What a brilliant video,I consider myself a reasonably competent diy mechanic but the information on this video gave me the confidence to do it myself and I followed all the steps ,it started first turn of the key and runs much better.I think people like Bevoin don't know how much inspiration they give to others. Carry on😃

It is hardly to believe, how easy it is to change the fuel filter. And the 313 CDI hast just the same engine as the 311 CDI has, only another engine chip, isn´t it? And my 313 CDI doen´t has this water sensor button inside the cab. Thank you for uploading, so I can save some money in the future doing this on my own. Good work, man!

I watched this, the air & oil filter videos last night to complete a service on my 2002 LWB sprinter this morning as i'm getting a bit pissed off with the size of bills my van seems to attract so thought i'd have a go - i had no idea it was this simple! In the fourteen years i've owned my van i've never serviced it myself and after this, (for servicing at least) i won't be using a garage again that's for sure. The parts including 10L of MB fully synthetic (228.51) oil and a full set of Bosch filters including the pollen one came to less than £80 via ebay, i've easily saved at least £200. The cherry on the cake was the video you made showing how to reset the service clock on the dash - bloody brilliant videos Bevoin1970 Many Thanks.

My pleasure, I must have saved a small fortune doing my own filter changes on my old van, plus I knew it had been done too, and that I wasn't paying for work done by someone else who really hadn't changed them at all. Now, I have a Mercedes mechanic who comes to my house and changes my filters, so I don't have to get dirty anymore..LOl :-) Thanks Michael

Yes your 5 cyl engine would be slightly different in layout to my old 311 4 cyl. The air filt should be fairly prominent in view Im guessing, usually a large rectangular black plastic box shape somewhere in the engine bay, with large dia hoses coming off it. You may be talking about the Pollen filter, in which case I have no idea on the whereabouts of that filter if at all fitted. Im happy you found this video of some help in your own servicing, good for you. Hope you have many safe miles again.

Its an electric fuel pump on the newer Sprinters, what you have to be careful of is not sucking in more air once your engine is up and running. This is where you need to take care in refitting diesel fuel pipes back to your new filter, so long as the pipe connections are good and tight, air tight etc, once initial air is bled from the fuel system all should be ok. Once running take her for a spin, cover a few miles to fully bleed the air out the fuel lines.

@Bevoin1970

@dumbell2312 Air bubbles in the fuel line are BAD !!! in normal working situations, however if you have just changed the fuel filter, you cant avoid getting air in the system. By filling the diesel filter up with diesel, you enable the engine to fire up quicker after filter change, then if you drive a few miles around the block, this will purge the pipes of any remaining air in the system, and all will be back to normal. Good for you for attempting this yourself. Thanks for watching :-)

Don't know anything about that, Im no mechanic. However Im mechanically minded & have done this filter change a hundred times or more on my Sprinter & mates vans without a problem. The only problem you can/will get is AIR in the fuel system, hence the grease around any "O" rings to assist in a smooth snug fit, and filling filter with clean diesel.Once bled of all air & if my procedure is followed, no more air should get sucked in and all will be ok untill the next filter change. Hope this helps.

