Did a Turbo-Conversion on my James Cook T1 a couple of years back. I used a Unimog manifold which obstructs the right hand engine mount which I modified, otherwise I used a Sprinter turbo a BMW charge cooler, modified the air filter housing and moved it slightly over to the right and fabricated a cold air intake through the fender. The fuel pump and injectors were brought up to sprinter standard and of course completely overhauld. I also added water-methanol injection that comes on when max power is needed, this keeps the charge cooler and ads significant power. I kept the power down to 150 HP (dyno) more would have been possible but I wanted to keep it relyable and safe. You´ll find the cooling system that is barely adaquate at the best of times has to be upgraded as rising water temperature on long hill climbs bleeds off power this leeds to power loss which in turn... Again the limited space under the hood of the T1 makes this a challenge so I had a larger radiator built which also takes up the space of the oil cooler, this was then repositioned undernieth the water cooler . Actually I used a slimline oil cooler. Really oil temperature is not a problem on this engine its keeping the water temp to about 80° C to prevent power loss. My objective with this was not to have max exelleration but to keep up with modern traffic on long hill climbs pulling a trailor. This was quite easyly accieved, also a great byproduct is the economy, you can expect 20% less fuel consumption after running in and if you tale it easy. Hallo Marc, Diese Idee mit dem Turboanbau hege ich auch bei meinen Sprinter 208D mit seinen 79 PS. Muß man den Turbo eintragen lassen? Ist ein Spritmehrverbrauch zu verzeichen? Ich denke, das vom Mercedes Vito 110 TD der Lader auch paßt!

Yes we finished this project and yes we tested it. We still own this car but don´t use it because we have a new one build. We never made a driven video because the reason for building was a constant driving on a motorway.

Hi, I'm in the middle of turboing a Hymer on a 410D chassis, same chassis as your van. I was about to start building an exaust manifold when I came across your Utube film. Could you tell me where you got your exhaust manifold from or have you got a Mercedes part no for it, would save me an enormous amount of work.

Hi Marc, intercooler is from which car? Airfilter is something universal? I´m working on swap 601.640 and 601.970 (308d), everithing is done and working :-) but now I´m looking for suitable intercooler and airfilter/airbox. Thanks for help ;-) ;-)

Hi Lubos, The Intercooler is from a Ford TD with changed inlet to 60mm. I Think it was Ford Mondeo II. I bought it second Hand. The Air Filter is K&N universal with 60mm inlet. The original has not enough Airflow for a Turbo. You can fix the K&N into the Original Air-Box but you have to Open it at the top for maximum Air flow, or you use a 60mm tube, like Break Cooling or Heating Pipe and fix it at the Air Box additionally. Sorry, I am not always online. It is not a week end work. On engine side you have to change the Exhaust (63mm). Pump etc. are original. The most complicated thing is to get the Airtubes (Turbo in and out) and the Intercooler fixed in the car. Not many space for it and all has to be measured and build yourself. At least you have to change maximum fuel volume at the fuel pump. Just two screws but after each change to have to check if the car is not smooking. Takes a while. Cheers Marc

The manifold is self made from 63mm stainless steel with original mercedes catalysator (KT0027) and original silencer. Silencer is left on same place as original.

HalloMarc, Habe einen Vierzylinder 98er Sprinter 208D. Weißt du, ob bei dem OM 601 auch eine Turbine anbaubar ist? Brauch man ja wohl sicher ein anderen Krümmer, nehme ich an? Oder paßt der vom alten MB Vito 110 TD?

Sorry habe es nur für den Fünfzylinder gemacht. Den Sprinter gab es wahlweise als 208 und 208cdi. Da wäre wohl ein kompletter Tausch des Motors sinnvoller. Für das alte Modell (T1) gab es nie serienmäßig einen Turbomotor.

You can use whole engine from Vito 110TD (601.970) with turbo, but you have to swap couple of things from 601.640 (original 208d engine). You have to swap: flywheel, holders for engine, water pump, box for oil filter, oil cooler, box for diesel filter, oil sump and pump - only one part .... and some small things :-D... there is not to much place for turbo, but with hammer you will be able to do that :-D .... 601.970 has probably diferent camshaft (timing), diffusors in cylinder head, injection pump and injectors ... these engines are like LEGO - almost everithing is possible swaped and it fits :-D have fun ;-)
