yes, really, in my country they are cheap for being Mercedes, but it's still better than many brand new cars like dacia/renault, mexican made nissans or brazilian volkswagen that lack of build quality or not even having esp or abs in 2018

Yes it did but after that they recalled all sold ones and modifed them with ESP etc. Safe car after those modifications. I still drive the 1999 version, great car. In a couple of months I have the newest version.

yes and the "elchtest" was named by stupid "BILD" Newspaper, it did have the name before as it was just a "evasion" test... Then they used a non-ready prototype with different rear axle but yet everone is stupid not to do some research. this little car is very efficient by fuel and loading, it is just not very fast!

I have an A160 Classic W168, very nice car, even being from 2001 it's better than many new 0km cars that are sold in my country (Renault Sandero, Fiat Palio, Vw Gol - not golf, the gol is a rebaded polo with lower quality) and altough its not sporty, it's very, very or too safe, once i was driving home and thanks to the abs and esp i avoided getting crashed by a drunk driver. i have no complains on it rather than not being so sporty, there shoud've been some petrol turbo version and manteinance of the engine is very difficult but it's not very necessary if you take care very well

@Potjiekossie how did it fail, yes it failed the elk test with 5 adults on snow tyres. many cars fail it on normal tyres with one person in but you don't really hear about those.

Ich habe eins von 1968 und es hat zwei Probleme. 1. Wann das Auto nimmt eine normale Kurve es wird sich bremsen. 2. Die servolenkung habe ich gehört, dass es nicht mehr funktioniert nicht nur in mein Mercedes sondern in den übrigen.

@EccentricRichard to an extent i agree with you but merc manual gearboxes seem notchy and imprecise most mercs sold are auto shift golden thumb rule they say if you go for a beemer pick manual box if you go for a merc pick auto

Najbardziej gówniane auto jakie naprawiałem. (Polish language) Rozrusznik wyjąć - trzeba wyjąć silnik ze skrzynią i z sankami aby się dostać. Pompę paliwa wyjąć - brak dekielka w podłodze i trzeba zdjąć ekrany pod autem i wyjąć zbiornik paliwa Ekrany pod autem - OTWIERAJĄ SIĘ JAK DRZWI POD KĄTEM 90 STOPNI czyli musisz auto musi być podniesione minimum na 110 cm inaczej nie zdejmiesz, tylko uchylisz ekrany. Wymiana żarówek w przednich lampach - trzeba opróżnić i wyjąć zbiornik płynu do spryskiwaczy Zamek tylnej klapy - zawsze nie zamyka klapy bo się zabrudza przy użytkowaniu (pisze jak szybko naprawić: podnieś klapę i nalej olej samochodowy do zamka i naciskaj kilkanaście razy, zostaw olej na 5 minut po czym opuść klapę i powycieraj, będzie się wylewał przez jakiś czas ale zamek będzie zamykał) Otwierany dach - instalacja śniedzieje i nie otwiera się dach Siłowniki w tylnych siedzeniach - nagminnie pękają Nadkola tylne plastikowe - przecierane przez nawet wymiarowe koła Listwy dolne drzwi - wystarczy lekko zahaczyć i odstają ... i wiele innych ale szkoda słów. PODSUMOWANIE: Największe gówno jakim jeździłem (porównywalne do Fordów).

A faulty design. If it turns over in an evasive manoeuvre without ESP, simply a faulty design and nothing else. Would have needed two years more of construction refinement. Quite practicle in city traffic, though. But the sandwich bottom design makes it a pain in the ass to repair. Don't buy an older one!

JackpodyDK Sorry, but you are implying something I didn't say. The logic of my argument doesn't apply universally. The W168 is just an ordinary compact car and not as advanced and specialised as the B2 is compared to other plains. The functional requirements of the A class do thus not justify to compromise on its active safety, so the analogy with the B2 bomber is not valid. If an ordinary Airbus A320 required as much IT as a B2 bomber and such specialised pilots in order not to fall out of the Sky, it would be a faulty design, too. The chassis of a normal car should never reach the critical frequency in manoeuvres occuring in every-day life. ESP should be a supplement to an excellent chassis tuning, not a cover-up for engineering mistakes.
