Hi Scott Good news. I got enough charge in the battery to crank the motor. I then decided to go for a drive to charge on the alternator and to check that everything was operating. When I put the car in reverse, up popped the rear camera view! All is working to plan. I've put the charger back on just to get everything topped up. We are very happy to do this job. $40 with all parts, wire connectors etc With your videos to follow, the job was easy. I don't think I''ll ever notice that I can't watch videos on my ipad in the glove box (if that was what the extra cable was) Thanks again for your excellent videos. A true socialising of technology leading to the saving of a fortune

Hi Mr. Elliott, I just wanted to write you a HUGE thank you for posting your videos. After watching your video about 10 times and your video about removing the COMMAND Navigation Head Unit about 10 times, I ordered a back up camera with the adapter. I carefully followed your instructions and after everything was done and put back together, I started the car, put it in reverse and what a wonderful site, a bright, clear view of at least 20 feet or maybe more appeared on my screen. I cannot say thank you enough. I do not understand why Mercedes did not include this as standard equipment on these cars. It literally cost me $40 US, plus my time, which was about 2 hours. I would never have attempted it, had I not came across your videos. Thanks again, Don - USA - 2010 C300 Sport

Hi Scott, Just a quick thank you. I ordered the parts from Hong Kong, which took 3-4 weeks, and then followed your instructions. They were easy to follow and it all worked perfectly first time & took about an hour. Cost me no more than £70 including the import duty. A tremendous saving on the dealership prices. Thanks for taking the time to post this video and responding to my previous message. Really appreciated. Thanks.

Scott, I finally had time to install the back-up camera in my 2011 W204. I followed the steps in your video and the camera works perfectly! I decided to fish the cable through the driver's side (LH drive) as you recommended and it was very easy so I would recommend anyone else doing this to go the same way. The only drawback is that the iPod connection cable also uses the Aux input so to install the camera I had to lose the iPod interface. I hardly used it so no big deal. Thank you so much for your videos, they are so helpful to all of us who like to tinker with our cars!

Thanks for your kind words Mark. I'm pleased I was able to help you beat the system and take control. Paying the equivalent of 700 pounds for a reverse camera system is highway robbery of the first order. My $AUD25 high definition camera is still performing faultlessly. As I've said before you don't build wealth handing over vast sums of cash to car dealers/repairers to do what is often very straight forward work. Kind regards, Scott

Thanks for this most helpful post (as well as how to remove the COMMAND unit). I followed your instructions to the letter and VOILA - it worked. My only initial problem was with the 1st camera I put in - type CMOS and PAL encoding. I got a picture on the screen but with wavy lines. I then researched a little and ordered a CCD camera with NTSC encoding - everything is perfect. With the cost of 2 cameras and the FAKRA cable, the whole job still came in at under NZ$ 100,00! MB here told me that on my model it was not possible to install a camera - little do they know! Happy camper here in NZ. Thanks a ton Scott!!!

Hi, There is a multi media cable that you can purchase on eBay quite cheaply that has a usb port, aux video input plus iPod etc. Sounds like you've got the iPod connection already. I've just posted a link in the video description to the camera I purchased as requested by another viewer. I don't know of anything else you can plug into the head unit. I'd highly recommend the camera as a safety feature and a very cheap upgrade. I've heard Mercedes may have changed the Eng. Menu on later cars.

I'll have a look and get back to you. I would think the cigar point would be the best. If your handy with a soldering iron there will be a power supply going into the head unit you could tap into that may be easier to get to. Do you have soldering iron and a multi meter?

Hi Scott. Thanks or your previous reply. The job was very straight froward. I made the mistake of ignoring your instruction to wire into the 12 volt feed at No. 71. I wired to the reverse lamp wire given that my model uses incandescent bulb technology. When wired to the reverse lamp feed it worked fine until the engine was running - then the video just crapped out or flickered madly. I guess the CAN Bus send some sort of pulse signal so I reverted to your instruction and all is well. Anyway keep up with the tech videos. Cheers Graham
@ScottElliott15211 жыл бұрын
If you have the COMAND APS you should only need to connect the Video cable to the green Fakra connector with the adaptor. I assume you have the camera mounted at the back and powered up from pin 71 in the rear fuse box. So the video signal is present at the HU all the time. When you go into the Engineering menu you tell it to show the video signal when reverse is selected.
@ScottElliott15211 жыл бұрын

