Mercedes C200 kompressor cold start

I have a C180 sport kompressor with 33,000 miles. Sounds identical to mine when cold. Fine when hot or when used daily.

Yes mine is the same also - w204 c200k with 108k km. I was worried too about this noisy start up - I'm glad it seems to be normal.

Mine is the same w204 c200k with 134k km. It males some noise like low steering wheel fluod and the sound is gone after 1 minutes. Only happens after some hours after running of the engine!

I'm pretty sure it's normal, my one is the same when cold starting I got told it's the catalytic converter warming up,

No, it's not normal. I changed chains, guides, tensioner and no change. The only thing I haven't replaced is the camshaft dephasors/gears and I'm afraid it's one of them.

I found an issue, it was belt tensioner. I replaced it 5 month ago and it runs as new. I took around 10 years to determine what was the issue

@@xkondi00 Belt tensioner ????? sorry but it sounds ridiculous. There is no way this sound is coming from a BELT tensioner. I only had to replace the camshaft dephasors and we'll see.

@@besniqbesniq5021 yes the tensioner. The belt falled down and we found that the tensioner bearing was totalybdamaged. So the mb service repaced the bearing, belt and i feel Lit the car have 60hp more than before and no cnocking sound

Guys I have the same noise only at cold starts for 2 seconds.my mechanic told me it's normal cause the oil needs some seconds to build pressure.

exactly. First of all is building up the oil pressure. It is the first sound change and the second one is after warm up whole oil system so it is lowering idle speed to get to normal angle velocity. But: it is not good to leave the engine running just in idle mode. Much better is to accelerate gently during driving and not to be agresive with acceleration until temperature is on 90 degrees ...

This sound is absolutely normal during cold starts. The main noisy sound comes from secondary air injection system, which heats catalytic coverter during cold start and when secondary air injection system egr valve is open, the small amount of air comes from these eaton superchargers and while that valve is opened, you hear that supercharger sound more aggresively. When the catalytic converter is heated enough, that valve closes and you no more hear that supercharger whine. Overtime that noisy sounds increase, because catalytic coverters and egr valve became more clogged, so that valve opens more at cold starts and generates more supercharger whine sounds. Also, overtime supercharger bypass valve begin to werknmore aggresively due carbon build up, to compensate loss of power.... The secondary air injection system fully closes, when engine reach 60C temp. The only way to reduce these sounds is to uninstall secondary air injection system or clean system. But these canr be completely eliminated, because car runs at 1500 rpm at cold start and supercharger bypass valve works more agressively, to allow and control more air income to the intake and enter those second air injection system channels.

@@GfrigoP most important thing on this car is checking timing chain if you planning to buy or bought it few weeks or months ago. It lasts only about 100k miles. Good fully synthetic oil is in must for these cars and oil changing every 6k miles. Also oil consumption for this cars is crazy. Need to check every 3k miles and refill a bit. Mine car from max oil level range to lowest point mark always went in 3-4k miles.... If you have these car and never changed supercharger oil, this must be changed also to avoid future damage. Supercharger bearings needs to be changed also. Everything another things looks fine. To restore power of these cars you can change intercooler and clean intake valves. These two clogging very fast for m271 engines even you using premium fuel or oils.

Here in Brazil I use 5w40 full synth with 229.5. I will start check the oil!

@@GfrigoP yeah, you need check oil consumption ocassionally. Surprisingly these cars wont throw any notice about low level of oil, only when it went down far from lowest recommended level point mark and that thing is not recommended for waiting and bad for car. I also not mentioned about spark plugs. For these cars it need to be changed every 40k-50k miles. And check valve cover gasket if it not leaking. If it leaks, you will see a lot oil in spurk plug hole.

Sound is normal for m271 the engine !!! Fault lies with the structure of the chain tensioner.

I have 170k km. noise is the same. Guys form service told me is is normal for all compressor engine.

​@@akafede4351 Hi! Have same car W203 M271 Kompressor 1.8 Same noizy start with some grindy noises, then 1,5-2 sec. they gone, ebngine starts to run smooth but still have this knocking. When drive 5-10km, engine temrature raises to 85-90C and all noises stops. When you park and start it again with hot engine - no noises at all. My mechanic says that the problem is hydraulic lifters on cold start has low oil and when engine becomes hot, they stop knocking. Sorry for my bad english :D My way - 237 000 km, have problev with engine temperature sensor. Go to mechanic tomorrow, scared =(

Mine does that too, i will change my castrol 5w40 magnatec to liqui moly oil 5w40, but she is making this sound only when is cold, i guess that the oil recheches harder when is cold because i tryied something, i turn off the engine added a small amount of oil in it, started again, the same cold engine and she was more quieter

Its due secondary air injection systems. At cold starts its activating, egr valve opens,keeps 1500 rpm to allow some air come from supercharger to faster heat up catalytic converter. Also, supercharger bypass valve plate allow more then usual air to income at cold starts at same rpm. All you hear is supercharger whine. When catalytic converter heats up enough, egr valve closes and bypass valve normalize air income, you no more are loudy at idle :)

I have changed 2 of elektromagnets od timing chain and cleaned up connectors cause oil was inside and sound gone..

The guys explaining that these are sounds from the supercharger, this is easily verified by starting the car without a belt of the supercharger. It will be understood whether this sound is from him or not.

Hy guis, found what the problem is? I have a w204,2009,138k km that sounds the same. I was at the service, and at first they told me that the timming chain has to be changed...after they inspected with the serpent belt off they told me that is the kompressor. That is bad and i have to change it. What did you change in your cars, did you change something or just left it as it is? Thank you. Have a nice day
