It was a kick seeing two young guys talking about how people are going to talk about driving in the future. Surprisingly well observed. I sort of see this all of the time, driving around in my old pickup that has 4 wheels, an engine, some mirrors, and a radio. I see people going behind me like they just assume I have a backup camera. Or they cut in front of me then jam on their brakes like mine actually work or something. Or their eyes bug out when they see that I can actually put an 8' long piece of drywall in my bed and close the tailgate. The world changes constantly. That's what makes it interesting - especially when you can see the changes while standing back a pace from them.

As such my motorbike and sidecar (very hard to ride) is far more of an event than a 911. I have a lot of questions about this as a concept. 1) Who gets paid for this "Taxi Service"? Is it subscription based? or just "On Demand" as and when you book the taxi? (I get the "Entrepeneurial part of "Owning a flock" but the cost of entry into that market is quite high if you consider it) 2) Elon and yourself mentioned being able to buy them for around $30,000, so does that mean they'd primarily be sold to individuals? or businesses? is the "Taxi" part a bit defeated if it's just in private ownership? 3) How much of a market actually exists for autonomous taxi services? How does this effect cities like New York where cabs and taxi's are also someones livelihood? 4) The seats may be plush, but the design of them looks slippery, as though a passenger could submarine in it should an accident occur. 5) The Very nice but clearly modelled 3D environment of the Warner Brothers Studio's in the infotainment screen also smells like they've been programming the car's to recognise where they are for some-time, as a show-case that's fine, but there's very little in the way of an actual capability demonstration here if the car knows where it is at all times because it's been "Taught" that by the engineers, and the max speed was 15Kph 6) where's this infrastructure for "induction charging"? I'm not saying it's not possible, I know it very much is, but it's very early in development so far and it'll take YEARS for it to be integrated into the highways, it makes 2026 as a delivery date seem excessively optimistic. 7) What redundancy systems exist as a safety back-up should any part of the autonomous system fail? I feel like there should be some form of human over-ride just in case. 8) What kind of environmental testing has this vehicle been through? So for instance, in circumstances where it's heavy rain, snow, hail or other such weather types that can obscure the sensors that the vehicle relies on to drive, how does it deal with that? (Of course this is sort of extreme edge cases, but it's worth considering)

All those questions at the start... what about Tesla driving into a road work barrier recently? Show the taxis in a city and all its chaos. Show the taxis at speed. Look up waymo failures in AZ and SF. I'll believe it when I see it in a real environment for a year.

There's plenty of uncut self driving videos on KZbin if you want to know the current state of FSD. Look up FSD 12.5.6, you can see them driving through dense city traffic and pretty much all weather conditions with 99% no problem.

As a Model 3 owner driver I realise that anyone NOT in a Tesla has an imperfect driving style and I worry that at motorway speeds the auto pilot mode can often slow down quite abruptly when other cars drive close to the lane lines and I’d be cautious of getting into a bumper crash from the back. This and the breaking under risky situations and speeding up again might feel like being on the sea 🌊 It may struggle to exist in a world where people’s decisions affect the AI but I welcome autonomous driving. Can’t think of a better way to travel home after a tough day at work.

The difference is, FSD is a generalized driving solution that works everywhere. Xpeng, Waymo etc are limited to pre scanned and remapped curated areas. FSD doesn't have that limitation, you can drop it anywhere, even in areas with shitty map data and it will find it's way to the destination.

How does it do around emergency vehicles though? This is something other robo taxi companies have struggled with. They get in the way or don’t yield to vehicles with emergency lights on.

I don't know, but my model 3 won't stop for schoolbus stop signs, and it ignores traffic director hand signals. (She was waving me through a stop sign, and the car wanted to stop for the sign. I had to accelerate ahead.)

Uber and Lyfts drivers won’t disappear, they’ll just be at home Collecting money while the cars do all the driving.
@thomgizzizАй бұрын
Why would the company do that? If it is profitable for a person to buy a car and then lend it to the company then the company just cuts out the middle man and gets the car themselves. Do you never think about the nonsense that pops into your head?
@CogitoetfideАй бұрын
@@thomgizziz Uber and Lyft are not taxi companies, till this day they don’t own a single car. It would be more expensive for companies like Uber and Lyft to buy and maintain an entire fleet of cars than to subcontract people who already have them.

Wayno is human supervised. There is a person sitting at a very nice driving sim control set monitoring and assisting the car every minute. The cars cost well north of $100k. When Tesla gets these vehicles onto the road Waymo will be done. They will have to buy robotaxis from Tesla to survive. Waymo is not autonomous nor is it scalable. If it was that great it would have already killed uber and regular taxis.
