Basically the same engine as on many O 309 minibuses, of course in this case being used in a car the engine is far more relaxed although the sound remains quite similar, being very rough & intrusive when floored. I notice the W115 (whether petrol or diesel) are relatively noisy cars (by modern standards)..only in the W123 onwards then it became quiet enough to be a 'quiet' car in the smaller model ranges of the Mercedes-Benz car sector.

I have a 200D W115. I glued some foam insulation on the inside of the bonnet and renewed all the door ruber gaskets. Of course it doenst reach modern standards ( i mean the car is over 50 years old by now!) but at cruising speeds (70-90 kph) wind and engine noises are totaly bearable also for longer journeys. People unfamiliar with the car might not even think that its a Diesel until i reach lower RPMs or give it a lot of throttle.

The 115 gives that old solid Mercedes feeling. The w123 coming after have a cheaper feeling, they messed up the front, and not the clean lines of the w115. i used to be a w123 fan, but now i think the 115 is a more clean and beautiful design)

The design of the W115 is stunning and better than the later versions. But the most solid and reliable Mercedes is the W124, i think. All the know-how and experience of Mercedes is captured in that one. Especially the early '90 ones.

@@cedricm7350 I grew up driving my parents' 1973 W114. Loved it. Later they bought W123s... they were ok, but lacked something. The 114 was special. Now I have a '95 124 cabriolet. It feels so substantial when compared to other current cars like my 2015 Camry.

@@cedricm7350 W124 built quality and materials are notoriously inferior to previous versions W123 & W114/115. The highest mileage recorded on a Mercedes is for now holded by a Greek taxi driver on a W115 240D...

I currently own a 220D and the e gone noise has actually given me some reassurance, despite the huge oil leak that needs to be fixed. Looks like with a bit of an engine overhaul my 220D could last another 10 years at the least

My first impression back in 74 as a 19 year old allowed to drive my dad's Merc; Heavy, slow, but....how well and solid it's all made and how nice it rides. Gosh, she holds the road better than my Alfa. This is a great car; a real driving machine. No wonder dad likes her so much.

I still use W124 300E which is big step for MB, also car industry in 80s, but W114/115 is probably even bigger in his time. He smash competition easily. Impressive, indestructible, wonderfully built.

Differential jault und die Bremsscheiben haben einen Weg. Aber mit Servo einfach genial. Leider ist der /8 sehr schlecht gedämmt daher würde ich diesen als Benziner und nur mit Automatik empfehlen. Auch wenns n Diesel wird nur automatik.

Yes, the valve clatter is loud at idle and a characteristic of the old Mercedes Benz diesel engine.
