Thanks for the great video! The 7mm screw in the pilot bushing needs to be tightened down to 2.5nm, hope that helps anyone watching this.

Just a heads up to anyone who finds this video. First, to be clear, this guy's video's are great. However one thing I would have at least mentioned is the electric conductor plate. For this repair in the video, I'm sure the TCM harness connector replacement worked just fine, especially if you are just wanting to get running again. Shorts in this connector from fluid in the housing can cause all sorts of shifting problems, including "Limp mode" ( won't shift/stuck in second only, high rpm, etc" If you are doing this repair, you may want to also consider doing the electronic conductor plate I mentioned above. It can be found online, usually including the "pilot bushing", for $120-$200, genuine Mercedes. As you have to drop the trans pan, drain, and pull the TCM wire and remove the connector, all that is left to do is remove the valve body, and there's the conductor plate. Replace it, and most likely you will never need to open your trans again except to do a fluid exchange many tens of thousands of miles latter. The connector, the conductor plate, and the wiring connector in the gear shifter housing are the 3 most common causes of Limp Mode on the 722.6 NAG 1 transmission. I know that's not the point of this video, but to those who may be looking for the source of leaking AND trans problems, might as well do the other repair.

Hi, thanks for the comments, can you tell me what the difference is between the "connector" and the "wiring connector" you mentioned? Thanks
@hellosunshine10905 жыл бұрын
@@frontlinemedia4270 Ok there is an O ring also on the electrical plug on wire harness, right - the one he said MB said could stay. (PS Prob bad advice it should also be changed !) Ok so that whole connection DOES have ATF oil in it, but NONE should go past wire Harness socket plug onto wires themselves. To verify, pull medal heat shield, then carefully pop off that little black plastic wire / socket cover - if there is ATF on that side of socket then you have failed O-rings & should change whole socket out. Your confusion is completely justified - it wasn't clear until he popped off the black wire cover, exposing the "should be dry" side of wires. I'm not a fan of "Fixing what ain't broke" so if my wire harness plug is dry there, I'm NOT digging in further...

By far one of the best DIY videos I've ever seen. I have to change this similar plug on my 300c, which if not mistaken; also uses a 5 speed Mercedes transmission (trust me I'm no mechanic). Thank you so much for doing this, really made my day!!!
@chrisnanfeldt65457 жыл бұрын
Caution: there are several pins on the conductor plate itself that must not be bent or the adapter and the wiring harness plug will break one off. Then you will need a new conductor plate. Take care to spray clean the crap out of the wiring plug "grooves" that the white plastic retaining ring rides in. If super clean from debris, it will plug in as smooth as butter, you may choose to slightly lube the o-rings and then you will not need to "push really hard" and possibly damage your pins on the TCP. Obviously make sure the transmission housing is super clean so the o-rings make the proper seal. Ive had to repeat these steps several times to fix my leak on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo sport. 3.7L v-6.

Mr Diesel Mercedes...your videos are extremely well done and helpful. I have a USA 1998 Benz C280 with the 722.6 The automatic trans is stuck in first or second gear. I am not sure if this is limp mode or not. But I cannot go over 30 mph without the tach running up to 4000 or 4500 rpm's. I removed the valve body and replaced the Conductor Plate with a German OE style version. I did not test any of the shift solenoids. I also replaced the Connector. I just purchased this car, and noticed trans. oil had managed to flow uphill on the wiring harness that runs from the connector and plug up into the passenger side foot well and coated the wires, and also put some fluid into the Transmission Control Module. I have some electronic cleaner, but did not spray it into the plug which pushes into the connector. I did spray cleaner into the plugs which plug into the TCM. I carefully opened the TCM and noted there is trans. fluid residue and small drops inside my TCM. I wiped it off. After all this, my car still won't shift out of first or second gear (whichever it is stuck in). I have tried to shift it manually, but it won't. My check engine light yields code P0715 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit) This speed sensor is part of the Conductor Plate I replaced above the valve body, I believe. I wonder if my TCM is contaminated, or the harness that plugs into the TCM is bad also due to trans. fluid? Someone told me I should be looking at the Gear Selector Switch or Shift Micro Switch, which is part of the Auto Trans. Shift Lever. In the USA, this part is normally called a Neutral Safety Switch. Drinks and liquids can easily fall into the shifter and short out this Shift micro switch on these cars. I wonder if you have suggestions on what direction I should try next ?? THANKS

Jon did you ever figure out the problem cause I'm experiencing the same problem in my 01 ML350 all wheel drive SUV and I'm afraid I am going to f*** it up if I keep driving it
@alannobakht85039 ай бұрын
Jon: there are 6-different Solenoids plugs-into the Conductor Plate. Therefore, as soon as oil flood going into the wiring pins of the connector it shorts the pins (Stupid so called German design) so without any fuse involved it may damage the solenoid and even if you change the Conductor Plate the bad solenoid is still causing your limp-mode.

Just a Heads-up.... Guys if you do not have proper space and proper tools and proper jack DO NOT just the jack the car up and try changing this Transmission Connector. You must provide your win-number to MB dealer to get the right plug part number and it is not like just buy the MB original connector from eBay as we did. In our case it took us 20 minutes just to unplug the connector and 40-minuted to put the 7-milimeter socket on a tiny 7-mm screw inside of the big connector and it was very frustrating-- These people don't tell you how much time they spent, nothing on this connector goes right and easy to pull it out and is not that easy as this person is explaining YOU NEED TO SPRAY CLEAN it before touching it. I helped my friend's car and we spent Saturday and Sunday to get this job done and there were still tons of oil in the connector after started the engine. New O-Ring on new connector was too fat to get in and there was no space for hand to push it hard to get in with hand as this person is explaining and if you hammer it you may break the pins inside and it is a very costly damage so we put the old smaller O-RIng back and pushed it in. So be very careful doing this job yourself; if you have few hundred dollars it would worth it to have a mechanic shop to do it for you believe me.

Check TCM for fluid wick. Fluid will travel up the wire and into the module and connector. If the module still works, it can be opened and PCB and case cleaned with electronics cleaner. Also take cover off connectors and clean pins.

I own a 1999 c280 with the same 722.6 trans. It is a MAJOR pain to replace this part in video. It is a great car and you think the makers could have given a little more space in certain areas. The part mentioned in this video is right behind the exhaust down pipe and with hardly any room. Just like the starter on my car, you have to remove part of the exhaust or remove the body mount. If they made the car even 2 inches wider these wouldn't be a issue, its all apart of MB to keep you going back to their service department. Hate to say but it is the truth the quality in MB sucks with the newer modals . All this electronic bull crap is being forced on the market, its all cheaply made and eventually will not be cost effective to have the car serviced. Like most, my first car was one my parents sold me easy to work on and didn't need a degree in mechanical / electrical engineering. I drove just fine with out all this new crap they have today, never had a accident with my first car. Oh how about the refrigerator that you can check on your tablet of other device. Really? Gee I wonder if the Jello has set up yet, Ill just check with my phone cause my fat ass is to busy scarfing down ding dongs and ho hos watching a info commercial . Ok few, I feel better! +tony montana This is a great video for understanding one source of leaking fluids, and for most Mercedes 722.6 transmissions this is the fix, but for some older vehicles there can be multiple leak sources resulting in the entire bottom of the car covered in transmission fluid. I advise you to prepare to address multiple leak sources at once, and while you are working on it also replace the conductor plate and filter. Transmission work is really difficult, unless you can remove the transmission and perform all repairs on a well-lit workbench. Good luck.
