Mercedes Taxi Stroke Eight w115 of the 1970s

The “Stroke/8” proved to be a runaway model of success: for the first time Mercedes-Benz made more than 1 million saloons of one model series family - in total 1.8 million. And there were even more than 1.9 million units of all body variants sold. Working in a taxi, this model deservedly enjoyed great success due to a combination of reliability and comfort. And it is fitting that the two millionth passenger car produced since 1946 by Mercedes-Benz is also a “Stroke/8”. The model 220 D saloon rolled off the line on 9 May 1968 at the Sindelfingen plant. The last “Stroke/8” vehicles were built in 1976 - at a point in time when production of the successor model series W 123 was already under way.

OldBenz, I'm thinking of buying a Mercedes produced in roughly the 1960-1975 era. The two outstanding models of the time are, in my view, the Fintail and the Stroke Eight. My question: Is the older Fintail, in regard to quality and durability (not performance), the better car? In other words, did Mercedes have to cut corners to sell the Stroke Eight to a wider public? Or is Mercedes the exception to the general rule that the younger the car, the more plastic? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Stroke Eight's chassis and engines were carried over to the next model, w123, that was running for another 10 years and was praised for their reliability and serviceability, so yeah it shoudl be as durable as it gets. It was probably the peak of MB engineering. The only thing that kills these cars is rust, so good luck finding a rust free car, although with fintails the problem is probably worse and it will be harder to find parts. /8 should be safer, better handling, better engineered, better performance, so it you really are between these 2 the only reason why you would prefer a fintail, would be if you liked it's style more