Hi Scott yes the option is there in Engineering mode it says no backup camera installed. Only one thing I am afraid of by connecting the wires Earth and power, it may burn or damage the circuit board. Running a wire from back to front is easy....
@ScottElliott15210 жыл бұрын
bosshtc You're worrying too much! But it is better to be cautious so you're a good risk manager. Connect the earth wire first. Fuse #71 has no power with the ignition off. See my recent comment in reply to a question about power connection from Rocawearkid2005.If you're really concerned you could always disconnect the battery before making any connections.
@ScottElliott15210 жыл бұрын
bosshtc Strip about 5mm from the end of the wire. Remove the fuse and use a multimeter or test light to determine which socket is on the "other side of the fuse". To make it easy for you ... the fuse is horizontal and it's the blade closest to the rear of the car where the wire should go. That is you may as well have the fuse protecting the camera circuit. With the wire in the correct socket push the fuse back in and it will sandwich the wire in place. Look carefully at the video from 10.00 and you can see Fuse#71 with the wire coming out of the rear blade. So you pull the fuse, poke the wire into the socket where the rear blade was and put the fuse back in on top of the wire there by sandwiching the wire into the fuse socket. I can't explain it any better than that I'm afraid.

Finding a ground point is usually not an issue. You can always just find a screw into metal and connect to that. And of course you will be able to leave the wireless transmitter behind the glove box somewhere. Then I guess you will have to pull the AV cable through to the COMAND from the transmitter. Good luck with it all and take your time.

Good on you for wanting to have a crack at doing the job. I'll put a link in the video description for the adaptor cable you will need. If you got any questions when you get going feel free to ask. The best way to tackle these projects is not be in a rush and do the planning and thinking first.

Angel please read the comments on this video as I've covered the issues many times. Is your camera NTSC? Have you turned off the COMAND and rebooted. Have you connected to Fuse 71?. That's some of them.
@ScottElliott1529 жыл бұрын
Angel ... thanks for checking it out. Isn't it disappointing when things are not done correctly? Was it a professional? The camera needs to be powered up all the time the car is on. The video signal is then present and is switched by the Comand when selecting reverse. The cut cable is strange. That maybe a dodgy connection. The best way to sort that out is to cut that piece out and install male & female RCA connectors to each end and plug them together. Hope these ideas help. Report back on your problem solving. Regards, Scott

Good luck with it and let us know how it goes. There's nothing wrong with the $30 tag light replacement cameras on eBay. They have a Sony CCD chip. Couple of tips: boot/trunk line clips - I pried them out using a plastic tool. I found the right way to do this is to pry out the OUTER part of the clip first then the rest of the housing. Hope this helps others. Other thing is the smoothing off of the camera housing. I know you show it in the clip but I couldnt see it. For others, here's a picture: h**p://i.imgur.c0m/pmvnw7V.png Simply use box cutters as Scott said to cut off bottom parts of ridge. It will then fit flush. Credit to Scott!

I got the link ... thanks. The Merc Upgrade site is handy. If I was installing a wireless camera I'd take the power from the glove box power cigar socket as I think it's a safer option than cutting into wires behind the COMAND. I'm thinking once the COMAND and glove box are out you should be able to push a stiff wire through (like coat hanger wire) and then tape the electrical wire onto the end and pull it through. The GSXR600K7 is a good machine. Us Merc bikers have to look after each other.

I had a look behind the COMAND unit today and there is no 12V source switched to the ignition. I think the safest way to get power to the receiver for your wireless camera system would be to tap into the power cigar socket in the glove box. That is only active when the key is on. I may make another video of how to get to that. I've made another video today on how to remove the COMAND screen.

Hi again Scott, I’ve been right through my installation. I have power (tested) from position 71, a good earth (tested ), cable through to HU via Fakra connector, been into the Engineering menu and selected SRVC, activated by Reverse, come back out via END, to find the “check entire surroundings” message and “BACK” over a black screen. It’s not in my nature to give up, but I’m close to it!

ok. try the other camera options in the engineering menu (EM). Try both NTSC and PAL options in the EM. Also check the camera is providing a video signal by connecting the AV cable to another screen like a hand held video camera. Perhaps the camera isn't working. It's happened to other people who've watched this video. Also after making all connections turn the HU off and on again.

Hi Jesus ... I'm not familiar with the basic audio system (Audio 20 I understand). However, once in Engineering menu try this: Go to (option 7, sub menu 7) HU parameter, the camera might be under option 17. Three types will come up: SRVC, DRVM OR DRVM-psc. You may have to try all of these to see which works. The camera with the Sony CCD chip works on all these options.

Thanks Scott. I've got both a soldering iron and mm. Instead of soldering, I have successfully used dual connecting blocks to piggy-back new connections onto existing. I did this when adding speakers in the SUV and it's been fine for many years. I did hear it's dangerous and can cause fires but I connected it very securely and then covered with electricians tape. Maybe I can do the same for power connection and ground? Thanks Scott!!

