I have a 2006 E220 W211 and this didn't work, presumably as the garage updated the Comand software. Is the only option now to get a garage to use the Star system to amend driver distraction settings, or is there another hack?

It's probably the transponder inside the key. Try replacing the battery, otherwise you'll probably need a new key.
