apply a bit of carnuba wax, then install the new rubber…that way, you’ve got paint clean and protected underneath and you don’t have to wax around the rubber and leave residue

I feel and understand your frustration with the 190SL and give you much credit in not pouring gasoline on it and calling it a day. You take on projects that others would / could not, and again, much credit Gary.

Didn't know that about your parents sorry to hear that. Back in the 1980s all the cars we worked on as mechanics still had asbestos in the brakes and clutches and some of the mechanics i worked with would carelessly blow the brakes out with an airline causing a dust cloud in the workshop 😢

The key was only slightly benz. In the sun in the City of Angles, 5000 miles away from home with a car that's slowly falling apart, which one, the Mercedes 190SL, or the Jag XK8? Terrific stuff, I love it.

Nice going Gary. Just one thing, a dust mask will give little protection against the inhalation of asbestos. Please, use a half or full face respirator, utilising a P100, (coloured purple) cartridge.

Great episode again Gary! Boss location to be working on a car too! Why didn’t you challenge the re-manufacturer about the crack in the casing on the fuel pump? Dan needs to be buying the tools for you I hope!
@classic.obsession

Yes he’s buying the tools!! Be much easier and if make much better progress if I wasn’t driving all over the place sourcing stuff though. The parts place is great. Replaced the pump and allowed me to return the tank I didn’t use. Just a case of a bad supplier I suppose. It happens. It’ll make a lovely car. Regards.

It's unfortunate the tank didn't need replacing, however impossible to know without draining the fuel and still good to remove sedament. Just as replacing parts before they break.

@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession 7 ай бұрын
I gave him the option Michael but he decided that considering the magnitude of the work required coupled with the lack of time and no tools, that the best option was to buy new. Of course I could’ve rebuilt them but I think it was the right call. Regards.