Hello Mr. Scott, first of all I wanted to say "hi" from CA, USA and thank you for the great DIY videos you made. I followed your directions, didn't work at first thinking maybe I ordered the wrong fakra adapter (because mine was actually Green fakra "E" type instead of recommended "Z"). Anyway after couple days - out of the blue- it works. However, I have a problem, the backup camera goes on display only when my car is not in motion. It'll only display when it's in Video mode and not in R gear even though I checked the box in the Setting menu. Lastly, I think I know the answer but I was hoping you would know a work around this... when my car is in motion it'll show the "black screen with the warning note that video not display to prevent distraction". Do you think all these issues can be solve by getting the right female RCA plug to female fakra "Z" adapter? Once again, Thank you for all your time. I'm really appreciated. - Joseph
@ScottElliott1528 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Nguyen Hi Joseph. I've been to CA and it's a top place. You're problem has me perplexed. You certainly need to have the correct RCA adapter cable so sort that out first. I've found the later model W204's with the COMAND do have different sub menus in the Engineering mode. It may require thorough investigation of the different setting under HU Parameters to get it right. My car was an August 2008 German build.

Rocawearkid2005 Yes strip about 5mm from the end of the wire. Remove the fuse and use a multimeter to determine which socket is on the "other side of the fuse". Without the fuse one side will have 12V when the ignition is on. Poke the wire into the other side socket. That is you may as well have the fuse protecting the camera circuit. With the wire in the correct socket push the fuse back in and it will sandwich the wire in place.

Hi Scott You may recall my car has Aux plug going into APS, where you connected FAKR plug, so I ordered an adapter to take video + stereo input from Aux extension in glove box. When I plugged camera into it and accordingly set up Comand Menu - I got nothing, except after selecting Aux in Comand, I got low buzzing sound. Hi Cyndi ... yes you need to buy that adaptor cable. You can pick them up on eBay cheaply. Also have you watched the other video I made on how to remove the COMAND as that shows the adaptor and where to connect it? There's a green female Fakra socket on the back of the unit and you plug the male Fakra adaptor into that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqnNpGqNmJiHkK8

Hi Scott, hope you have been well. I am in the process of installing a reversing camera (following your instructional video very carefully) As already mentioned I am going a slight different tack and have installed the camera (non-number plate light type) slightly more right into an existing rectangular portal where the camera sits very well .At this stage fed the power feed cable into position (rear right hand side fuse cluster) for termination at a later stage . Anyway that part is complete and now I will start feeding the video signal cable towards the front of the car. The part where you feed the cable thru the back seat and under the trims right up the the removal fuse panel trim plate (Drivers right hand side)on the dash seems pretty straight forward. At this point just a bit lost on how to feed the cable further into the interior of the dash and over the steering wheel towards the Command module. My obvious question is how you did this? I would be guessing that you had to remove the bottom plastic trim panel from underneath the dash and then feed the cable thru, if so how do you remove this panel? I have taken off the passenger panel when I had to change the cabin filter, just wondering if it is as easy as that for the drivers side. Please advise.

I have 2015 Mercedes-Benz C180 (W204) Coupe, which doesn't come with a reverse camera. I shopped around for a aftermarket reverse camera and they're telling me it will cost $ 1200 - $ 1300 because it requires an interface module to make the head unit able to communicate with the aftermarket camera. I'm surprised that you were able to buy and install everything for just a few bucks. Very clever.

There's a lot of misinformation out there ... possibly spread by Dealers. Does your C180 have the COMAND system with the flip out screen like mine? If so it's already set up for a reverse camera. I have a $20 eBay camera and it works fine.

Hi Scott Things could be going better. Got the head unit out and (eventually) got the video cable past the wheel and ready to install. Problem #1 there already was a thin cable in the fakra? socket. This headed off towards the glove box and so I assumed that it allowed me to play videos from an ipad connected to the glove box outlet.. I got this out and put in the fakra adaptor but it is jammed up tight on the antenna cable ( I think) plug. Turned off the system and waited for a few minutes. When I went back. The entire system wouldn't work. No electricity, nothing. Checked the battery; 11.1 volts. So now have it on the charger. I can only assume that having cabin lights on, etc drained the battery. I hope so. I am now charging the battery and will keep you informed

Thanks David. You can only have a reverse camera or multi media cable in that socket. You can't have both. On later models you can. My fakra plug is jammed against that large connector

