( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC is a powerful AWD German sedan that wraps you in a cocoon of luxury. At just over $128K this top of the line Mercedes Sedan is neither inexpensive or slow as Roman found out in the TFLcar on road review.

Taking the point off a car because it has too much technology? Technology is one of the reasons why people buy the S Class alongside it stateliness, poise and prestige.

My W221 S550 flat out the best car I have ever driven. It is not the fastest, or the most sporty or the most fuel efficient but overall it gives me a powerful sense of comfort, safety and well being. My last generation S class does 0-60 in the low fives, trip mpg of 25 and 21 overall, rides like a dream but can corner without falling over (or off the road.) The only car I can imagine to replace it is a W222 S550. Just have to wait for one to come off lease- low mileage, Certified Pre Owned with the big depreciation hit having already been paid for by the lessee.

If you buy a luxury vehicle when it comes off lease as a CPO you can get a lot more car for the same price you would pay for a new near-luxury car. The lessee pays for the big depreciation hit and you get the car for a reasonable price.

Never buy new!! Let the first owner eat that big depreciation hit, buy it second hand, hold that value, and enjoy it, amazing car till today compared to the s560, best luxury sedan out.

Also this is an aspirational car many (older guys like myself) want to own. Should mention its also less likely you'll die in a catastrophic crash while ensconced in one of these. As to the shifter stalk they make a lot of sense by freeing up space in the center for further car control and cup holders and I find myself frequently reaching for one when starting my wife's silverado. German MB staff of yesteryear said of an older S class design "you should not eat or drink in this car" and the cup holder subsequently evolved in large part due to American culture. The lore around the star hood ornament and wreath/laurel is that every S class has had one (they don't rest on their laurels) as best seen in the star and laurel commercial and evokes emotion in a way only Mercedes can here:kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZS9qq15gqiJjcU

Guys! This car is about the tech and comfort! What about talking about semi-autonomous features like Stop&go Pilot? Which literally makes the car drive itself. Or how about Distronic Plus with Steer assist? That, again, allows the vehicle to drive itself but regulators still don't allow it. Or what about Magic Body Control? Which uses cameras to see the road ahead and prep the suspension for that "wafting along" feeling you were just talking about. Or what about the self parking features? Or Attention Assist which knows if you're tired and asks you to take a break? Or Intelligent Lighting with adaptive High Beam assist that literally bends the light around other oncoming drivers? Yes, yes this is about the power.... But this review should have been 20% about the engine and 80% about all the tech. I get so annoyed when I'm in traffic and I see some old fart driving a brand new S Class without using all the tech it comes with and it was designed around of.

Ah well, as I'm still on my own, I may as well get cracking while it's peaceful. This MB is how one should build a luxury performance saloon. Everything about it is balanced. The performance can be enjoyed because it has a chassis and drive system which can cope with the power; unlike other obvious examples whose ridiculous power completely overwhelms their primitive chassis. This idea of balance is why Europe can sell their cars in the USA, but the USA, by and large, can't sell their cars in Europe. Of course, Europe also cheats on exhaust emissions, which helps, but, hey, nobody's perfect.

+MrKeyboardCommando You're so goddamn arrogant. European cars sell well in the US because American car buyers are open-minded, have wide ranging tastes and have enough cash to spend on such costly cars. North American cars fail in Europe because they're primarily NA market-specific, which gives them tremendous disadvantaged outside of the US and Canada for many reasons, and this is on top of the slanted, stuck-up nature of the European market. Just think about that for a second... It's not just European luxury cars that do well in the US, Asian luxury cars also do well here, sometimes even better than European luxury brands. But non-market-specific cars made by Japanese or South Korean brands don't do nearly as well in Europe as they do in the US, much like cars made by American companies have trouble selling NA market cars in Europe. Again, this is because of the slant and snobbishness of European buyers. They won't even consider anything but a European luxury car. With that said, when it comes to cars that are not-so-image critical, American automakers actually do understand European buyers better than either the Germans or the British understand US buyers. Americans know what Europeans want, they want cars built with them in mind primarily, which is why some of the best selling cars in the EU are made by American companies. But try to get the Germans to build cars made primarily for the US market, and we end up with shit like the Passat TDI, a cheap, boring barge that can't even pass our emissions tests.

C class cheapens the hell out of this car. every time I see an s class I think it's an economy c class which you don't want if you are dropping 100g's on this car. interior is nice but still has some cheap plastic inside. New 7 series is the one to go for in this class

Not true. My S550 sits beside a CLK55 AMG and a C300 4Matic. All are bullitt-proof. Wearable parts last longer than all others. Beat the system by using non-dealer MB experts for routine maintenance (30 cents on the $ vs. factory dealers). This is how the Big Boys play it -- we don't sweat it at all cause we've been there rookie.

Pragmatism and reality are bad words in a corporate world. When billions of dollars are at stake, pioneering automobile car companies would strategize in ways where people would start believing half truths as gospel truths. Mercedes Benz S class is an excellent car , there is no question about it, but it also can not escape the fact that it is over priced. Other German competitors offer same / similar technology for less BMW and Audi in that order ( Audi is the most inexpensive of them all ) without compromising on the prestige of a brand name. Asian competition offer MORE for way less price, with varying levels of prestige attached to them. If one is super rich and have money to throw around, then it is no brainer to get the car with highest (perceived) prestige but for most others who want best bang for their buck with no compromise on the feature and technology content, there are others available , both German and Asian. IMHO, (no personal abuse please)

+melmelcorvette I think you are missing Hi-Fi insider's point. The Mercedes can only drive itself to a limited point. Like keeping itself in a lane or auto cruise control and braking and self parking. It can not be programmed to lets say drive 350 miles on its own, they are not capable of that yet. The better question is why would you want that in the first place? Self driving cars sounds like the seventh layer of hell to me. But im a car and driving enthusiast so you may disagree.
@JonesNanaz
@JonesNanaz 8 жыл бұрын
+melmelcorvette This car actually can drive itself, there are videos that shows this car drove a 350miles route. however due to legal issues with autonomous car, they cant claim it, and they cant let it drive by itself. but as soon as legal issues are solved, I think they will release the fully autonomous version
