Thank you for this fantastic video Scott! :-) For anyone trying to do this on the newer version of this knob, the one with the 12 vertical lines around it (used in the W204 2011 facelift and newer models like the W212): THE METAL RING IS NOT REMOVABLE AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO, IT IS PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO THE KNOB. The way to access the screw is to ONLY REMOVE THE CAP of the knob. It is lightly glued on, so warm it up with a hair dryer first and then use a suction cup to lift it out. Do not attempt to pry it out as there's no gap and you will damage its metal top and/or the metal ring.

Scott, I can't thank you enough. Your video is excellent. I'm an avid DIYer on my MB but never would have figured out how to disassemble this controller without breaking it, in particular the knob ring at the start. To encourage others when tackling the first step I'll mention that the knob's outer "grip ring" and its inner base are real metal, not plastic, and I used a tiny flat head screw driver to merely pry very carefully but intently just at it's edge, as you've demonstrated. You're my COMAND knob DIY hero! Please keep sharing the great vids and fighting the good fight against waste and high prices.

+John Parsons Gee thanks John ... i feel very humbled! I'm pleased I could help out. I hate seeing fellow citizens being gouged, raped and burnt at the stake by the dealer network. I also despise the waste and planned obsolescence in this consumer society. It's a complete contradiction to the notion we should be reducing our carbon footprint when corporations are forcing people to buy replacements because they've been designed to fail early. Step of soap box ... LOL Regards, Scott

We're on the same page John ... I think guys like you and I have to spread the word and step on that soap box and remind people how twisted the consumer society has become. It's getting people to take a moment to think about what they're doing. I'm just preparing a video on retrofitting factory cruise control to the W639 Vito. Dealer quote about $1500 for the kit, installation and activation with STAR. We did the retrofit to my mates Vito in 1.5 hours for a total cost of about $60! I have STAR 2011-01. We plugged the van in and it took 5 minutes to activate. We drove out of the man cave and it worked perfectly ... both the CC and the speed limiting. The CC stalk is a common part used in many models including the W203 so it's easy to get from wrecking/breaking online eBay stores. You don't need the factory retrofit kit. Also there's no SCN coding or anything fancy to activate ... which is what the dealers tell you. You go into STAR and basically turn it on. I'd better stop because I'm starting to rant! :-)

Can't thank you enough Scott for this awesome video.The dealership here in Toronto quoted me $CAD 1400 to fix my 2011 E350. I stopped going to the dealership as soon as my warranty expired 3 years ago. I'm a DIY'er and love the satisfaction of fixing things. Your video helped me save that money and I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. The next thing on my list is to fix the auto seat belt tensioner that has been bust for over 3 years now. A big THANK YOU once again from Canada.
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Harold from Canada. I was quoted a similar amount by my local dealer plus a whole lot of nonsense about removing the dashboard and having to reprogram the car! That's when I decided to take control. I've since replaced the shaft with a 3d printed item so I expect that will last me out. Also know that Australia was singled out to be sacrificed on the global warming alter. I've never witnessed such extreme media reporting that no doubt extended to Canada. The world media created a lot of damage to our economy by scaring the living daylights out of potential tourists. People overseas thought the entire country was in flames when it was a small percentage in macro terms. The recent bushfires were bad but they weren't unprecedented and weren't the worst. Just over 10 years ago we lost about 170 people during the annual fire season. Australia is a land of heat, droughts, fires and flooding rains. It's always been this way since recorded history. Just thought I'd let a Canadian know what's going on from the perspective of an Australian on the ground. Also the bush is recovering quickly as many species require the fire and smoke to germinate. Some parts are really green now but the MSM will never report it. Pass it on to your friends and work colleagues.

Scott, great video. Thanks! I replaced it with the aluminum shaft sold on eBay for US$30. This way, you would never have to worry about it breaking again. As a side note, ALL 10 T10 torx screws need to be removed prior to separating the 2 halves. You also need to purchase an integrated T10 screwdriver as the bits will not fit in the small holes.

Alex thanks for the feedback. Yes the alloy shaft will last the life of the car so is the easiest option now. Of course no one was selling them when I made the video. If mine breaks again it will be the alloy version for me.