Tariq ... How long have you been working on your back up camera ... it seems like weeks? I don't understand your current question. Have you installed the video cable from the head unit to the trunk? Have you installed the camera in place of one of the tag lights? If so you connect the camera to the end of the video cable in the trunk and you connect the other end of the video cable to the Fakra adaptor and plug it into the back of the head unit. If there's already a connection into the Fakra connector it's probably for an AUX video cable. You can either have AUX video or back up camera not both. So pull it out and connect the camera. Hope that helps you. I can't explain it in simpler terms. Did you make your own hook tools as I explained in the video? I thought I explained it clearly enough. I have to be careful with some questions received as I've had Mercedes dealers or people in the industry try to wind me up. I'm showing how simple some of these things are to DIY and certainly the dealers don't like it. Kind regards, Scott

Tariq Ayoub Tariq ... if it's the input for AUX video it's probably going to the glove compartment. Regardless, if you want a back up camera you'll have to disconnect the current cable and connect your camera to that AUX input.As far as I know none of these cars were pre-wired for a back up camera however the head unit is programmed for it and only needs to be activated once your camera is in place. Maybe the cable is a previous owners attempt to install a camera ... who knows. Maybe it's a previous owners AUX video cable that's been routed to a little known access point. Regards, Scott

Ahamed Aslam Ahamed it's no trouble for me. I enjoy helping people solve these problems especially when they're in other countries ... it's good for internatioanl relationships! I recall now after making the changes in the HU the car needs to be switched off and left for a short and then turned on for the HU to reboot and accept the changes. Glad it's working now. You must be pleased with your handy work. I'll put a note on the video about the reason for fuse #71. There's a delay when turning the camera on as that needs to boot up. The way the system works is the HU has the camera video signal present always and the signal is switched to the screen instantly you select reverse. You'll notice there's no delay when selecting reverse. If you have it connected to the reverse light feed the camera has to power up and it takes many seconds for the image to appear on the screen. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. Some pictures would be good as I'd like to see the different mounting position. Kind regards to you in sunny Sri Lanka, Scott

Right. Everything works great but mine has four small LEDs on the camera which stay on all of the time because the camera is connected to fuse 71. Not good. I guess I need to install a relay between the fuse 71 and the camera so the LEDs will only come on in reverse. I don't want them on all the time. May need to switch out back up camera if that doesn't work.

Hi Scott. It seems you had the factory camera, but maybe it failed for you to install a new aftermarket camera? Did you consider just replacing the existing camera and save all the additional wiring? I'm hoping you can advise if it is possible to use the existing camera wiring and install a new aftermarket camera as that would save a lot of work. (Or at least test if the factory camera is dead or not?) Thanks in advance, CZ.

+Con Zeritis Con you must have misread my video or I didn't explain properly. I didn't have the factory reverse camera. I was quoted about $AUD1500 and thought that was crazy. I bought the original camera and Fakra/RCA adapter cable on eBay for $30. I ran the cabling. That camera was working perfectly for a couple of years from memory but I noticed a higher definition version of the camera became available for about $25 so I bought it and swapped it over. The original cabling from my first installation was used. I don't know if the original wiring can be used. You'd have to remove the boot/trunk lining and see what's there to make the decision. I suspect it can although the connectors maybe different. There will be a power cable and a video signal cable. The HU end is probably ok as that's already connected. By the way the first camera is still going well in my W639 Vito van as after swapping it out from the W204 I stuck it in the van.

+Nora Grossman ... Good work Nora and thanks for the compliment. i used my multimeter to check when Fuse 71 had power. It's only live when the ignition is on. I can't recall the circuit fuse 71 protects. The camera draws such little power I decided to use that circuit. The fuse card data is usually stored with the spare wheel. Have a look at that and it may tell what fuse 71 protects. You want that camera booted up and sending a signal to the COMAND whenever the car is on. It's the COMAND that switches the video signal to the screen when you select reverse. With the positioning I was able to use some small pieces of cable tie to wedge it upwards or downwards.

Hi Scott, Great video. My problem is that I've tried several cameras (3) and power connection points but regardless the picture keeps 'fickering'/jumping and the picture is B&W although camera says colour. Just wondering if you had come across this problem before and any suggestions as to how I can overcome it? Regards, Jon
@ScottElliott1529 жыл бұрын
+Jon Hurley Hi Jon ... that must me very annoying. I've come across a similar problem when connecting a back up camera to my W639 Vito. In that case I connected the power for the camera from the reverse light. I reduced the flickering by installing a capacitor across the positive & negative wires as a filter. It's still not 100% so I've got more R&D work to do. I'm assuming you have your camera connected to fuse 71 which is powered whenever the ignition is on? That's the correct way as the COMAND does the switching of the video signal. It's possibly RF interference being absorbed by that 5 metres of AV cable winding it's way from the back to the COMAND HU. You could try a cylindrical ferrite filter over the video cable. They're usually in two halves and they clamp over the cable. They absorb RF interference. I have one on mine. Put it at the COMAND end. You can buy them from your electronics shop or pinch one off a USB cable you have lying around. They often have them on the end just before the USB plug that goes into the device.