For those that are having trouble with priming the air from the fuel system after a fuel filter change (which i did), i thought i would share what i did to bleed the fuel system, and it worked. For starters, the O rings, i took the old ones to a place that sells every type of seal you could imagine, and they did not have this size, - The O rings have to come from a Mercedes Benz dealer as a spare part, they are not a standard size O ring, and if you try to fit anything else other than the Mercedes Benz ones, they will probably tear going in - SO USE MERCEDES BENZ O RINGS!!!! - VERY IMPORTANT!!! After you have the O rings from Mercedes Benz, make sure there is no dirt where they seat, and put a smear of grease on them, like in this video, or they will probably tear going in. If you have any tears or cuts in the O rings, the system will draw in air, and the engine will not start and/or run. After the filter is fitted, remove the middle fuel line from the top of the filter, (the one with the little clip holding it), Get a small funnel that fits snug into the middle hole in the top of the fuel filter, and fill it up with diesel (about 250ml should do it), then loosen the bleed screw on the top of the filter until you see air bubbles coming out of the sides of the screw (the diesel in the funnel is pushing the air out of the filter, keep filling the funnel if you have to), when the bubbles stop coming out, and all that comes out is diesel, tighten the bleed screw back up, leave the funnel in the top - the funnel still should have some diesel in it. Ok, the filter is now bled..... Then, get hold of a fat syringe that will hold about 100 to 200ml of liquid, (i got mine from an auto spares shop) with an end on it that fits snugly in the fuel line that has been removed from the fuel filter (the middle one we took of earlier), fill the syringe full of diesel and make sure there is no air in the syringe at all. Then stick in the fuel line/hose that goes to the middle of the fuel filter (make sure its a snug fit), and start pushing the syringe and push the diesel through the fuel line, when i did it, a few bubbles came up through the funnel full of fuel, i kept pumping the syringe and it moved in about 1/4 inch. Now the fuel line is purged. Remove the funnel, and make sure diesel is full to the very top of the middle hole (MAKE SURE ITS FULL TO THE VERY TOP) then fit the middle fuel line back on to the filter. Then start the engine, dont touch the accelerator pedal, it should fire, mine did I hope this helps someone out, i had major trouble getting mine to start, it just would not fire at all, when i tried this method, it started within 5 seconds. Good luck.

@bassmandudge That red light should come on on switching the ignition on, it stays on a couple of seconds then goes out. Its a sort of test I think. Take a look when you next switch the ignition on. If its not coming on at all, then either the plug going into the filter is not making a connection, or the sensor itself in the base of the diesel filter is at fault. Its nothing major I know, but if you like things to work properly, then thats where you need to look.

I set about a full service on my 04 sprinter following all your vids for fuel air and oil service. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks you for uploading these. One question though..the water sensor has never come on in my van since i have owned it (5 years) the electrical connector plug on the loom doesn't click into the sensor..it feels like there should be a retaining catch on the left side but no matter what I do I can't get it to engage, should it? of is it just a simple push fit? Thanks

I changed the fuel & air filter today with ease due to seeing your video, however it (fuel) was more buried in the engine bay as the engine is the 2.7 litre 5 cylinder. I couldnt get the oil filter housing loosened using the filter wrench for this model as it is a smaller diameter (75mm). Also where is the cabin filter housed? I couldnt find it anywhere on my 2002 model to fit a fresh one

Do you still see air bubbles in your fuel line? if yes & you have just changed the diesel filter, you may have damaged one of the O rings. I have had same situation. I had to replace the centre plastic pipe that goes into the filter, it comes with a new O ring. It sounds to me like your sucking air in from somewhere. Smear a small amount of grease around all the O rings before assembly. I have never changed the water sensor O ring, bottom of filter. No air can be allowed to get into fuel lines

@halopersin In England we have two types of diesel - the usual clear coloured stuff that you can buy from all garages across the land, and which all diesel cars, trucks, vans etc use on a daily basis. The second type is coloured red, easily identifiable in a clear container, much cheaper than the regular diesel and is only supposed to be used in agricultural machinery, i.e. tractors, stationary engines, generators and construction type vehicles, JCB, Caterpillar etc. So similar to USA I think

thanks for replying I changed the O ring @ the bottom, this got the motor started again but here the interesting part, when the motor is cold it starts instantly on the tern of the key, but when the motor gets hot it takes about 10 sec to start and then if you do a few more starts it doesn't start and back to Square one. I 'm starting to think it may have a injector that leaks ?? it seams to do with metal expanding? somewhere. Diesel still falls back from the filter, this is the tank line?

