Mercedes CLE 220d will do over 1200km without recharging so why bother with EVs?

I know there's a shift on for the EV people out there but while we are waiting for the actual cars to arrive there is nothing wrong with a diesel engine that I can see, they emit mostly water these days right?

I don't need a car that can do 1200km between refuelling stops, who does realistically? If I can drive from my home in the South West England to say Wasdale in Cumbria on a single charge, I would be more than happy with that. That's a 453Km trip and more than enough driving for one day thanks.

This goes back to one of your best vids that describes the charging issue. You were driving an Audi Q5 diesel if I remember correctly. It’s not about the money but about the time you have to spend. We’re all so time dependent these days and the last thing you need is to spend more than 30 mins while having a social engineering contest with other people restlessly waiting to get a spot. Nah, I’m grand thanks.

I find it strange when people say that they stopped for a quick charge in places when I'm already at the final destination without stopping!

I have spent less time waiting on my EV to charge over the last 7 years than I did filling my ICE with Diesel, the previous 10 years. My car is currently sitting full with a 400km range waiting on me to drive it. I only ever charge publicly on long journeys which I do at my leisure and drove to London last year without any issue. Later this year, I will be driving to Switzerland in it. The big problem is lack of research. EV's won't suit everyone, but they will absolutely suit the average driver, which studies show commutes less than 300km per week and parks their car in a driveway. A diesel car wouldn't suit me at all and won't suit many others. Independent research is key and you won't find that when you are just looking at one side of the story.

@@craiglawlor2749 Oh yeah for sure and I’m not your narrow minded ev hater. I will say though that I really disagree with the current trend in giant suvs that try and fit as much batteries in to combat the range. Like the Volvo EX90 that Bob showed off a few days ago…that thing really tilts me because of the price and the overall mindset when it comes to properly implementing EVs. It’s great that you only charge yours on public roads when you take a leisurely long trip. This entire topic is very situational. There are people who have never experienced the frustration of EVs because for example, they have their Honda E that they ONLY use around town and ONLY charge it at home. Then they just use public transport for long journeys or have an ice or hybrid car for longer trips. Again, it’s situational. However, I think and I may be wrong, that most people would like to have that comfort that they can quickly charge wherever they can on the public roads without any of the awful experiences you can have these days even IF that scenario happens very rarely. Your case is very specific with regard to your first sentence. I completely agree that independent research is vital though. I’m really not a fan of typing essays because topics like these have to be discussed verbally so I’ll finish with this. “It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale” - Iroh from ATLA

@@miklos1298 agree with a lot of what you say and agree that my situation is somewhat situational but the average driver in Ireland drives less than 300km per week and parks in a driveway, so in theory my situation is the average situation. If I was driving a taxi or travelled the country for my job, I would have to think twice based on other people's experience of regularly public charging but that is also situational. Research really is key and the diesel engine will remain for some time, especially in the commercial space. I think we are on the same page with a lot of this and I agree, that EX90 is a silly car at a silly price.

I think people who drive for fun or rather the times people drive for fun are getting fewer and fewer. People drive for work and tbh it's a chore most of the time. Hence, the emphasis on 'infotainment' rather than the experience of moving at speed.

Great review Bob and nice to see unbiased as ever. You talk a lot of sense. I'm right in the sweet spot for a PHEV at 28 mile total commute but needing the ICE for the odd long range trip. Last year I got 800 MILES from 37 litres of petrol which is a tankful in my car (1330km?). Obvs that's a lot of small journeys with some longer ones. My battery is only man enough for about 17 miles. I'm still very happy with that. 0-60 in 6 seconds and rwd fun is a bonus considering I'm saving £280 a month not running my thirsty old S3

Yes thank you Bob! A proper review of a real car with an ICE! Not a bad looking Merc either all the same. I just don't understand why people with electric cars are so passionate and feel the need to let everyone know why they bought their electric car! It's like anything else, if you have to explain why you drive what you drive you're already losing 🤣 that Swift you did a video on was literally a breath of fresh air. Small car loads of fun plenty of gear changes! Keep up the vids and never change ❤

Regarding Tesla , they give you everything you need included in the price (including heated seats (cooling in the front) heated steering wheel, if you want to, you can pay 3800 euro for enhanced Autopilot, no need in Ireland as the standard autopilot comes with the car is all you need, and 7500 euro for Full Self Driving , total waste of money no need. there is a subscription of 9.99 a month for Spotify/live traffic in maps on the screen etc, that is probably worth getting, especially if on a summer road trip etc. all the above for 43K approx, nearly half the price of that merc, yes not in the same car bracket i know. as long as you have a supercharger on your route i think its about one of the only EVs that could compete with a long mileage cruising diesel. ( yes i know its depends where the chargers are) and not worry too much about range anxiety on this island

Nonsense. 265,000km driving EV's and the two batteries are fine. If the battery isn't fine, it's under full warranty for 8 years unlike that Merc that will cost a fortune to maintain out of their short warranty. I had a Diesel Merc ML, they are a pain out of warranty. My Dad ended up with court with the dealer over them voiding his warranty on an E-Class diesel with a Chrysler engine.

Why bother with EV? Let's see, I save €220 a month on fuel, and my car doesn't pump out cancer causing fumes through the tailgate - and yes before any of the knuckle draggers start I am fully aware driving an EV is not zero emissions, but the reduction is approx 75% . And if you think the emissions from mining the materials is bad, then I suggest you step away from your laptop and mobile phones.

Question is: How much is the cost per kilometer over the whole lifecycle. You can fix a Merc Diesel with 160'000 Kilometers... Battery replacement - that is another story. I do not believe in EVs with the current battery tech... Once we have cheaper and more sustainable batteries that will change.
@craiglawlor2749
@craiglawlor2749 3 ай бұрын
@@Fuchs85DEin my 7 years driving 2 EVs and 10 years of driving various ICE cars, I could have bought a new battery for my Nissan Leaf in savings, but I didn't need to, as the Leaf had 83% battery capacity after 210,000km. My current EV has practically full battery capacity after 55,000km. In 7 years, I have replaced wipers blades, break pads and just recently had a warranty repair on my suspension. I spent just under 10k in maintenance in my 10 years driving ICE cars and ironically, most of that was to get my BMW 520 to produce less emissions. Best decision I have ever made moving away from Diesel

I used to think this before we started paying as much for electricity as we do to run a typical small engined petrol or a good diesel. Not worth it unless you invest in retrofitting your house with solar to claw some of it back. I'm avoiding until I've no choice
@elon803
@elon803 3 ай бұрын
And the emissions from the electricity that the car gets charged from. I have a phev and the electric power train is great around town. Unfortunately, factors such as range and that I have to leave an apartment at 7am on a Sunday morning to charge it have helped my decision to go back to diesel. Electric can be great but i feel that a considerable amount of cars are being sold to the wrong customers at the moment (so much for installation of chargers in apartments by management company's)

@@mlann2333 do you not have a night rate? I charge my car between 2-4 am every night for 11c per kWh. You won't find diesel at half that price equivalent. I have also just had solar installed for a net cost of 5200 on a 30 year old house. That will mean I won't need to use my night rate electricity for 6-8 months a year.
