AFAIK (as far as I know), as I comment in Forums for a couple of the US car magazines, D-B has stated that they didn't take into account US domestic market for the X pickup trucks (they would need Nissan's manufacturing and some engine-manufacturing arrangement, since Nissan doesn't make their own diesels over here and Mercedes won't use their own I4 and V6 diesels in Europe on X-trucks). That would rule out the use of the Navara (USDM Nissan Frontier is still made on the older platform, rather than today's) and would need to MAKE THEIR OWN TRUCK. If somehow miraculously D-B changes their minds and use existing engines, platforms and (Nissan's) manufacturing plants prices would range from ~ U$35K (X400 crew cab w/Nissan's NA 3.7L VQ V6) to U$60K (fully loaded X350d crew cab w/Cummins TD-2.8L I4). I would rule out the use of a gas/petrol powered I4 for now until Mercedes strengthen out the T-2.0L (they use a transversal version on the USDM Metris / Vito / V-Class smaller vans, but they could alter the longitudinal version from the C-Class).

Can't do that with any four door crew models unless you opt for a long bed. That's why I went with a SuperCab F150 and a 6.5' bed. Still can't get an 8' couch in the back with the gate shut but at least it's not hanging 3' off the back.

Erwin Roman I love the look of the F150 SuperCab 6.5 bed and the Regular Cab 8 Bed. I drive a '17 Tacoma Access Cab with 6 foot bed myself. I like the reliability and mine has the 6 speed manual. And I agree with you that Crew Cab short bed trucks are the least useful of all trucks.

To be clear...why would I want to go into a low margin high volume market when the market is saturated by japanese pick ups with a good track record at half the price? The US market still likes pickups but why buy this over the next identical pick up? The design says urban leisure where the bric markets says luxary people carriers? Not being rude but I think you are missing the wider point. People will by this for the same reasons they buy any Mercedes. Just look at the GLE coupe, a car nobody asked for. Yet it enjoys sales success nonetheless.

The GLEC is targeted at the white collar luxury buyer who is considering the purchase of a BMW x6 M. The Mercedes truck is designed to appeal to blue collar buyers in the BRIC nations. The Mercedes looks too close for comfort to the VW Amorak commercial pickup released in 2010 and currently sells 90000 units a year to BRIC markets. the standard thinking is that as these markets become prosperous the buyers will demand luxury brands.Mercedes feels that it can compete at these volumes with expected higher brand margins to justify its higher manufacturing costs. In two years you can see if they have succeeded.

These look really good and Mercedes has always had the tools to make a good pickup. They just didn't. There are 3 things I don't understand. The front license plate wasn't thought of even though its a requirement in several states and countries. They should have used more cheap plastics for the cladding on the off road pickup. Part of the reason for the cladding is to replace it cheaply when it's damaged. Carbon fiber cladding would be freakishly expensive to replace. Both lack quite a bit utility.

Finally a Euro car maker builds a real pick-up truck! Most European people's definition of a pick-up truck is an underpowered diesel powered flatnose-cabover little engine cutdown van! I'm not making that up! European people aren't big on pick-up trucks because they never knew of one! OK, the '16-17 US-spec Nissan Frontier is the LAST GENERATION of the Navara / NP300 (Mexico still build for themselves the even older generation). US still haven't got the new one, which is already on sale as Nissan and Renault and will be as a Mercedes.. Not at all related to Nissan's BOF product, FCA, OTOH, doesn't build a midsize or small size BOF pickup truck. They build overseas, on Fiat and Ram nameplates, unibody car / crossover-based FWD pickups, like the (Jeep Renegade-based) midsize Fiat Toro in Brazil and the small Fiat Strada and Ram 700 in Mexico. There are circulated rumors FCA is considering to build the Toro in Mexico (have to do it to get around US tax laws that would make it too expensive) for the Ram nameplate in USDM. I'd give the name RAM 1000, keeping with their naming policy... (FCA showed publicly a Jeep prototype of this very pickup, but the talk is for Ram to get the production version)

Reading the comment section, i'm failing to understand why this is a problem or why people are hating on this truck. Just because its expensive it shouldn't be made? OK so Lamborghini should stop making cars cause we can't all afford them Lol. Mercedes Benz has a long history of making utility vehicles that are reasonably priced, from buses to vans and pick up trucks. If you go to any European city you will find mostly Mercedes utility vehicles. Mercedes luxury brand is more prolific in the U.S.A and I think people in America either assume or confuse the Mercedes brand as an elitist based brand which is far from the truth.

Cool truck but to hi tec to off road, not much inside space for some one over 6 foot or 200 pounds, and I bet it sucks off road. That hi tec stuff does not perform as good just engaging 4x4 low and then placing the trans in a lower gear.