Many thanks Scott. Another one here who has saved a load of money by following your instructions. I decided to buy the replacement spindle from a guy in Germany who creates them on a 3D printer (check Ebay). I also replaced the spindle in-situ, thus avoiding the need to cut any cables. Took about half an hour. I also followed your other instructions for fixing the rear light earthing issue. That also took half an hour. I dread to think how much these two simple jobs would have cost at the main stealers. If you're ever in Southampton, England, I owe you a pint.
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Spencer Thanks Andrew. I love English beer ... the first time I had a pint in Woodstock just out of Oxford I couldn't get the grin off my face. I saw the guy selling the 3D printed shafts. That's the way to go for sure. The earthing issue is a disgrace. MB won't admit there's a problem. I read on the Benzworld forum of a guy who lost his two cars, BMW motorcycle and house because his W204 went up in flames due to the rear tail light.
@slatermethuen
@slatermethuen 9 жыл бұрын
+Scott Elliott The earthing issue is a disgrace. I noticed a burning smell coming from my boot. When I looked closer I found that the overheating earth cable had melted through the case of the medical kit. This area is close to the petrol filler... There seems to have been a recall in the US, but when I contacted MB UK customer services they denied there was a known issue. They gave me an incident form to fill out and may have have done a goodwill fix if I'd pushed things. However, I figured they'd just replace the light unit without fixing the earth cable so I reckoned it would be easier and safer to fix it myself. Do you think I should also do the LHS of the car as well? That side doesn't seem to show any visible signs of overheating.
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 9 жыл бұрын
yes definitely do both sides. In the US & Canada all they do is replace the burnt and melted parts with the exact same parts. That's what they do in your case. If they changed anything they'd be admitting there's a design fault. When you read the text of the US/Canada recall they're saying the problem is due to the environment the car's being used in thus they've turned it around to the owner. It has their corporate lawyers grubby mits all over it.

Excellent video. Clear steps to repair the unit. I did not cut the wires when removing the unit for repair, instead peeled back the carpet on the console sidewalls and unhooked them from the retaining hook. I later used gorilla tape to secure it inside the console area as you suggested in separate video. The center screw on knob was a Torx #8 for mine ( W204 2011 or GLK 350). I used the reinforcement method with toothpicks cut to size and applied the epoxy to center shaft overlapping the break point to provide continuity and additional strength. Reinstalled and working!

+Alex kurcewicz Thanks Alex ... in the distant past being thrifty and modest with what money you had was considered good taste and a virtue. This planned obsolescence policy is unethical and immoral considering we're supposed to be reducing our carbon footprint. MB are selling these COMAND controllers in Australia for nearly a $1000. They have no incentive to change the design. Perfectly good controllers with nothing but a broken internal shaft are probably ending up in landfill. I can't stand the hypocrisy. Regards, Scott

Thanks Scott, textbook guide on fixing the COMAND controller on my C250 Wagon. I bought an aftermarket aluminium shaft for A$23 on eBay rather than glue the sheared plastic shaft. The advice to cut the ribbon wire, pull through and resolder worked well. I staggered the cuts by about 2cm down the ribbon to provide a clear section to solder and heat shrink the individual wires and then a single sheath over the whole repair.

I could not have done this job without your video - thank you. I am actually still in the middle of the process, waiting for the epoxy to harden. I just wanted to comment that some things were slightly different in my 2009 W204 (US version). Most notably, I tore the cable apart when I pulled the housing out of the center console. It did not take much force, and once the unit was removed, I found out why. The ribbon cable was wound around a plastic tab at the bottom of the opening and did not give.I had to unwind the broken piece (luckily I had not cut it off yet) and only then was I able to pull it out from the shifter side. Because the ribbon was severed close to the housing, I just removed the short piece from the connector on the circuit board and refitted the long piece to the connector. Now the cable is one whole piece and no soldering was needed.

