Thank you for this video BTW, very interesting! 2 things I know that my car won’t do is automatic take over and read the speed limit signs. However, it will be able to show the speed limits on the dashboard.

Do you use the automatic overtake feature a lot? What do you like and don’t like so much about the drive pilot? What are your experiences so far?

While cruising I do use the overtake feature. At higher speeds I usually steer on my own. The drive pilot is a good system, I like it overall very much. There are some occasions where it does not work so good. I have a few videos on it. Braking could happen a bit earlier... even at level 4 (farthest away from car in front) it brakes too late to be „natural“.

Yeah, exciting times ahead:)! I will also start uploading more videos once I am allowed to travel again. There are quiet a few tests open which I did with the Passat B8. Which was also a great car. Overall the e class is of course better.

Very interesting ... it seems pretty close to Tesla AP. Does Daimler provide OTA updates or how is that managed? Is their self-driving tech native or from another company eg MobilEye?

I am not sure if the self driving capability is updated OTA. There is a permanent SIM card which is also used for Mercedes Me, SOS calls etc. What I can see in the system is updates for the navigation maps. Other stuff might get updates behind the scenes. I.e. I was pretty sure that there wasn’t a Sport+ mode when I got the car. But then later on I was able to select it when configuring the individual drive mode. I might be wrong but I think this was added OTA. The self-driving tech is native Mercedes I think... It‘s been already years since the first S class was driving completely autonomously from one city to another.

Another Q: DP relies on vision + radar (no LiDAR), like AP ... so if in DP mode you're cruising on flat straight motorway in perfect daylight conditions at 100kph (with target speed set to 125kph) behind a lead car which suddenly cuts out to reveal a stationary traffic jam 130m ahead, how does your car react? In Aug 2018 I had this exact scenario occur with AP HW2.5 and the car by itself accelerated towards the set speed & stationary traffic as if it were not there at all, without even a warning tone. (AP would have ploughed into it with undiminished speed had I not jumped on the anchors at last moment and stopped with little margin) There have been many sw (+1 hw, to HW3) updates since then and, though the system has in general greatly improved, I have as yet seen no evidence this most treacherous problem is cured; certainly I would not trust it to stop. In the meantime Tesla are finishing up a comprehensive rewrite of the whole AP/FSD system to "see in 3D", to hopefully bring some major safety/performance improvements OTA by EoY.

That’s crazy! I need to test this because I did not have this situation so far. But based on my experience with the drive pilot it will absolutely brake and bring you to a safe stop. DP is very quick when it comes to braking.

@@nerdrides Yes, the cut-out into stationary jam scenario is extremely treacherous, as it happens so infrequently and one tends to get lulled into a false sense of security because AP normally reacts very well in the usual flow of traffic. It is a well known weakness of doppler radar that when at high speed it cannot distinguish large stationary objects in the planned path from roadside furniture, therefore these returns are simply filtered out and ignored: www.wired.com/story/tesla-autopilot-why-crash-radar/ So please be very careful when testing! Maybe also consult with user manual for info as to DP exact capabilities in this scenario, or ask MB themselves. In any case over-reliance on the AP tech has cost some half-dozen Tesla drivers their lives so far, so I just wanted to warn/ask you about this.

Hi, I have ordered the Full Drive Assistance Plus package in combination with the standard SD Card Navigation, but with the 360° camera option. I was wondering what kind of AutoPilot features I will be missing since I did not select the COMAND Online option. Reason is that I mainly use Waze for navigation with Apple CarPlay.

Hi! As far as I see there should be no direct dependency on the command online. The drivepilot mainly uses the radar system and the front cameras behind the wind shield. It brakes actively in sharper curves and before entering a city but that should also work with the normal navigation data from SD. At least I don’t see a reason why it should not.

Let’s hope you’re right on this one but I won’t have the “Active Speed Limit Assist” for sure and I am not sure if the “Route-based speed adjustment:” will work with the SD Card navigation system? I should receive my new car around 15 April and will definitely let you know as soon as I have my car 😉

Not yet. Delivery of my car was scheduled for 15 April but due to the coronacrisis I have absolutely no idea when I can expect my new car.