Hi Scott, Tried power connections via fuse 71 and the reversing light. I'll try routing the power via capacitors and let you know. Thanks for your help. Regards, Jon

John use fuse 71 as you want the power to the camera whenever the car is on. Don't use the reversing light. The capacitor is easy to install as you're putting it across the positive and negative power supply. I'd definitely get yourself a ferrite RF filter for the video cable. They're cheap at your local electronics shop. Regards, Scott

+Scott Elliott Hi Scott, what capacitors did you use previously when this happened on the Vito? Does it matter where the RF filter is located i.e. nearer the camera or input to display unit? Regards, Jon
@ScottElliott1529 жыл бұрын
Jon I used a 16V 2200uF capacitor I had in my spares box. The RF filter is best placed at the end close to the display. Regards, Scott

Hi, thanks for this video...one of the best out there! Would you know if the radio on a GLK 350 2012 be the same as the one on a C350 2012 in terms of connections in the back? Also, the removal of the unit should be fairly similar right? One last question, my GLK is not installed with an auxiliary/iPod port (i.e. no media interface), can I hook a cable for this at the same time while the unit is out and run it out of the glove compartment? Thanks so much...cheers!

Jean Longpre Hi Jean. Sorry for the late reply but I missed seeing it. I don't know for sure about the connections on the back of a GLK350 but I would guess they're similar or the same as would be the removal.I'm assuming you have the navigation and COMAND system?Once the head unit is out if it has the multi media interface sockets then you'll be able to plug the media cables in and route them through to the glove box. There should be a removable panel in the glove box for the cables. Regards, Scott

Hi Scott, I have a w204 facelift UK 2011- with the satnav screen always on view in dash, not the pop up one, I installed it all as shown and changed all the settings as shown, but all I get is a black screen (with check surroundings) when I put car in reverse but no picture sadly, any ideas as I have rechecked everything twice, when you say reboot command do you mean turn car off and walk away for a while or am I missing something, kind regards and great "how to" by the way, Michael

+Scott Elliot , any clue would be good please ?? -- UPDATE 14/04/2016 , don't worry got all the test equipment and worked out what was wrong, there is a difference in the facelift w204 command unit that meant the cabling had to be connected differently, thank's for video though as would not have attempted or indeed successfully fitted all this without you excellent work and strip down process, thanks again Scott and please keep them coming, regards Michael

Hi Scott, I have installed a camera in a 2012 C63 and followed all of your instructions but the camera doesn't engage when I put it in the reverse gear. Do you have any advice why this might be. All the settings seem to be the same in my engineering mode to yours. Many thanks, Jason

Hi Jason. Make sure your Video AUX is turned on ... at 14.31on the video Item (4). If you've also turned on "activate in reverse gear" in system settings then it all should work. I'll put a note on the video at 14.31 to remind viewers to make sure Video AUX is turned on. Hope this helps, Scott

MrScott52 I double checked it and Video AUX is switched on. Audio AUX is off and does not allow me to select that option. I'm pretty sure I have followed your instructions entirely but no luck unfortunately. We originally wired the live to camera to the reverse lamp wire, we then changed it after looking at your video, it then worked briefly, the camera engaged but not picture. we then tried changing the settings from SRVC to the the other options and it stopped engaging again. I will keep playing with it to see if I have some luck. Thank you for your help.

Jason Pelosi It's a process of elimination. Do you have video camera with an AV outlet? If so plug it into the AV cable that goes to the head unit and see if you get an image. Also wire the positive of the camera to fuse #71 in the rear compartment and the negative should be grounded. If you have a multimeter check you get 12V between #71 and ground with the ignition on. There will be no power there unless the ignition is on so make sure your key is in the right position.

MrScott52 Hi Scott, We have tried everything but no luck. We now get the screen for reverse camera come up but no picture. We have tried 3 different cameras and a video camera. We have also tried connecting the camera straight to live and still nothing. I think it must be something to do with it being the 2010> head unit. If you have any ideas I would appreciate it.

Jason Pelosi Jason maybe you're right with the >2010 HU. The Benzworld forum is a good source of information so why don't you have a look in there. It's worth registering. www.benzworld.org I'm sure someone will know. I've run out of ideas.
