Hi. I love your reactions. The song is from a Chilean composer, singer-songwriter, folklorist, and visual artist Violeta Parra. This song was performed originally by Parra in 1966 one year before She committed suicide. Mercedes later made it more international and a hit . Mercedes Sosa was and still is an icon of many soul, patriotic and liberal songs against cruel dictatorship in many Latin american countries, Her music made people hail her as the "voice of the voiceless ones". She was from Argentina from the country side named Tucuman and was a mestizo, white and native descent. During hard political times in the 70's She received death threats and was arrested in a concert later on. She was released through international intervention. Went to exile manny years to Europe and came back to Her Argentina many decades later. This was an amazing singer, performed many Latin and Brazilian, Cuban songs in Europe Theathers in Paris, Coliseum in Rome, The Vatican and Carnegie Hall in New York and the Colosseum in Rome and many others. Was an UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Latin America and the Caribbean. She was and still is a great influence for many young singers of many different genres. She was proof of how Music can move , change and help people fight for their rights. Thanks for doing this video reaction. I hope you d more of Her songs in the Future. She did a very special song from Leon Gieco, "Solo le pido a Dios" that like this song Gracias a La Vida became a hymn for hope during difficult times, it would be nice if you do a reaction of that one.

I grew up with my mom playing Mercedes, she told me that she was discovered at a local talent show and a legend was born. Every time i hear "La Negra" i remember my mom and Mendoza, Ar. If my memory serves me right, she left Argentina during the dictatorship to Italy where this performance was done.

El 9 de julio se cumplió un aniversario más de su muerte. La muerte de nuestra querida "negra" como la llamábamos cariñosamente. Mercedes inmortal. Su compromiso fue más de una vez una bocanada de aire y un consuelo, mujer valiente con una historia de lucha que tuvo que vivir en el exilio para que no la maten en la dictadura de los años 70, ella era nuestro canto de libertad. Gracias a la vida que seas nuestra gran Mercedes, nuestro orgullo. Mujer de talento natural que no necesito estudiar para regalarnos su preciosa voz. Te recomiendo que escuches a Victor Heredia, Mercedes Sosa fue si madrina artistica. Escucha "sobreviviendo"
