Mercedes SLK 250 Glovebox Repair

The glovebox door on my 2014 Mercedes Benz SLK 250 started to separate from the glovebox itself so I decided to glue it back together.

There is airbag sign under glove box. Do I need to disconnect the car battery before removing the glove box so that air bag does not go off ?

It's always safer to disconnect the car battery, especially with air bags in the mix. That said, I've disconnected air bags with the battery connected and not had any issues, but I am probably playing with fire on that one. So, my advice is to disconnect the battery every time.

Ya, sorry, I didn't think to record until after I had the glove box out. I think I did mention what I did to remove it, but I realize that isn't as helpful. Maybe I will do another video of just the removal/reinstallation.

I had the problem after 18 months in south Florida. Repaired at delray dealer. Returning to Massachusetts and had the same problem after another 18 months. I still haven’t fixed it.

Thanks for watching. It's still holding perfect. And we routinely get summer temps in the mid 90s.

Knowing that gluing is going to determine whether this fix works or not. I discovered by pulling the pins and a small block retaining clip on one side, you can detach the actual glove box door from the assembly. But you have to remove the assembly first.This should make gluing and clamping a little bit easier. Cross your fingers

I have an SLK 250 and have the same problem. I would like to remove just the door if possible, almost all of it has peeled and is hanging on by the latch that opens the glovebox. I wonder if a body shop can fix it?

I first noticed this when the glove box door would not close for the very first time and could tell the door would not close as it was binding on the dash on the right hand side.. Repeated attempts to close caused the entire top of the glove box cover to separate as it hit in the edge of the dash when trying to close. I looked at it and it appeared to be sealed at the factory with either an thin line of adhesive or thin double sided tape. I ordered some 3M VHB (very high bond) double sided tape and taped across the entire top edge and used a wooden ruler to protect the door vinyl and clamped with three furniture clamps until set up. This appears to have worked, and with no visable glue or tape and no removal of the glove box. I did run the new 1/2 inch wide tape into the inner panel so there was more surface area to stick to in addition to the 1/8 inch line where the original glue or tape made contact. VHB tape is often used in place of rivets in car assembly. This probably would not works if the glovebox cover was allowed to spring completely loose over time until the sides and bottom were pulled lose as well.

Unfortunately, I did not experience that. If you can get ahold of an OBD tool that can reset airbag lights, you could try resetting it and see if it comes back.

I did not experience an airbag fault light after reinstalling the glove box. You will probably need an SRS scan tool to reset the light. I believe you can borrow one from Autozone or Advance Auto.

@@OakHollowGarage I got the fault (didn't think to disconnect the battery first!) My own cheapo scanner didn't work, nor did the loaners at Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone. I ended up buying a (used) iCarsoft i980 scanner, which is made to read Mercedes codes. Cleared it in less than 3 minutes. FWIW, the fault found was "SRS Squib, open circuit", which I knew was not the case. Before my scanner arrived, I checked all of the SRS system fuses. Have fun with THAT! The fuse panel in the trunk is especially enjoyable accessing!

Hi Thomas. Well two years ago I followed your video as best I could and replaced the glue along the top sides and all along the top of my glove box as it had been pulling away like yours did from the sun in Bakersville California and the heat drying out the factory glue which had a thing start peeling. Anyway now year and a half later the bottom left is doing the same thing but it’s extremely difficult to get to since the piece right below it is fixed and I can’t figure out how to take it off I think it’s just part of the whole glove box. If you have any ideas can you please get back to me. I’d appreciate it thank you

Just a couple bucks under $900 at my local MB dealer - what a ripoff! They replace the whole glove box - no repairs, and they don't "just" replace the GB door. Finding the right glue is a gamble. I tried Gorilla Glue double sided tape initially. Worked for a day. I completed my repair, thanks to this video - now looking to see how long it holds. (Used SEM Quick-set 50 2-part epoxy glue.) But I'm wondering if it might make sense to remove the glove box as shown here, then detach the door from the box, and take it to an auto-body repair shop and pay for their expertise & knowledge of glue products. If my repair doesn't withstand the FL heat this summer, that'll be my next plan.

Not really. That's simply the only glue I've tried to use. BTW - it's still holding perfectly.

Having this issue, talked to another person with same issue here in Florida and she had hers replaced and then happened to replacement as well. Your holding up now thats its august? I may have appostlry guy look at replacing it with better material. Idk

After reinstalling the glove box, how do you reset the Front Right Malfunction Service Required message?

The message didn't trip for me when I did the removal. I'm not sure, but if you have access to an OBD tool, you should be able to reset the message.

I had the exact same problem with my SLK 350 2012. I dropped the glove box fixed the covering with a contact cement. It looks great, but my SRS light came on and I can't seem to turn it off. I don't have a scan tool, and I'm considering going to the dealer. What do you think? Any ideas? I understand I have to have a scan tool to reset the SRS passenger side system.

I used JB Weld body panel adhesive and gap filler. So far it has held fine. We just went through a solid month of days above 90.
