Mercedes w115 220D. Rebuilding OM615 engine.

My prefered engine all time , had such a 220 D W115 from 1973 , it could run 160 km/h very impressed me a lot , and such strong engine , never have to do something , never had such a good car ever

Super work 👍👍 Did you have a high oil consumption? I have a very high oil consumption and rough start on my OM615. What do you think is the problem? Engine has only 57.000 km but maybe it has been standing still for some years.

Before the rebuilding the engine was consuming about a liter oil per 1000km. Another thing was that there was black smoke from the exhaust and in wintertime it was difficult to start. After opening the engine it was clear that it is ready to rebuild. Check this part of the video 19:59. Is it leaking or burning the oil? Check the head gasket and head itself if it is broken on some place first.

Did your OM615 have cylinder liners from the factory or did the block have to be machined?

The block was machined and new cylinder liners were installed. At 11:00 on the video we concluded (by hand :D ) that cylinder liners are worn. Later on at 20:40 I am showing the new ones. That part is not recorded since other shop is doing that. They proved that was the reason for the black smoke from the exhaust :)

Это один из самых сложных и трудоемких моторов всей эволюции двухлитровых моторов. С ним не могут сравниться ни 601. , 604., 611., 646., 651., 640. Больших трудов и финансовых вложений стоит этот мотор, чтобы сделать его тихим , мягким в работе и бездымным. На его фоне 651й и 640 й для "а' и "b" класса - это моторы для разминки.......

goood job but you could safe yourself a ton off work iff you first degreased the engine and pressure washed it i am a BENZ mecanic since 1985 i did lots off these engines OM621 615 616 617 all good engines iff you changed the oil frequently and schecked the valve clearance

It was tough job degreasing the engine at the beginning :) I own it for 5 years and doing oil change and valve adjustment regularly. After overhauling the engine last year, it works smoothly and in the winter starts very easy.

I have an OM616 engine that was in a flatbed i bought. This engine is stuck. Starter barely tips it over .... by hand on the crank: no way. Replace whole engine?

@@egbertgroot2737 Je kunt proberen de motor los te krijgen, mij is het ooit gelukt met een 200D die ik inclusief de auto voor vijfentwintig gulden had gekocht. Ik heb er pakweg 10.000km mee gereden voor hij de geest gaf. De oliedrukmeter kwam op een gegeven moment bij 3000 toeren niet meer boven 0,5 bar en ‘s nachts om drie uur tussen Lauwersoog en Anjum gaf de motor de geest. Toen moest ik drie kwartier lopen voordat ik weer thuis was want mobiele telefoons waren toen nog zeldzaam en bij gebrek aan passerende auto’s zat met iemand meeliften er niet in…😅

@@egbertgroot2737 Succes! Je moet er een beetje geluk mee hebben, de laatste 220D die ik in destijds m'n 85-63-SX heb gelepeld was echt super. Zelfs bij -10 was het starten en lopen en het olieverbruik verwaarloosbaar.

I have the same engine 220D, was running perfectly. over winter i accidentally left coolant with almost no anti-freeze in it. it definitely froze solid, but the radiator actually survived. however the engine now produces loads of white smoke, probably water into cylinder, although i messed up the pump timing too, because i initially thought it was that so dismantled the pump 3 times. before deciding it probably cracked the head or block. anyone got any idea where the most likely place it has cracked ? and if there is any other possibility ?

It is possible head or block to be cracked. The only way to see the crack is to dismantle the head and fine sand it. I had the same issue, spent entire day sanding and noticed the crack near one of the valve holes.
