One of the best tips when doing a rear end/differential change is to ALWAYS remove the fill plug first. I've personally witnessed countless times when friends have drained their fluid only to be surprised that the fill plug is seized. Great video John.

Absolutely great maintenance hints! I have a W109 6.3 but think I can replace the rear gear oil the same way as you showed, so thank you very much for that video 👍

You're very welcome. The rear gear oil is often overlooked, along with bleeding the brake system. Are you a member of our facebook group? Mercedes Maintenance and Mercedes Rescue. Lots of great info and a friendly place. Cheers John.

Good one, always enjoy any classic Mercedes Benz topic. About the drain plug, you can get small magnets from Dollar stores, just fit one in the allen recess of the drain plug and then tape it over for good measure. This will be as good as a plug with magnet on the inside.

Well done. Sometimes that differential oil can really smell bad.

Just a recommendation when draining these spray break clean through both holes will help clean it out

What a great suggestion. I'll do that on my other 108. Cheers John.

There is a filter inside the gasoline tank. Putting an extra filter is not a bad idea as long as the filter inside the tank is clean and clear.

Yes. I have already changed out the strainer in the tank. I thought the inline filter is a good refrence and an extra defense for the pump. As you know those pumps are not cheap:) Cheers John👍

My rear suspension is too high. I think it's because of the compensator. What should I do to lower it? Should the spring be cut?
@mercedesmaintenance.6339 Жыл бұрын
The rear spring has rubber spacer shims at each end. You need to select thinner shims. Did the car originally have the automatic compensator? Switching to a spring can have the effect you described. Cheers John.

Hi, have put in 4 litres of diff oil and its still not overflowing. Manual recommends 2.5 litres. Are you sure its filled to overflowing? Thanks
@mercedesmaintenance.63393 жыл бұрын
Are you sure you've pumped 4 litres? The procedure is to fill until it just starts to drip back out of the hole. Is it the 108?
@markpentony14023 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I checked the MB manual for the W108 and in Section 35, Rear axle, subsection 0, differential fluid, it states the diff fluid capacity is 2.5 litres. My axle tubes were not completely horizontal as the car was raised 2 inches to allow me squeeze under. I removed 1.5 litres to leave it at 2.5 litres and will change again in 6 months and weight the car to ensure the axle tubes are horizontal. I believe I have seals to do, at some stage, as there was a drip over the years. Thanks for the YT channel and enjoy watching the progress. Good job. Mark

@@markpentony1402 Thanks Mark. Keep us posted. I think Kent at Mercedessource has a video also covering this subject on you tube. I remember he said much the same thing. Fill until it drips slightly back out. Cheers John

Yes. From my understanding same process. Cheers John.