+Christian Donner ... Good on you Christian for having a go. Your experience may help others with the USA version when they read the comments. Good thinking shortening the cable a small amount so it's all in one piece. 3D printing a new shaft is the way to go now. There's a guy in Germany selling them for about $25 on eBay. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Welle-Stift-Stick-passt-fur-Mercedes-W204-W212-Comand-Controller-Drehknopf/231689507306?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3Daea6bb27c04d4abf843f5de79112ce2e%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D151562840872

3D printers are getting more affordable by the day. I'm considering getting one soon as it's the way of the future. Once I've got it I'll do a design for a new shaft and put the G code file in Dropbox for others to use with their 3D printers. I would prefer to help others take control so I wouldn't be printing new shafts and trying to sell them to make a buck. I can get a well regarded 3D printer for about $650 delivered which is tempting.

+Scott Elliott and they should under normal circumstances. they don't break just from turning the knob - there is very little torsional force. I am pretty sure mine was broken by a mechanic who leaned on it. the shop denied it and I could not prove it. my tip for older w204s - make them sign off that the ignition switch and the command button work before dropping off the car for service.

Brilliant instructions. I couldn't get the ribbon and I didn't want to cut it because my soldering skills are a bit rusty. So I unhooked the first part of the ribbon connector like you showed and then did the rest of the repair in the car with the the circuit board still attached to the ribbon. Hope this helps people in the same boat who don't want to have to go through the hassle of desoldering the ribbon. Now the scroll wheel works a charm.

Great video. I purchased a new aluminum stem and it works well. A few hints 1) the cable is a real pain. I did not want to cut it and ended up pulling it towards the control unit and taking the control unit in the car (which worked well - just be careful to not loose any parts 2) take a picture of the pieces in the stem/joystick, they need to be aligned in a certain way when you reassemble.

Hi Scott, thanks for the very useful video. I've just finished assembling the unit and will try it first thing in the morning. I hope it works. The video was very informative. My only comment is regarding the cable. I followed your advice and cut it instead of trying to remove it only to find out that removing it was far, far easier than soldering the thin cables. I should have checked first. Other than that, no complaints and thanks once again. (Forgot to mention that my car is a 2010 GLK 350 4Matic so that might be why it was easier to remove the cable than to cut it). I've since installed it back and it works perfectly. Thanks a lot!

Hello Scott and thank you for a great video! I tried to do it in my w204 but I have a small problem. When I try to separate the two parts of the unit, they just won't come off (4:21 of your video). I guess I have to remove all 10 torx screws from the back, but I wanted to ask you first! Thanks again!

Hi Scott, thanks for your video. I managed to repair the one on my car easily after watching. A couple of things I did differently though, I didn't like the thought of cutting the wires so I dismantled in the car, once you unplug the switch you can pull enough of the cable through to allow you to work on it, just have to be careful not to drop the screws or springs into the console. Also, I cut 4 grooves into the top piece with a grinder and 1mm disc so I could place small nail shafts across the join for 'steel reinforcement'. Once I buried the nails in epoxy, I can guarantee that shaft will outlast the car. Had to glue it in two stages for this, the initial glue joined it back together then the second to embed the nails. I'm amazed the shafts last as long as they do, there was barely any plastic linking the top and bottom pieces on mine.

Thanks Dan. I'm glad you were able to fix the scrolling function and I was of some help. I also cringed when I cut the wires but after spending about 30 mins trying to free it from whatever it is that holds it under the console I'd had enough! I gritted my teeth closed my eyes and ... snip! Soldering back together was easy and I've had no issues at all in over a year. As I was doing the R&D to find out what to do to fix the problem I had to remove it so I could pull it apart on the bench. If I had to do it again now I can see the merit in dismantling in the car as I know exactly what to do. Kind regards, Scott

Good news well done. My shaft broke again a couple of months ago. A friend made me a new one using his 3D printer. I notice eBayers with 3D printers are selling them for about the same price as the alloy versions. I'd be concerned with wear having metal on plastic. Plastic on plastic would be better. Perhaps run your alloy shaft for a while, dismantle and report back with your findings. Regards, Scott.

