Mercedes R class | burned Hella HID Bi-xenon projector, EvoX R projector replacement (AFS headlight)

For a customer, we repaired and upgraded these Hella Bi-xenon headlights with new projectors: the EvoX-R which improved the output massively. The original Hella projector reflectors were severely burned. The light output improved by 300% according to our light meter. See the results in this video, and the instructions how to do this retrofit on a Hella headlight.
Please note: you need the additional D2S extension cables in order to connect the D2S igniter properly!

Retrofitting refers to the addition of new technology or features to older systems. These days there are a lot of people who put a simple plug & play xenon kit in their halogen headlight housing in an attempt to improve night vision and looks of their vehicle. In fact they don’t realize that their headlight beams are often worse than before. Night vision achieves relatively little improvement on night vision because of a poor beam pattern, which increases the blinding of other road users. This is because their headlight housings are designed for halogen and not xenon.
A true Bi-Xenon projector update is now possible for your car. Such an upgrade will significantly improve your light output from 700-2100 lumens to 2800 and 3500 lumens, without blinding other traffic with glare from your headlight. Upgrade your headlight OEM style!

Just finished the projector lens swap and lemme just say this video helped ALOT; IN WHAT TO EXPECT. Especially the hidden screw that holds the HEADLIGHT lens besides just the butyl sealant. The headlight is very hard to pry open and takes a few trips to the oven to heat it up again. Also gotta watch how you pry it open cause it has to be in a straight motion if not you can twist and break the inside reflectors, etc. thanks again for the video. Keep up the great work.

Hats off to you sir, That is one complicated retrofit, I have to say by just the number of bolts around that AFS system. Evox-R projectors look very basic, but for sure they will not be easily entertained in any housing & having said that they are a performer. Again, great work as usual.

Yes, early model Escalde should have the E55 projector and yes it is a major upgrade for the old burned ones :-)

When you have changed te projectors it can be the sensor screw is tightened too hard. Otherwise probably an electrical problem with a sensor, maybe a dealership can help you finding the problem.

I had the very same problem. It appears that the sensor-alike red circle have to be tightened to the very same position when you fix it back. Not to mention that the position of the black bracket has to be the same. It worked for me. Remember to take a picture of this wheel when you are about to take it off.

Just wrap the old reflector with chromed alu foil and use heat resist glue. Easy cheap and usable

combination of heat and uv rays burn bowls , if you use a higher wattage ballast , or a cheaper bulbs , the produce more uv rays the burning will happen quicker

Yes, when the headlight is sealed with butyl it can be re-used. When it would be sealed with permaseal, new sealant (butyl needs to be used).

Yes, it is possible but needs a lot of custom work. The EvoX-R ECE or DOT is a direct install, we would recommend this one!

Why did you use same sealant? Is it ok? Still waterproof?

The headlight is sealed with butyl. When butyl is heated it gets soft and can be opened and for it can be heated again for sealing the headlight. So no need for other sealant.

The projector itself doesn't have a leveling motor, only the bi-xenon mechanism, the same as with original projectors. In general leveling is done on the complete inner part of the headlight, so that the high beam part also is adjusted.

@@TheHarooni Halogen (even with projectors) usually not. Cars with xenon are usually equipped with this system because a lot of countries have or had the rule xenon headlights needed to be self leveling.

depends what bulbs your using or if you have upgraded the ballast to higher then a 35 watt unit the burning will happen quicker , all projectors will burn , just a matter of time