Just like to say Im an owner/ driver, with an engineering mind and an aversion to paying hefty garage bills. I don't possess all the specialist tools available to Mercedes Mechanics, just what's available around the home, so yes there probably are special pliers for doing this, I just don't have them. Also why disconnect the battery just to unplug a water drain plug? It's not live and the ignition isn't switched on so nothing will happen, Im just simply pulling the plug out. Thanx for watching

@bassmandudge My water sensor never came on either in 4 years. My plug was exactly the same as you describe. I think from memory ( I don't have this van any more) it does have a clip on the side of the plug, but I may be wrong. Spray WD40 all over and inside the plug and mating parts, then just push it home fully, thats as best as you can possibly do really. I really can't remember. Just push it all the way in as far as it will go, so long as your red light doesn't stay on your ok. Glad to help

Hi thank you for the video. Is your engine running a mechanical pump or is it the new electric pump, i have a 2002 vito 112CDI and i have change the filter and now it cranks over, but will not start? the fuel line in the center of the filter going to the mechanical pump is showing air bubbles as its cranking? Hi Sprinter Lovers from Seattle, USA I have done filter change myself on the V6, 2007 model. It is a little bit easier since it you don't have to deal with the water drain plug at the bottom of the fuel filter. My comment was: doesn't he need a special pair of pliers to take off those special hose clams? and Doesn't he need to disconnect the battery terminal before he change the filter? Just some thoughts!

Yeah you could just try undoing the water drain tap a small amount and drain off any water that could be inside your diesel filter. Failing change the whole filter for a new one and take it from there.

@Bevoin1970 The last time I went to a dealer for service was 15 years ago for diagnosis and that was when no one else owned diag. equipment. Now in America you can buy cheap diag. equipment, buy cheap parts online and have some mechanic install them at a low, pre-set charge. I love to put the sprinter engine plus 5-speed trans on a 1990-91 mercedes 350 SDL.

Another excellent video: thanks for sharing. One question: are there different options for the filter? On my 2000 311, there is no no water sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter (nor anywhere to connect one). Most dealers I've checked out online assume the filter has the sensor so don't offer an alternative.
@Bevoin1970
@Bevoin1970 11 жыл бұрын
Yes on the older model Sprinters, there was indeed a diesel filter that didn't have the water sensor fitted. This was a new addition on future Sprinters, so Im guessing some parts suppliers are assuming the old filter has died out. You could fit a water sensor type, but you wouldn't be able to wire it up electrically.That wouldn't stop you using that type of filter though, so long as you had the sensor fitted in the base to bung up the hole.
@1nd1p0p
@1nd1p0p 11 жыл бұрын
Bevoin1970 Ah, now it makes sense :-) Now I know what to ask for (will visit local auto-factors to be sure, rather than relying on internet). I'm not sure though if the 'cradle' around the filter has a solid base (i.e. no hole to allow fitting the sensor). I'll post a part number when I get one, in case anyone else has the same.

@Bevoin1970 Cheers for the info. The plug stayys connected it just doesn't feel right to me. There is no problem with the running so will try some wd40...it seems like there is some resistance when I push the connector in...it pushes back ever so slightly so feels like it isn't "Home" have checked there is nothing fouling and can't see anything obvious. I know when I first undid it, it came off very easily so I presume it has always been that way. Thanks again for your advice...

@jellysidhu The more air you leave in the system, the more difficulty you will have starting the engine up after a filter change. By filling the filter with fuel, your making starting up easier, then continue to run the engine to help bleed out remaining air in the pipes...

@petefusaro Quite an easy job to do isn't it really, saves a packet in Garage fees for such an easy to do job. Important you don't damage any "O" rings when re-fitting pipes on top of filter housing otherwise your engine will begin to suck in air, past damaged O rings, resulting in difficulty in starting engine. A small smear of grease around the O ring and gently re-assemble normally does the trick. Glad it all helped Pete - Thanks

I have run out of ideas i took it to Mercedes work shop and they also fix it for about 50 starts now it is siting in the shed. If you could help!! it would be much appreciated!!!! Thanks.