I just completed this fix on my 2011 E350 sedan. (just of out of warranty) Others suggested I contact MB for good will to cover it, but whats the point if they are just going to install another part that will fail again in 4 years. Now, it will never break ;-) The only part that was different than the C class was getting the module out was a real pain. I had to shave about 1mm of plastic off of the chassis to get it out. Other than that, worked like a charm. Dealer wanted $180USD for the part and almost $300USD for labor. This fix cost me about $5.99USD in Epoxy and about 2 hours of time, not including curing time of course. The only tip I'd like to add: When removing the module from the vehicle, I did not need to cut the wire. The wire harness is completely accessible, just in front of the module. On the bottom of the white wire harness, there is a little tab. Just push that toward the passenger side while applying pressure on it toward the front of the car and viola! popped right off.. Went back on in the same manner. I used a tiny L shaped awl tool to do this. Thank you SOOOO much for the how-to. Really was a money saver!

Thanks for the tip I'll check that out and see if it's the same on the W204 C Class. I agree it's better to fix the thing properly. Also it's more hassle and takes longer stuffing around getting your car to and from the dealers. Glad my experience could save you some money. Regards, Scott

I had some issue gluing the pieces together since the glue i have chosen did not keep the pieces together as strong as you did (i also did the matches trick) in the second try i reglued it back as before but additionally i have added a very thin layer of plumbing tape (strong and thin) Everything put back together and seems to be working fine. I didnt wait overnight for the glue (only around 4 hours). i am not touching the car again until tomorrow.

@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 9 жыл бұрын
marinos michael Thanks Marinos. I'm pleased to help people save some cash. I hate seeing people pay huge sums of money for things that can be easily fixed. It's good for the environment, our carbon footprint and the planet to extend the life of an item. There's nothing like a retired Engineer on a crusade! The choice of glue is important as those Poly Propylene plastics are very difficult to bond. The plumbers tape is a good idea. With the facelift model I'd speculate the same problem will arise after four years unless they've made a design change. With the dealers and their supplier doing a roaring trade selling replacement control knobs for huge prices they have no incentive to modify the component to make it last. Your friends 2011 C Class is getting to the time when it will fail. If it does help him pull it out, dismantle and repair and give us the feedback. It would be interesting to see if the shaft is exactly the same. I'm looking at 3D printers at present as it won't be long before we can print off a new shaft to repair these things. Kind regards, Scott

Scott, just wanted to say thank you for making this excellent series of videos on the w204. I have recently bought a 350 estate and have repaired/serviced several things with the help of your experience through your clear and detailed instructions. I’ve done the rear o/s tail lamp fix (inc the n/s as you did to be thorough), the command wheel fix, the power steering fluid flush and the engine oil change. I am going to do a coolant flush/refill and was wondering if you have thought about doing a video on that. I have done this on other cars before but was wondering if there is a specific fill/bleed procedure for this engine. Any pointers gratefully received.
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks JF. I'm glad the videos were helpful. I actually did my coolant about 6 months ago but didn't record it. It's straight forward on the V6 diesel as there's no drain plug on the engine block like other Mercedes engines. There's just one drain valve on the bottom of the radiator. Do the coolant change when the engine is cold. Remove the plastic cover under the radiator to access the valve. Once the coolant's drained close the valve and fill with coolant via the overflow reservoir. Start the motor and the level will drop as the motor warms. Top it up and take it for a short drive to get up to temperature. Carefully remove the reservoir cap and top up if needed. There's no fancy bleeding procedure required.

***** That's good they fixed it. There's a recall notice out in the USA and Canada. My understanding is they're not actually changing anything but just replacing the damaged parts with new versions of the exact parts. So I think it prudent to keep an eye on it. For what it's worth and the fact the repair is quick and simple I'd add the extra earth wire on each side for peace of mind. None of us want to do a "Ford Pinto"!

Thanks for the video. I was able to repair mine following your steps. Amazing how cheaply Mercedes made this.

Richard Lovell Thanks for your compliment ... I'm very humbled.I must say the first time I had a pint in an English pub I thought it was magnificent! It was like mothers milk.

Hello Scott! I watched both the videos about the knob and have two questions before I try it myself: 1. My scroller still 'rocks' while spinning. This is normal right? Or should it just scroll free if the shaft is broken? 2. I have the facelift of the w212, is there any difference to the dismantling of the knob?

1. That's normal. 2. The controller is the same.
