Your information is a Goldmine to me as I've just bought a 1996 320 SL. I haven't seen all your programs yet, but I will. I have four problems. 1. The sound in (mostly the passenger door, is like the radio hasn't really found the station only it sound the same if using other media. Speakers, amplifier (s) or what? 2. It was originally bought in US (now driving in Sweden) and it is in wonderful condition (no rust whatsoever) but I don't like Mph and F. How difficult is it to find Kmh/C' and replace? 3. What lubricant should I use for the Cab mechanism? 4. The automatic antenna. It doesn't go up but engine is running. What to do? Many many thanks in advance, Claes from Gothenburg/Sweden

Hi Claes, welcome to the R129 world! The 1996 320SL is a great choice for the Swedish climate. Great engine and post-facelift design. 1. The passenger side speaker problem has a few culprits - start by checking for loose or corroded connections at the speaker or at the head unit. There's also a chance the speaker could be water damaged from the previous owner, having kept the window open during rain. 2. I don't know this well. My suggestion is to live with it for now. There are companies that sell speedometer stickers in kph or mph. Certainly, getting a km spec instrument cluster would work, but you'll lose the history. 3. Do you mean the cabriolet mechanism? Silicone grease would work at the bending joints. 4. The antenna malfunction is a common problem. You'll need to replace the antenna motor mechanism. It's a DIY job, but you'll need to source a new or used or aftermarket mechanism. For items 1 (speaker) and 4 (antenna), replace and/or check their fuses first. Keep me updated. I'm excited for you.

Thank again champ!! Excellent video Never knew about the half way engine oil to prevent headgasket. My head-gasket is leaky! Any chance of how to replace the head-gasket then?😏
@HandyVal3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the great feedback! Changing the head gasket is a big job (emphasis on big). It requires disassembling the engine and removing everything around it and then putting it all back together. The engine also needs to be machined down (at a machine shop) so the new gaskets have a good, clean and straight area to stick to. The MB gaskets are relatively cheap at a few hundred dollars but the job requires about 10-12 mechanic hours! The good news is that today’s seals are much much better than the original, and so you may hopefully get a lifetime out of them with proper engine care. I hope this helps, and let’s keep these cars going forever.

Hey - 😀 A few others have told me the same thing! I really enjoyed watching Steve Job’s video when he introduced the iPhone to the world. It’s a video from 2007 and you can find it on KZbin. Thank you.

Hey Mate, how often do you change the gear oil? Should I do it if it never been changed on my r129? Thanks
@HandyVal3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up. You mean the rear differential oil? The recommendation is that it needs to be changed every 30,000 miles/50,000 km. This maintenance is commonly overlooked. It’s a good idea to change it.

Silly question. What about water?
@HandyVal2 жыл бұрын
There’s never a silly question. The term water and engine coolant mean the same thing. For example, the water pump is really an engine coolant pump. Many years ago only water was used as engine coolant and so the term stuck around for a long time. I hope this helps.
