The Lid sensor is bad. That sound that you’re hearing is the lid motor not the top. The lid sensor supposed to send signal to the top saying the lid is up. But it’s not doing that and the top will not come down because it shows that the lid is still down.

I expereince the same problem every now and then. There is a sensor under the windows, registering the endposition. The roof expects this sensor to be touched. Sometimes the power-window motor can not activate this sensor because the window seems to be stuck 1mm above the zero line. In this case I push the upper edge of the lowered window by hand - in my car it is the right one. I gibe it a short but powerful push and immediately the roof continues to do its work. Since a lot of you guys seem to experience this problem I hope that a couple of you can live with this workaround like I do.

If you had the battery disconnected you need to sync the windows, I had similar issue once I synced the windows it fixed my top getting stuck halfway

How do you bleed the system? I was told it was a self bleed.

Over-engineered nightmare of a convertible top. I'm selling my '01 SL for this reason alone. Love the car.....hate being afraid to operate the top for fear of another repair.

My 1999 SL 500 is doing the same thing. But It did this once before and I installed a new battery at the roof worked fine.. So I think in my case I have let it sit too long and now battery is too weak? Do u agree?

YOU SAID YOU WERE GOING TO ROAD TEST THE CAR TO DETERMIN IF POSSIBLE SPEED SENSORS WERE THE PROBLEM. AND THAT YOU WOULD UPLOAD A SECOND VIDEO (PART 2) TO SHOW WHAT YOU DISCOVERED MANY OF US ARE ASKING THE SAME QUESTION DID YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM??

Also Mr Ronnie - My 99 SL 500 is all original with 52k original miles. Mine sat for about 1 yr with a float charger in my shop. And then I went to crank it it. Well it turned over very well. The it turns over like a top but, would no crank and my gas gauge shows empty. So I filled her up and still won crank. So I immediately changed out the fuel filter and fuel pump. now it wont turn over at all? what gives the fuel gauge still shows I am empty. Help Pls ???

Hi Victor I have a similar problem with a 1997 sl500 the tonneau comes up the bow comes up the windows work fine but that’s where it stops. I had 7 out of the 11 cylinders rebuilt by Top hydraulics and tested the micro switch on the bow cylinder it had 0 ohms when the bow was straight up as it should. I tested the magnetic switch above the header was ok did you ever find out why the vehicle you were working on did not unlock the front locks? Jerry in PA

I cant say whats wrong without seeing the car. It depends what its doing. Close it manually and have it diagnosed

i had this problem fixed by adding more fluid in hyrraulic resoviour undfer spare tire and fixing leaking cylinders in soft top storage area not just the ones in trunk causing system to loose pressure

You should always fix the cylinders in pairs otherwise here is too much pressure on the non repaired cylinder.