Hi Paul. Many thaks for the vid. Ive just done my fuel filter on my 2003 311cdi and your vid was a great help, the only thing i had trouble with was getting the water censor on the bottom to turn,it just doesnt seem to want to turn, its pretty snug in hole but just pushed in until i can confirm i just need to give it more force(so i have been trawling through YT to see if i can find a varient on this but your vid seems to be the only one covering this type of filter, so would you be kind enough to let me know how if you had to put a bit of pressure on to get it to turn? Cheers Shane

ad- VAN-ture Thanks for great feedback. From memory I think mine could be a tight fit. I'm guessing if it looks like mine did in this video, then it's definitely going to fit the exact same way, so just apply some pressure to it. Remember it only needs to turn so far like in the video. There are two locating pips like on a bayonet light bulb. If you twist those past the opening slot you'll never pull it out. Worse case scenario is you have to buy a new water sensor (not expensive) and refit that to your new diesel filter. Good luck

Im at a loss now, in my opinion I would be suspecting injectors by now, assuming that you have eliminated all the air bubbles from your fuel system first...

No this job is easy to do, so long as you work in clean conditions and you don't damage pipe connections and rubber 'O' rings when refitting Pipes to diesel filter. Also make sure you run the engine after completion to purge the fuel pipes of any air bubbles otherwise difficulty in starting your engine may be experienced. Good Luck :-)

Well I bought the exact same fuel filter in this video then discovered my 2002, 2.2L, (in Germany) has no water sensor in the bottom. And it has no small bolt in the top. Where do I buy parts for this version? I have not found a source of parts yet. Thanks.

I can only suggest your nearest Mercedes Benz Dealer. They will know exactly which filter you need by the vehicle VIN number.

That looked more like water than diesel that you drained off from the plug, the “wif” light is playing up on mine, it sometimes flickers, sometimes it’s very faint and at other times it doesn’t even come on. Van runs perfectly yet when I open the drain plug nothing comes out, even when I remove it fully. I unplugged the connector and cleaned it up and sprayed with wd40 but to no avail.

When I took out the water drain plug on an 2003 Sprinter nothing came out. Do you think my problem is the fuel filter or perhaps the in tank fuel pump? Thank you for this video!
@Bevoin1970

If that diesel filter was full of fuel like it should be, then you asking out the water drain plug should have resulted in fuel from the filter running out. On that basis maybe there is a problem between the diesel filter and the tank that needs investigating.

+Bevoin1970 Thanks for the reply, I have a fuel filter on order. The Sprinter won't start, it acts fuel starved. Could the filter be so old that it completely stops the flow of fuel? Thanks again and I'll probably be asking more questions when I get the filter installed on thursday, cheers.

+WanderlustmanChris my knowledge is limited, I'm an owner driver with a little know how, I'm not a Mercedes mechanic. If I can help then I sure will, but I don't know it all. If you fill the new filter up with diesel like I showed in the film, you should get the engine running, then the air needs bleeding out the system by going for a run. Assuming no more air gets in, and assuming your fuel pump is ok, then all should be good. If not good then you need to work backwards and eliminate probable causes as you investigate. Hope all goes well.

+Bevoin1970 filling filter also works on most all diesels when you run out of fuel if the filter is empty of fuel the engine is just sucking in air so fill it and bingo

If l may give a bit off advice that Mercedes told me change the water trap filter for a non water trap one as it is a common fault for the to say you have water in your fuel after taking my tank off to check it l was given this tip and it worked a treet

Im sure mine is an electrical pump, because if you listen very carefully when turning the ignition on you get to hear it ever so slightly...

@dolehead2 Thats what its all about, Good on you! Not so difficult is it really, next time you'll have more confidence, and do it quicker. Take care you don't damage any "O" rings when you re-fit the fuel pipes to the filter, and make sure you fill up the new filter with fresh clean diesel, and you wont go far wrong.... :-)

@bassmandudge It must be a certain "thing" with this type of Sprinter, its uncanny how my old van was exactly the same as you describe, the plug would push home, and yet it never felt fully home, but all worked ok, so I used to leave well alone... LOL If that small red light on the dash comes on with the ignition switched on, then goes out after a few seconds as it should then all is working properly. I do understand where your coming from though, my van was the exact same way.

Wondering why you need to add a little bit of grease to the sensor?

In all honesty you probably don’t. However I found if it had a smear of grease it was easier to insert and twist. That’s all.
